How to Fix Wrong Information AI Says About Your Brand

The short answer

You cannot edit an AI model directly, so you fix what it reads. Record the wrong claim, ask several engines with search on, open the cited links, and correct the page or profile behind the error. Then publish one clear fact page, report the answer through each engine's feedback control, and re-test every week.

  • You cannot edit a model, but you can fix the pages, profiles and listings that search-enabled answers draw on.
  • Diagnose first: a wrong answer with a cited source needs a different fix from one with no source at all.
  • Publish one plain fact page that states the right answer first, and keep your Organization markup and profiles consistent.
  • Use each engine's report button and, for personal data, privacy rights. Results are not instant and no one can promise them.
  • Re-run the same prompts three times each, weekly, and log them. Answers change from run to run.

Why does ChatGPT say wrong things about my company?

There are two main causes, and the fix differs. Either the engine read a wrong or outdated page, or it guessed. Both happen.

Guessing comes from how language models work. Training that rewards predicting the next word also rewards a confident guess when the model lacks facts, and incomplete or unrepresentative training data adds to the problem 7. A small company is a classic case: the model recognises the name but holds few facts, so it fills the gap with something plausible.

Reading a bad source is the second cause. Search-enabled assistants pull in web pages at answer time. A surprising page can end up as the source: an Ahrefs study of Google AI Overviews found many cited URLs outside the first 10 results blocks 11. Google itself warns that AI responses may include mistakes 2.

Do it step by step

0 of 9 done0%

  1. Copy the false statement word for word. Beside it, write the correct version and a public URL or document that proves it.

Tip: If you cannot prove the true version, fix that before you ask anyone to change anything.

  2. Run the same question in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Mode with search on. Save each answer and every cited link in your log. Answers vary, so one run is not enough.

  3. Find the wrong claim on each page, or note that it is missing. A claim with no cited source may be a model guess, or it may come from a page the engine did not show. Treat it as unknown until you have tested several runs.

  4. Mark each one as own site, third-party, news or forum, no source, or entity mix-up. Start with the errors on pages you own, then work outward.

  5. Update or remove outdated pages. Publish one fact page with the right answer first, a date and proof. Make sure it is indexed and that AI crawlers are not blocked 13.

  6. Edit or claim your listings. Send correction requests with evidence to editors. For Wikipedia, disclose your connection and use the talk page 6. For Google's panel, verify your identity and suggest edits 4.

Tip: Send one request per wrong fact. Bundled requests are easy to ignore.

  7. Add JSON-LD with name, url, logo and sameAs links, and make name, address and description match across your profiles 5.

  8. Use the thumbs-down or report option, name the wrong line, give the right fact and link the proof 2. Do this once per engine per error.

  9. Re-run your prompts three times each every week. Call the error fixed only when your rule is met, and keep the log as a record.

Tip: If an error returns, check whether a third-party page copied the old fact back.

What do you need before you start fixing a wrong answer?

You need a spreadsheet, access to your website and your business profiles, and the facts that prove the right answer. Diagnosis takes one to two hours. Fixes on your own site can go live the same day. These times are our own estimates, not measured data.

How long engines take to change their answers is not published. OpenAI says a robots.txt change for its search crawler can take about 24 hours to take effect 3, but that covers crawler access, not when a corrected fact appears. Plan on weeks of re-testing and give nobody a date.

  • The exact wrong claim, copied word for word, and the true version.
  • Proof of the truth: your own page, a registry entry, a press release, an invoice or a policy document.
  • Login access to your site, Google Business Profile and any directory listings.
  • A free account on each engine you want to test.

How do you work out where the wrong claim came from?

Ask the same question on at least three engines with search switched on, three times each. Save the full answer and every cited link. Then open each link and look for the wrong claim on the page.

Sort what you find with the table below. The pattern tells you which fix to start with. If the claim is on a page you own, that is the best case, because you control it.

Also ask a follow-up such as 'What source is that based on?'. Treat the reply as a clue, not proof. Engines can name a source that does not hold the claim, so always open the link yourself.

What should you fix on your own site first?

Start with a plain fact page. State the right answer in the first sentence, add the date, and put the proof next to it. We think repeating the false claim at the top risks an engine lifting it as the answer. We have no study showing this, so state the right fact first as a precaution. Name the wrong claim once, lower down, only if people search for it.

Next, make sure the page can be found. Google says a page needs to be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet to appear as a supporting link in its AI features 1. For ChatGPT, OpenAI recommends allowing OAI-SearchBot so a site can appear in its search results 3. Check this with the free AI Crawler Checker.

Then deal with outdated pages. Update, remove or add a noindex tag to old pages that repeat the wrong fact. Google's Removals tool hides a page within about a day, but requests expire after roughly six months, so make the permanent fix too 9. Do not rely on robots.txt to hide a page 9.

