How to Compare AI SEO Consultants in 2026 (There Is No Honest Ranking)

The short answer

The best AI SEO consultant is the one whose scope, proof and price fit your situation, and no neutral list can name that person for you. Compare consultants on five points: what they will deliver, evidence you can check, how they measure, what they charge and how you can leave. Distrust anyone who promises a ranking or a citation.

  • Nobody can honestly name the single best consultant. Compare on scope, checkable proof, measurement, price and exit terms.
  • Google says no one can guarantee a number one ranking. Treat promised AI citations the same way.
  • Published survey prices for SEO are broad. Freelancers average lower than consultancies and agencies, but samples are small.
  • Ask for work you can open and verify yourself, and ask every candidate the same ten questions.

Who are the best AI SEO consultants in 2026?

No trustworthy list can answer that, because the field is new, results are hard to verify and fit matters more than fame. Any page that crowns a winner without showing how it tested is selling something. So this page gives you a method instead of a ranking.

By AI SEO we mean making your business easy for tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI features to find, understand and cite. An AI SEO consultant is a person or small firm that advises on or carries out that work.

Disclosure: Rahil Jain, who signs this page, and his company Chalk Labs sell AI SEO services. We have a commercial interest. We describe Chalk Labs as one option near the end, after the neutral criteria, and we do not rank ourselves against anyone.

Score each candidate on the same six criteria, from 0 to 2. A total near 12 is strong. Under 8 means keep looking. These thresholds are our rule of thumb, not an industry standard. The table shows what good and bad look like and how to test each one in a single call.

What do SEO consultants charge?

Published figures cover SEO in general, not AI SEO, and they vary by survey. Ahrefs polled 439 providers (article updated August 2024). The average retainer was $2,917 a month: $1,348.63 for freelancers, $3,209 for agencies and $3,250 for consultancies. Hourly averages were $71.59 for freelancers, $98.90 for agencies and $171.18 for consultancies 2. Ahrefs assumed each provider charged the top of its price band, so these averages are rough and probably high.

Backlinko's guide to over 300 SEO professionals (updated December 2025) gives retainer bands from under $500 to over $5,000 a month, with $1,001 to $2,500 listed as mid-tier 4. SE Ranking surveyed 260 agencies in December 2024 and found 64% charge under $1,000 a month. Its authors say the sample may be too small to be statistically significant, and it skews to small agencies 3.

The only AI-specific figure we found is SE Ranking's: agencies with set pricing for AI Overviews work averaged about $937 a month 3. Use these numbers to spot a quote that is far outside the range, not to set a budget. Our page on what AI SEO costs goes deeper.

Which red flags should end the conversation?

Walk away from any promise of a fixed result. Google states that no one can guarantee a number one ranking, and warns about firms that email you out of the blue, will not explain their plans, or claim a special relationship with Google 1. A promised AI citation is the same kind of claim, because AI engines are third parties.

Be wary of magic files and tricks. Google says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and that you do not need new machine-readable files, AI-specific text files or special markup 6. A consultant can still add them for other reasons, but they should not sell them as the cause of results.

Check content volume, too. Google's spam policy names using generative AI to produce many pages without adding value for users as scaled content abuse 5. If a quote promises hundreds of pages, ask how each page will carry real expertise and who reviews it.

Finally, test the reviews. The US Federal Trade Commission has a final rule banning fake or false reviews and testimonials, including AI-generated ones 7. A wall of five-star quotes with no names is not proof.

What ten questions should you ask every candidate?

Ask all candidates the same questions, in writing if possible, so answers can be compared. Google's own advice is to ask what results to expect and over what timeframe, how success is measured, and for examples of past work 1. The list below extends that.

Copy-ready questions for AI SEO consultants
  • 1. Which pages or fixes will you deliver each month, in numbers?
  • 2. Show me two live sites you worked on. What exactly was your part?
  • 3. How will you choose the questions my buyers ask AI tools?
  • 4. How will we measure progress in month one, three and six?
  • 5. What do you need access to, and can it be read-only?
  • 6. What could stop this from working, and what is outside your control?
  • 7. Who writes and who fact-checks the pages? How are sources shown?
  • 8. Who owns the content, accounts and data if we stop?
  • 9. Can we stop at the end of any month?
  • 10. Which of my competitors or pages would you not touch, and why?

How can you check a consultant's proof yourself?

Open the work and test it in five minutes. Visit the site. Search Google for a question the page should answer. Then ask ChatGPT or Perplexity the same question and note whether the site appears. Answers vary between runs, so ask three times and record the dates.

Ask what the consultant did and what they did not do. A site can rank because of its brand, its age or its backlinks, not because of the consultant. Ask for before and after data from Search Console, which you could confirm with the site owner.

Be honest about time. Google says changes can take a few hours to several months to show up, and suggests waiting a few weeks before judging a change 8. A consultant who shows a win after a few days is selling a story.

Do you need advice, execution or training?

Decide what you are buying before you compare people. Advice means an audit, a plan and a monthly call, with your team doing the work. Execution means the consultant researches, writes, publishes and fixes. Training means they teach your team to do it.

Many consultants offer a mix. Our comparisons of freelancer vs agency and in-house vs agency cover who suits which setup. The step-by-step guide to hiring an AI SEO expert turns this page into a hiring process.

Where does Rahil Jain fit as one option? (commercial disclosure)

Rahil Jain is co-founder of Chalk Labs, a Web3 and AI growth agency. He is a former Goldman Sachs engineer and published researcher, and he runs Chalk Labs' AI SEO programme: query research, answer pages, technical readiness and AI-visibility measurement. You can read more on his expert page.

Chalk Labs' own published results are two cases it reports itself. Meru Trophy, a trophy shop in Bengaluru, went from near-zero search visibility to 27,300 Google clicks and 2.3 million impressions in 16 months. shilikajain.com, a new personal site, ranked first for one niche phrase within a month of launch. These are Chalk Labs' own Search Console figures, so open both sites and check them as you would any consultant's claims. They are small and search-led, and they do not prove results for your field.

Pricing is in USD: $1,000 one-time for Strategic Consulting, where your team executes, and $3,000 or $4,000 a month for Strategic Execution or Deep Execution, where we execute 100 or 200 answer pages. The monthly plans run as a three-month programme and you can stop at the end of any month. We do not guarantee rankings, citations or lead counts. Frequently asked questions

Is there an official certification for AI SEO consultants?

Not one we could find from Google or the AI companies. Google's own advice is to ask about past work, expected results and how success is measured 1. Judge by evidence you can verify, not by a badge or a course certificate.

How much should I pay for an AI SEO consultant?

Published SEO surveys show wide ranges. Ahrefs found average retainers of $1,348.63 for freelancers and about $3,200 for agencies and consultancies 2. AI-specific data is thin. Compare quotes on deliverables per dollar, not on the headline fee.

Can a consultant guarantee I appear in ChatGPT?

No. Google states that no one can guarantee a number one ranking 1, and AI tools are run by third parties who change how they work. Treat any promise of a citation as a reason to walk away.

Should I hire a freelancer or an agency?

It depends on scope and risk. Freelancers often cost less per month in survey data 2 but depend on one person. Agencies add depth and process. Read our freelancer vs agency comparison and use the scorecard above on both.

How long before a consultant shows results?

Google says changes can take a few hours to several months to show up and suggests waiting a few weeks before judging 8. Ask for early signals such as pages published and crawl access fixed, not instant rankings.
