AI 404 Redirect Builder

Sometimes an AI assistant links to a page on your site that does not exist. Paste those dead URLs and your real pages. Get suggested matches and ready-to-paste 301 redirect rules.

1. Add your URLs

One per line, paths or full URLs. Find them in your server logs or analytics: visits from AI sources that landed on your 404 page.
One per line. Export from your CMS or sitemap, or import below.

How it works

  • Paste the dead URLs that AI-referred visitors reached, and your list of real pages. You can import up to 40 pages from a sitemap.
  • The tool compares the words in each dead URL with the words in each real page and suggests up to three matches, with a High, Medium or Low fit. It only pre-selects a match when the fit is Medium or better.
  • Check each suggestion. Change it, or choose “No redirect”. The rules update as you go.
  • Copy the rules for your platform: Next.js, vercel.json, Nginx, Apache, Netlify or a CSV. The matching runs in your browser. Only the optional sitemap import contacts a server.

What it cannot tell you

  • It matches words, not meaning. A Medium fit can still be the wrong page, so read each match before you use it.
  • It does not find your dead URLs for you. Look in server logs, or in your analytics for visits from AI sources that landed on your 404 page.
  • Rules are generated for exact paths only. URLs with unusual characters are flagged for a hand-written rule.
  • Test the redirects after you deploy them. We cannot see your server setup.

Questions

Why would an AI assistant link to a page that does not exist?

Language models can produce a URL that looks right but was never published, for example by combining your domain with a likely page name. Ahrefs has published a study of how often AI assistants send visitors to 404 pages. Treat the reason as a risk to check on your own site, and use your logs to see whether it happens to you.

Should I redirect every dead URL to my home page?

No. Send each URL to the page that answers the same question, or leave it as a 404 if nothing fits. Redirecting unrelated URLs to the home page tends to confuse visitors and search engines.

Should these be 301 or 302 redirects?

Use 301 (permanent) when the dead URL should always lead to the new page. Use 302 only for a temporary move. This tool outputs 301s.

Could I just publish a page at the dead URL instead?

Yes, if the URL names something people really want and you can write a good page for it. Often that is the better answer: the AI has told you what it expects to find.

Is my list stored?

No. Matching happens in your browser. The optional sitemap import sends only the domain you type to our server, which fetches the public sitemap.
