AEO vs GEO: What Is the Difference?
AEO (answer engine optimization) and GEO (generative engine optimization) have no agreed definitions, and Google says the work is still SEO (search engine optimization) 1. A useful split, used in Microsoft's guide, is that AEO is about clarity for AI agents and assistants, and GEO is about credibility so content is seen as trustworthy 4. Run one plan: be crawlable, clear, then credible.
- No standard defines AEO or GEO. Google says the work is still SEO. Forrester says AEO differs from SEO significantly but not fundamentally.
- Microsoft's guide splits them by purpose: AEO for clarity, so assistants can use your answers, and GEO for credibility, so engines trust your content.
- Work in this order: access (can bots fetch your pages), clarity (can a machine lift your answer), credibility (would a model trust you).
- The original GEO benchmark (KDD 2024) ran mainly on a simulated engine, so treat every tactic as a test, not a promise.
What is the difference between AEO and GEO?
There is no single agreed difference, because the two terms have no shared definition. Wikipedia's article on the topic says there is no consensus definition and that usage varies by company 8.
Here is the most useful reading. AEO, short for answer engine optimization, means making your content easy for a machine to read, lift and show as the answer. GEO, short for generative engine optimization, means earning a mention or citation inside an answer that an AI tool writes for itself. Microsoft's advertising guide draws the line in a similar place: AEO for clarity and GEO for credibility 4.
Google takes a different view. Its guide names both terms, then says optimizing for generative AI search is optimizing for the search experience, so it is still SEO 1. Forrester sits in the middle: it says answer engine work differs from SEO significantly, but not fundamentally 7.
So treat AEO and GEO as two angles on one job: build pages that machines can fetch, understand and trust, then check whether AI answers now include you. Our longer guides cover each term: what is answer engine optimization and what is generative engine optimization.
How do Google, Microsoft and the research define AEO and GEO?
Each source defines the terms differently, and none is a standard. The GEO paper is a research method. Microsoft's guide uses a retail product example, so it reads as advertiser-facing guidance. Google's guide is a positioning statement, and Bing's guidelines add a narrow definition of GEO.
| Source | What it says about AEO | What it says about GEO |
|---|---|---|
| Google Search Central guide, updated July 2026 1 | Named as a term you may see used for this kind of work. | Named the same way. Google's position is in the short answer above. |
| Microsoft Advertising guide, January 2026, as reported by Search Engine Roundtable 4 | Optimize content so AI agents and assistants can find, understand and present answers. The focus is clarity, using enriched, real-time data. | Optimize for generative AI search so content is discoverable, trustworthy and authoritative. The focus is credibility, using an authoritative voice, with sample wording such as a star rating and a named magazine endorsement. |
| Bing Webmaster Guidelines, February 2026, as reported by Search Engine Journal 6 | Not covered in the report. | Names GEO and focuses it on content eligibility for grounding and reference in AI responses (as paraphrased by Search Engine Journal). Citations are not promised. |
| GEO research paper, KDD 2024 2 | Not used. | Introduces GEO as a framework for improving a source's visibility in generative engine responses. |
How do AEO and GEO compare side by side?
In common usage, AEO is about being the answer and GEO is about being a source an AI answer draws on. These are conventions, not rules.
For a three-way table that adds classic SEO, see SEO vs AEO vs GEO.
| Question | AEO | GEO |
|---|---|---|
| Where does the term come from? | No single origin we could verify. Our reading is that featured snippets, a box near the top of results with a short excerpt 12, are an older cousin. | A 2023 research paper by Aggarwal and colleagues, accepted to the KDD 2024 research conference 2. |
| What is the typical work? | Answer-first paragraphs, question headings, lists, tables and clear product facts 5. | Original facts, cited statistics, expert quotes, reviews and mentions on other sites 13. |
| What do AI tools do with your page? | Split it into small pieces and can lift question-and-answer pairs word for word 5. | Combine ideas from several sources into one new answer, so you compete for a mention, not a rank 2. |
| How strong is the public evidence? | Mostly platform and vendor guidance. | The original peer-reviewed benchmark used a simulated engine, with a small Perplexity check 3, plus platform guidance. |
Where do AEO and GEO overlap?
They overlap on the foundation: a page that cannot be fetched, indexed (added to a search engine's database) and quoted cannot win under either label. Google's guide lists indexing and snippet eligibility (a snippet is a short text excerpt) as the technical requirement for its AI features 1.
A Microsoft Bing product manager makes a similar point. The post says that whether you call it GEO, AIO or SEO, visibility is everything, and that crawlability, metadata, internal linking and backlinks remain essential 5.
