Best llms.txt Generators in 2026 (and Whether You Need One)
Use the generator built into your platform: Yoast or Rank Math on WordPress, Mintlify for docs sites. Otherwise use a free online generator or write the file by hand. Be realistic: Google says it ignores llms.txt, and a large study found no link between having one and AI citations. Treat it as a cheap extra.

What is the best llms.txt generator?
The best one is the one your platform already includes, because it keeps the file updated for you. Yoast and Rank Math do this on WordPress, and Mintlify does it for documentation sites. For any other site, a free online generator or a hand-written file is enough. The file is short.
An llms.txt file is a plain Markdown file at the root of your site. It gives AI tools a short summary of the site and a list of useful pages. Jeremy Howard proposed it in September 2024. Only an H1 with the site name is required. Everything else is optional 1.

Does llms.txt actually help you get cited by AI?
There is no good evidence that it does. Google's guide says Google Search ignores llms.txt files, so they neither help nor harm your visibility there. It adds that it is fine to keep one for other services that use them 2.
Studies agree. SE Ranking analysed about 300,000 domains and found that 10.13% had an llms.txt file, with no correlation between having one and how often a domain was cited by AI. It did not say which AI tools it sampled, so treat it as a signal and not a final verdict 3. Ahrefs found that 97% of the roughly 38,000 domains in its sample with a valid file received zero requests for it in May 2026, counting humans and bots 4. Ahrefs notes its sample leans toward tech-savvy owners 4.
So why bother? The file costs little, and writing it forces you to state what your site is and which pages matter. Do it only if it takes under an hour, and do not expect a visibility jump. Pages that answer real questions and can be crawled matter far more. Our AI Crawler Checker tests that part.
How should you choose a generator?
Choose by how the file will be kept current, not by how it looks on day one. Five points decide most cases.
- Updates: does the file refresh itself when you add or remove pages?
- Control: can you pick pages and edit every description?
- Cost: is it free, and what is locked behind a paid plan?
- Output: does it follow the format, with an H1 first and link lists under H2 headings?
- Honesty: does the vendor claim a visibility boost it cannot show?

Which generator fits which site?
On WordPress, start with the SEO plugin you already run. Yoast lists llms.txt as a free built-in feature, and it can pick key content automatically or let you choose by hand 5. Rank Math offers an LLMS Txt module you switch on in its dashboard, with limits on posts and terms 6. Install nothing new for this one file.
On a documentation site, Mintlify hosts an llms.txt for every project and keeps it current. It excludes hidden pages and pages marked noindex unless you change a setting 7. llmstxt.org also lists GitBook, AIOSEO, Wix and plugins for VitePress and Docusaurus 1. For a custom or small site, use a free online tool or write it by hand.
What does a good llms.txt file look like?
A good file is short, plain and specific. It names the site, says what it does in one sentence, and lists a handful of pages with one-line notes. The format puts the H1 first, then an optional quote, then H2 sections of links. A section named Optional holds links an AI tool may skip 1.

What mistakes do generators make?
Generators fail in predictable ways, and you can catch each one in five minutes. AI-written summaries can contain errors, so read them. Firecrawl, for example, uses a language model to format the crawl, which means a person should check every line 8.
Other faults are too many links, links to pages that no longer exist, and pages you meant to hide. Rank Math defaults to 100 posts or terms, which is long for a guide meant to be brief 6. Mintlify skips noindex pages by default 7, but a generic crawler may not. Review the list against your sitemap and remove anything outdated.
Keep it fresh. When a price page moves, update the file the same day.
How do you check that your file works?
Open yourdomain.com/llms.txt in a browser. You should see plain text, not an error page and not your home page. Then click every link once.

What does the Chalk Labs generator do, and what does it not do?
Our llms.txt generator builds the file in your browser as you type, so nothing is saved. If you press the sitemap button, it sends your web address to our server once to read your public sitemap and suggest pages. It checks the shape of each link and warns about missing descriptions.
