AI Visibility Tracking Tools Compared: Categories and How to Choose

The short answer

AI visibility tools fall into three groups: free first-party reports such as Search Console, add-ons to SEO suites such as Ahrefs and Semrush, and dedicated trackers such as Otterly and Profound. Pick by prompt count, engines covered and price, not brand. Profound's two-week test found once-a-day tracking gave visibility within about 2 points of ten-times-a-day, though ten runs smoothed citation share more, so pay for good prompts first 7.

  • Three categories: first-party reports (free), suite add-ons (about $50 to $300 a month) and dedicated trackers (about $29 to $489 a month, or custom).
  • Check three things: which engines are covered, how many prompts you can track, and whether history and exports are included.
  • Profound's two-week study found once-a-day tracking lands within about 2 points of ten-times-a-day for visibility, though ten runs smoothed citation share more. Prompt choice matters too.

What are the best AI visibility tracking tools?

There is no single best tool, because the right choice depends on how many prompts you need and which engines your buyers use. The tools fall into three groups. Free first-party reports show what Google and Microsoft will tell you. SEO suite add-ons bolt AI tracking onto tools you may already pay for. Dedicated trackers do nothing else.

We name tools below as examples of each group, with prices and features read from their own pages on 20 October 2026. We have not run a hands-on test of any of them, so this page does not rank them or judge accuracy. Vendors change plans often, so confirm each detail before you buy.

Disclosure: Chalk Labs offers AI-visibility audits as part of its services, so we have a stake in how readers choose.

What does an AI visibility tool actually measure?

Most tools run a list of prompts on AI engines, then record whether your brand is named and whether your pages are cited. Ahrefs defines two things: a brand mention is your name appearing in the answer text, and a citation is the answer linking to your pages as a source 3. Keep the two apart in any report.

Because the tools sample answers, they give estimates, not exact counts. Answers vary between runs, and personalisation can change which sources appear for the same prompt 8. Treat a tracker as a thermometer for trends, not a ledger.

How do the three tool groups compare?

The table compares the groups on the questions that decide most purchases. Named examples are illustrations, not endorsements.

What can you track for free?

More than most owners expect. Google's help page says a click on an external link in an AI Overview or AI Mode counts as a click in Search Console, and standard impression rules apply 1. An AI Overview occupies one position, and every link inside it gets that position 1. Each AI Mode follow-up counts as a new query 1.

Google's help page places AI features inside the normal Web search reports. Check your own Search Console account for any AI-specific report; the help page we read describes AI features only inside the standard Performance report.

Microsoft Clarity adds a Citation dashboard. Its documentation lists page citations, share of authority, query topics, queries and cited pages, and says it tracks citation activity in AI answers only, not rankings or click-through rates 2. You verify the domain with the Clarity code, Search Console or Bing Webmaster Tools 2.

What do SEO suite add-ons offer?

They suit teams that already use the suite. Ahrefs lists a Brand Radar AI add-on from $199 a month, with research across 492 million or more prompts from its database plus tracking of your own prompts 3. It also sells custom prompt packages: Basic at $50 a month with 2,500 checks, Growth at $100 with 7,000, and Scale at $250 with 25,000 3.

A check is one prompt on one platform in one location 3. So 2,500 checks cover about 80 prompts daily on one platform, per Ahrefs' own example 3. Do the sum before you buy: prompts times platforms times days.

Semrush lists SEO plus AI search plans at $199 a month (Starter, 50 AI prompts tracked daily) and $299 (Pro+, 100 prompts) on monthly billing, with annual billing up to 17% lower 4. It lists Google Search, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini on those plans 4.

What do dedicated AI visibility trackers offer?

They focus on prompts and engines. Otterly.AI lists Lite at $29 a month for 15 prompts, Standard at $189 for 100 and Premium at $489 for 400 5. The page shows a second, lower price set that is likely annual billing, but it does not label which is which 5. All plans cover ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot, while Gemini, Google AI Mode and Claude are paid add-ons 5.

Profound shows no public price for paid plans. It lists a free trial with 50 prompts for 7 days across three engines, and a custom enterprise plan covering up to nine engines, with API access, exports and SOC 2 compliance 6. Profound also lists an Agency Growth plan without a public price. You need a sales call to see a price.

Notice what this means for comparison. Otterly's cheapest plan includes Google AI Mode only as an add-on, while the suite plans above list Google Search, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini 45. Engine coverage differs more than headline price.

How do you choose, step by step?

Start with your prompts, not the tool. Write 10 to 30 questions your buyers really ask. Count the engines you care about. Multiply to see how many checks you need.

Then score each shortlisted tool on the same criteria. Use the checklist below, and ask each vendor to run a trial on your own prompts before you commit.

Evaluation checklist (copy and score each tool 0 to 2)
  • 1. Engines: does it cover the engines my buyers use (ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, AI Mode, AI Overviews)?
  • 2. Prompts: can I add my own prompts, and how many are included?
  • 3. Location and language: can I set the country and language I sell in?
  • 4. Mentions vs citations: are they reported separately?
  • 5. History and export: is data kept over time, and can I export CSV?
  • 6. Competitors: can I track named competitors on the same prompts?
  • 7. Price at my scale: prompts x engines x days, including add-ons.
  • 8. Billing: monthly or annual, and what is the cancellation rule?
  • 9. Trial: can I test it on my own prompts before paying?

How often do you need to run prompts?

Less often than vendors may suggest. Profound ran 753 prompts across seven platforms from 1 to 14 June 2026, once a day in one instance and ten times a day in another. Visibility was 78.7% at once a day and 80.4% at ten times a day, a difference of about 2 points 7. Citation share moved 10.24% against 9.99% 7.

Profound found that ten runs a day cut day-to-day movement in citation share by about 40%, and concluded that once a day is enough for visibility, with the mix of prompts mattering more than run frequency 7. It is a vendor study, run for 14 days, so it is one data point.

The practical lesson is to spend your budget on a well-chosen prompt list. Our AI prompt list builder helps you draft one, and manual versus automated prompt tracking covers when a spreadsheet is enough.

What can no tool tell you?

No tool tells you why an engine chose a source, and none can promise your numbers will move. Trackers sample answers that vary by run and by user. They also cannot show a buyer who read an AI answer, then typed your name into Google days later.

Pair any tool with simple checks: ask new customers how they found you, and review referral sources in your analytics. For the full picture of how Google's own reports differ, see Google Search Console versus AI visibility tools.

Frequently asked questions

Can I track AI visibility for free?

Partly. Search Console counts clicks and impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode inside its normal reports 1, and Microsoft Clarity has a Citation dashboard for AI answers 2. You can add a spreadsheet of prompts you check by hand.

How much do AI visibility tools cost?

Public list prices on 20 October 2026 ranged from $29 a month for Otterly's Lite plan 5 to $199 and $299 a month for Semrush plans with AI tracking 4. Profound's paid plans have no public price 6. Prices change.

How many prompts should I track?

Start with 10 to 30 questions your buyers really ask. Profound's study found once-a-day runs were enough for visibility, so spend effort on choosing prompts 7. Add more only when you act on what the first set shows.

Do I need to run prompts several times a day?

Probably not for visibility. In Profound's 14-day, US-only study, once-a-day tracking gave a visibility reading within about 2 percentage points of ten-times-a-day tracking, though ten runs smoothed citation share more 7. It is one vendor study, so test on your own set.

Are tracker results exact?

No. Trackers sample answers, and answers vary by run and by user. Ahrefs notes personalisation can change citations for the same prompt 8. Use the numbers for trends and compare like with like over time.