What changes is the selection step. Microsoft says ranking still happens, but it is less about ordering whole pages and more about which pieces of content earn a place in the final answer 5. That is why AEO and GEO advice sounds alike: both tell you to write self-contained pieces and back them with proof.
Both labels also attract the same myths. For Google Search, the guide says llms.txt files, special markup, chopping content into tiny chunks and rewriting text just for AI are not needed, and that llms.txt files neither harm nor help visibility there 1. If a seller presents these as the gap between AEO and GEO, ask for evidence.
What should you do differently for AEO and for GEO?
Sort the work into three layers and do them in order: access, clarity, then credibility. Access is shared SEO groundwork. Clarity is the part usually called AEO. Credibility is the part usually called GEO. This three-layer split is our own working model, not an industry standard.
- Access (both). Pages must be indexed, crawlable and quick to load. For Google's AI features, indexing and snippet eligibility is the technical test 1. Other assistants use their own search bots, which you allow or block in robots.txt (the plain text file that tells crawlers, the programs that fetch pages, which ones to visit). Examples are OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT search 14, PerplexityBot 15 and Claude-SearchBot 16.
- Clarity (AEO-style). Open each section with the answer, use question headings, and put steps and comparisons in lists and tables. Microsoft's Bing team says assistants break pages into small pieces and can lift question-and-answer pairs word for word 5. See our guide to answer-first introductions.
- Credibility (GEO-style). Add facts a reader cannot get from any other page: your own data, named sources, expert quotes. Google's closest idea is non-commodity content: unique expert or experienced takes that go beyond common knowledge. It says this will likely influence your presence in generative AI search in the long run more than its other suggestions 1. In the GEO paper, statistics, quotations and citations raised visibility in the test engine, while keyword stuffing did not 3. Its headline gain of up to 40% is a best case from a simulated engine, not a forecast 2.
What does one page look like under each label?
The same paragraph can be written three ways. The example uses an invented plumber and bracketed placeholders, so it shows the pattern only. Replace every bracket with your own checked facts.
Version 2 is easier for a machine to lift. Version 3 gives a model a reason to pick you over the next plumber, because it adds proof a reader can check. It only works if the facts are true and you can show where each one comes from.
- Version 1, keyword-first: Looking for a plumber in Leeds? Our Leeds plumbers offer the best plumbing services in Leeds at great prices.
- Version 2, AEO-style (clarity): A boiler repair in Leeds usually takes [1 to 3] hours. We fix most faults in one visit. The call-out fee is [price] and we quote the repair price before work starts. We cover [list of postcodes].
- Version 3, GEO-style (credibility): Everything in version 2, plus: In [year] we completed [number] boiler repairs in Leeds, and [percent] were fixed on the first visit (source: our job records, [month year]). Our engineers hold [licence name], numbers [list] checkable on the public register. A customer review: '[short real quote]', [first name, date].
When should you lean towards AEO, and when towards GEO?
Lean towards AEO-style work when buyers ask a factual question and want one clear answer. Lean towards GEO-style work when buyers ask an AI to choose between providers. These are decision rules drawn from how the tools work, not measured results. Either way, do the access layer first, because Google notes that indexing and serving are not guaranteed 1.
Try this triage. List your ten most valuable buyer questions. Mark each as a fact question, where one right answer exists, or a choice question, where the buyer wants a recommendation. Fact questions get answer-first pages. Choice questions get proof-heavy pages plus mentions on other sites.
How much time or money does each one take?
Neither label has a published price or time benchmark that we could verify, so this answer is our judgement, not data. AEO-style work is mostly editing pages you already own, so it costs writing time and little else. GEO-style work takes longer, because original facts, reviews and accurate mentions on other sites have to be earned over time.
Plan on weeks for the edits and months before you can judge the effect. Do not shortcut the credibility work: Google says chasing inauthentic mentions is not as helpful as it might seem 1.
Why are there so many names: AEO, GEO, LLMO, AIO and AI SEO?
The names multiply because there is no consensus definition, so companies each use their own terms 8. Wikipedia lists AEO, LLMO (large language model optimization), AIO (artificial intelligence optimization) and AI SEO as other names for the same area, and notes that HubSpot, Semrush, Adobe and Microsoft Advertising each use different terms 8. Even the letters collide: Conductor uses AIO to mean Google's AI Overviews, the AI summaries on some results pages 13.
Forrester's analyst argues that vendors overstate the contrast with SEO to win budget 7. Treat that as one expert's view, and ask any seller what, exactly, they do under each label.
