Best AI SEO Tools for Small Businesses in 2026

The short answer

Start free. Google Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools, Google Analytics 4 and Ahrefs Free show crawl health and AI referral visits. Add a WordPress plugin for schema if you use WordPress. Pay for a tracker like Otterly.AI, Semrush or Ahrefs Brand Radar only when a question remains that free reports cannot answer.

  • Four free tools cover crawl health, Google AI impressions, Bing citations and AI referral traffic. Set them up before paying anyone.
  • Paid AI trackers start near $29 a month and grow with each platform and prompt you add.
  • Tools measure and tidy. They do not write pages or earn mentions, and none can promise a result.
  • Prices and features change fast. Everything here was checked on 20 October 2026, so confirm before you buy.
  • Disclosure: Chalk Labs offers free tools and paid services, so we have a stake in this topic.

What are the best AI SEO tools for a small business?

The best stack for most small businesses is free first, paid later. Use Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools for AI reports, GA4 for AI referral traffic, and Ahrefs Free for a site audit. Add one paid AI tracker only if you still have a question those cannot answer.

An AI SEO tool is software that helps you measure or improve how often AI assistants mention or link to your business. Some check your site for faults. Some track answers from ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. Some write schema code. None replace good pages that answer real customer questions.

Disclosure: Chalk Labs sells AI SEO services and also publishes free tools, which we list at the end. We have placed our own offers last and used the same criteria for them as for every other tool.

Which one fits you?

Four questions to size your stack. The answer is a starting point, not advice. Revisit it every quarter.

Best when
  • You are starting out or have a tight budget.

  • You have data but no plan.
  • The budget covers people, not just software.

A short quiz

Question 1 of 4What can you spend each month on AI SEO?
Question 2 of 4Where do your buyers ask for providers?
Question 3 of 4Who can fix pages and write answers?
Question 4 of 4What do you need most?

How should a small business choose an AI SEO tool?

Pick by the question you need answered, not by the feature list. Five checks keep the choice honest.

  • Which question does it answer? Name it before you buy, for example: are we named when buyers ask for a plumber in Leeds?
  • Does it cover the assistants your buyers use? Coverage differs by product, and some leave out Perplexity or Claude.
  • Is the data a sample? Even Bing says its query data is a sample of citation activity 2.
  • Who will act on it? A report no one reads has no value. Match the tool to your staff time.
  • What does it cost per month at your size? Count extra platforms and prompts, not just the entry price.

Which free tools should you set up first?

Set up four free tools in an afternoon. Google's guide says to use the generative AI performance report in Search Console to measure visibility in its AI features 1. Google also says there is no special markup or file you must add to appear there 1, so a free report beats a paid fix.

Bing Webmaster Tools has an AI Performance report, launched in public preview on 10 February 2026. It shows how often your pages are cited in Copilot and Bing's AI summaries, plus a sample of the phrases the AI used to find them 2. GA4 has an AI Assistant channel for visits from tools like ChatGPT, Gemini and Copilot. It leaves out Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, which sit under Organic Search 3.

Ahrefs Free, the renamed Ahrefs Webmaster Tools, gives verified sites a site audit that checks 170 or more issues, with 5,000 crawl credits a month per project. Its web analytics also graph traffic from AI assistants 4. Together these four answer most early questions at no cost.

Do WordPress plugins help with AI search?

They help with housekeeping, not with rankings. Yoast says its llms.txt feature is built in and free for everyone, and it can pick key pages automatically or let you choose them by hand 5. The feature page offers no independent proof that AI tools use the file. Google says Google Search ignores llms.txt files, though it is fine to keep one for other services 1.

For schema, Yoast outputs an Article with an author by default. Recipes need a partner plugin, and products need Yoast's WooCommerce SEO add-on 6. Rank Math lists many schema types in its free version, including Article, FAQ, HowTo, Person, Product and Local SEO, while its custom schema builder needs the Pro plan 7. Google's rule still applies: mark up only what visitors can see on the page 8.

One update matters here. Google's documentation says FAQ rich results no longer appear in Search from 7 May 2026 9. FAQ markup can still describe a page to other systems, but do not add it expecting a special display.

What can tools not do for a small business?

No tool writes your pages, earns reviews or fixes a slow site. A tracker shows you the gap, and you still have to publish answers that are clear and true. Google warns site owners to be wary of third-party tools that promise ranking success or claim to use internal Google metrics 1.

Tools also cannot tell you whether an AI answer about you is correct. Read the answers yourself. If they are wrong, our guide to fixing wrong AI answers about your brand shows the steps.

How do you test a tool before you commit?

Run a two-week trial with a fixed question list, and decide on evidence. Write down your goal first, so you cannot move the goalposts.

A 14-day test plan (copy and adapt)
  • Day 1: write 10 buyer prompts, e.g. 'best accountant for a small bakery in Leeds'.
  • Day 1: record by hand which businesses ChatGPT and Gemini name for each.
  • Day 2: load the same 10 prompts into the tool. Compare its results with yours.
  • Day 7 and 14: re-run and note what changed. Ask: did the tool show anything I missed?
  • Day 14: keep the tool only if it surfaced a gap you will fix this month.

Which free tools does Chalk Labs offer?

We publish free tools in this library, and you can use them without a paid plan. The AI Readiness Score is a 20-question check of how ready your site is. The AI Crawler Checker shows whether AI bots can read your site. The schema generator and llms.txt generator build code you can paste in.

We also sell services. Strategic Consulting costs $1,000 one-time, Strategic Execution costs $3,000 a month and Deep Execution costs $4,000 a month. Rahil Jain runs our AI SEO programme. Use the free tools above first, and ask us only if a gap remains that you cannot close yourself. We do not guarantee rankings, citations or lead counts.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best free AI SEO tool?

There is no single best one. Search Console covers Google's AI features 1, Bing Webmaster Tools covers Copilot citations 2, and GA4 covers visits from AI assistants 3. Together they answer most early questions without a paid plan.

Do I need a paid AI visibility tracker?

Only if free reports leave a question open and someone will act on the answer. Entry plans start near $29 a month for 15 prompts 10. A hand-made prompt list in a spreadsheet works for a first month.

Do I need llms.txt or special schema for AI search?

Not for Google. Its guide says no new files, markup or special schema are required, and that Google Search ignores llms.txt 1. They are cheap extras for other systems. Pages that answer real questions matter more.

Are these prices current?

They were checked on 20 October 2026 from each vendor's page 101112. Vendors change plans often and some pages show two price lists for monthly and annual billing. Confirm on the vendor's page before you pay.