  • Last checked 20 October 2026. Proof: Companies House record, link below.
  • A third-party directory lists our Manchester branch. We closed it in 2023.

How do you correct third-party sources?

Go to the source of each wrong claim and ask for a fix with evidence. Be brief, polite and specific. Give the wrong line, the right line and a public URL that proves it.

Each platform has its own route. The table covers the ones that AI answers lean on most often. Check the platform's current rules before you act, since they change.

Where to correct a wrong fact
Where it is wrongRouteWatch out for
Google knowledge panelVerify your identity, then use 'Suggest edits' on the panel and add public URLs as evidence 4Descriptions cannot be edited directly; Google may remove one but will not write it 4
WikipediaDisclose your connection, then post an edit request on the article's talk page with independent sources 6Editors with a conflict of interest are strongly discouraged from editing directly; narrow exceptions exist for serious errors 6
Directories and review sitesClaim the listing and edit it, or use the site's support formFix every copy; one wrong listing can be recopied by others
News articles and blogsEmail the editor with the correct fact and proof; ask for a dated correction noteDo not demand deletion first; it rarely works
Your own social and business profilesEdit directly and keep name, address, description and links consistentOld bios on forgotten profiles are a common source

Can you report the error to the AI company?

Yes, though it is a slow lever, not a switch. Google AI Overviews carry thumbs-up and thumbs-down icons. A thumbs down lets you pick 'Report a problem' and add details, and your latest search and its results go with the report 2. Most other assistants have a similar control in the answer menu.

OpenAI does not publish a company-fact correction form that we could confirm. Use the thumbs-down control under the answer, and for personal data about an individual use OpenAI's privacy request route; check OpenAI's help centre for the current process. Keep your report short: the question, the wrong line, the right fact and a URL that proves it.

If the error is a false statement about a living person, privacy law may help. Under the GDPR, a person has the right to have inaccurate personal data about them corrected without undue delay 8. That applies to personal data about individuals, not to companies, and it depends on where you live. It is not legal advice, so ask a lawyer before you rely on it.

How do you help engines tell who you are?

Make your facts the same everywhere, and say so in code. Organization structured data is JSON-LD that gives Google details about your organisation. Google says it helps to disambiguate your organisation in search results, and no properties are required 5.

Useful properties include name, url, logo, address and sameAs, which lists other pages about you such as social or review profiles 5. The template below shows a minimal block. Match every value to the text visible on your site. For a fuller walk-through, see how to add Organization and Person schema.

Do not expect markup alone to fix a wrong answer. Google says no special structured data is needed to appear in its AI features 1. The value is in removing ambiguity, especially when another company has a similar name.

How do you know it is fixed, and what can you not control?

Call it fixed when the answer is right on every run of the same prompt, on at least two engines, two weeks in a row. That rule is our suggestion, not an industry standard. Use the log template to record each run. For wider tracking, see how to measure AI share of voice and how to build a prompt list.

Know the limits. Nothing forces an engine to change an answer, and a single fix can take weeks to show. A court case is rarely a shortcut. If a claim is serious, such as an allegation of a crime or a safety risk, speak to a lawyer in parallel.

Avoid shortcuts that backfire. Do not post fake reviews, edit Wikipedia as an undisclosed company employee, or flood forums. These can create new problems that engines may then repeat. For a wider view of your brand in AI answers, run the audit your brand in AI search routine each quarter.

Frequently asked questions

Can I make ChatGPT delete wrong information about my company?

Not directly. You can report the answer, fix the pages it relies on, and publish a clear fact page. We could not confirm an OpenAI correction form for company facts, so use the thumbs-down control under the answer and check OpenAI's help centre for the current process. Re-test weekly, since changes can take weeks and are not promised.

Why do different AI engines give different wrong answers?

Each engine uses its own model, search index and source selection, and none publishes how. One Ahrefs study of Google AI Overviews found that only 37.9% of cited URLs also appeared in the first 10 blocks of the results page 11, so even a single engine can cite unexpected pages. Fix the source most runs share first, then the outliers.

Should I create a page that debunks the false claim?

Make a fact page that states the right answer first and gives proof. Mention the false claim once, lower down, only if people search for it. We think a page built around the myth risks repeating the error. We have no study showing this, so lead with the right fact as a precaution.

Can I use GDPR to fix wrong AI answers?

If the wrong information is personal data about an individual, Article 16 gives a right to have inaccurate data corrected without undue delay 8. It does not cover companies as such, and how it applies to AI answers depends on the facts and your location. Ask a lawyer.

How long until the AI answer is correct?

No engine publishes a timeline. Crawl access changes for OpenAI's search bot can take about a day 3, but a corrected fact can take weeks to show in answers, if at all. Log the same prompts weekly and judge by three runs per prompt.