Our own case records show the problem in practice. Chalk Labs lists its local trophy-shop work for Meru Trophy in Bengaluru under one label, 'SEO · AEO · GEO', and measured the result in Google clicks and impressions over 16 months. Those numbers cannot be split into AEO effects and GEO effects, and we do not claim they can. See the case studies.
| Name | What it usually means | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| AEO | Making content easy to find, lift and show as the answer. | One trade report expands it as 'Answer/Agentic' when summarizing Microsoft's guide 4. |
| GEO | Getting cited or named inside AI-written answers. | Bing's guidelines use the term but do not promise citations 6. |
| LLMO | Optimizing for large language models. | Listed as another name for the same area 8. See GEO vs LLMO. |
| AIO | 'Artificial intelligence optimization' or Google's AI Overviews. | Check which meaning the writer intends 813. |
| AI SEO | Another name for the same area 8. | Wikipedia says Semrush markets its tools under this name 8. See what is AI SEO. |
How do you measure AEO and GEO progress?
Measure both with one fixed list of buyer prompts, checked on a schedule, plus the platform reports that exist. Google's guide points site owners to the Generative AI performance report in Search Console, which shows how people find content through generative AI features 1. Microsoft introduced an AI Performance report in Bing Webmaster Tools, as a public preview, in a post dated 10 February 2026 17.
For ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude we have not found a first-party report of the same kind. So teams log results from a fixed prompt list and mark each prompt as named, cited or absent. Our guides to building a prompt list and measuring AI share of voice walk through the steps.
Why measure citations at all? Pew Research Center's study of 900 US adults found that on Google, visits to results pages with an AI summary included a click on a traditional result 8% of the time, versus 15% without one 11. The data is observed browsing, so it shows an association, not a cause. If fewer clicks go to links, being named in the answer may matter more, though Pew did not look at sales.
How do you combine AEO and GEO in one plan?
Run one plan with one prompt list, and give both kinds of edit to the same pages. Splitting them into two projects duplicates work and hides what moved. In Rahil Jain's own AI SEO program at Chalk Labs, the work is one list: query research, answer pages, technical readiness and AI-visibility measurement.
The list below is a simple monthly rhythm. Change one thing at a time, so you can tell which edit mattered.
Expect slow and uneven results, and be careful with promises. Bing's own guidelines say GEO does not guarantee citations, just as SEO does not guarantee rankings 6, and we do not guarantee them either. As far as we could find, nobody has published a controlled test that separates AEO-style from GEO-style edits in live products. The original GEO paper used mainly a simulated engine plus a 200-query Perplexity.ai check 3.
- Week 1, access. Confirm your top ten pages are indexed and that the bots you care about can reach them. The AI Crawler Checker and our guide to allowing AI crawlers in robots.txt cover this.
- Weeks 2 and 3, clarity. Rewrite the first lines of those pages so each section opens with the answer. Test the intros with the Answer Block Checker.
- Weeks 4 to 8, credibility. Add one original fact, named source or expert quote to each page. Fix wrong or stale details on your profiles and review pages.
- Every month, measure. Re-run the same prompt list, log named, cited or absent, and write down what you changed since last time.
Frequently asked questions
Is AEO the same as GEO?
Not exactly, but they are close. AEO usually means making your content the clear answer. GEO usually means getting cited inside AI-written answers. No standard defines either term 8, and a Microsoft Bing product manager writes that whichever name you use, crawlability, metadata and links still matter 5. Pick one plan, not two.
Is GEO just SEO?
Mostly, but not entirely. Google says optimizing for generative AI search is still SEO 1, and Forrester says answer engine optimization differs from SEO significantly but not fundamentally 7. What is new is that a single piece of text competes inside a written answer, and engines beyond Google run their own crawlers and rules 14.
Should I do AEO or GEO first?
Neither first. Start with access: indexed, crawlable pages. Then do clarity (AEO-style), then credibility (GEO-style). If buyers ask AI to pick a provider, move credibility up your list. Google says a page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet to appear 1.
Who coined AEO and GEO?
Do I need llms.txt for AEO or GEO?
Not for Google Search. Its guide says llms.txt files will neither harm nor help your visibility or rankings there 1. We have not verified a requirement from other assistants. Treat the file as optional housekeeping, not a ranking lever. See what is llms.txt.
Are AEO and GEO tools worth paying for?
Possibly as a benchmark, not as proof. Digiday's May 2026 report quotes agency executives who say the same prompts give different answers across tools and that the tools work better as a benchmark than as a source of truth 10. Google warns that outside tools lack its internal ranking data 9. Start with a spreadsheet and a fixed prompt list, then pay only if you need scale.
