AI SEO for B2B vs B2C: What Actually Differs
The technical base of AI SEO is the same for B2B and B2C: pages AI crawlers can read, clear answers and trusted mentions. The difference is the question. B2B buyers ask comparison and requirement questions and decide as a group over weeks, so you publish evidence and track leads. B2C buyers ask for recommendations and decide fast, so you track orders or visits.
- The foundation is identical: crawlable pages, direct answers and mentions on trusted sites. Google says no special markup is needed.
- B2B prompts lean to category, competitor and requirement questions. B2C prompts lean to products, recommendations and local choices.
- B2B buyers often form a shortlist before talking to sellers, so AI answers shape who gets a call.
- Measure B2B by qualified enquiries and self-reported source. Measure B2C by orders, calls or store visits.
What is the main difference between AI SEO for B2B and B2C?
The main difference is who is asking and what they need to decide. A B2B buyer is usually one of several people judging risk and fit for a company. A B2C buyer is usually one person choosing for themselves or their household, often in minutes.
Here, AI SEO means making your business easy for tools like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google's AI features to find, understand and cite. B2B means you sell to other businesses. B2C means you sell to consumers.
The craft is shared. In both cases the page must be indexed, the answer must come first, and other sites should mention you. What changes is the type of page you write first, how much proof it needs, and what you count as a win.
How do B2B and B2C buyers ask AI differently?
B2B buyers ask AI to compare and filter vendors, while B2C buyers more often ask it what to buy or where to go. G2 surveyed 1,076 B2B software decision-makers in March 2026 and classed their first AI prompts. 33% were category-based, 31% competitor-based, 22% requirements or process-based, 9% ecosystem-based and 6% budget-based 1.
6sense, a vendor of buyer-intent software, reports that the most common use of AI in B2B buying is comparing vendor offerings 2. That fits the G2 split: the buyer already knows the problem and wants a short list.
Consumer data is thinner and less specific. A December 2024 Bain-Dynata consumer survey (1,117 respondents) found that, among those who use AI chatbots, 68% use them for research and summaries and 42% for shopping recommendations 4. A Gartner survey of 1,004 US consumers in August 2026 found 34% were very or extremely willing to use AI tools for holiday gift ideas 5. The same release says retailer websites and ordinary web searches were still the most common sources of inspiration.
One caution: the G2 sample is software buyers, so it may not describe a freight broker or an accounting firm. Treat it as a strong hint, not a rule for every B2B sector.
Side by side: B2B vs B2C AI SEO
The table below sums up the practical differences. It mixes survey findings with our own judgement, so use it as a planning aid rather than a measured benchmark.
| Question | B2B | B2C |
|---|---|---|
| Typical prompt | "Best invoicing software for 20-person firms", "X vs Y", "does it integrate with Z" | "Best running shoes for flat feet", "cafe near me with vegan options" |
| Who decides | Often several people with different worries (typical, not measured here) | One person or one household |
| Time to decide | Weeks to months | Minutes to days |
| What AI is used for | Building and comparing a shortlist | Getting ideas, comparing products, finding nearby options |
| Pages to publish first | Comparison, pricing, integration and use-case pages | Product guides, buying guides, location and menu or range pages |
| Proof AI and buyers look for | Case studies, named reviews, security and compliance facts | Reviews, photos, ratings, price and stock clarity |
| What you measure | Qualified enquiries, demos, self-reported source | Orders, calls, direction requests, store visits |
| Main risk | Missing from the shortlist before sales ever hears of you | Losing clicks when the answer appears without a visit |
How do buying groups and long sales cycles change the work?
In B2B you are often chosen before you are contacted, so your pages must work without a salesperson. In 6sense's 2025 study, buyers picked their winner from their Day One shortlist 95% of the time. The first contact with a seller had moved from 69% to 61% of the way through the journey 2.
Gartner's survey of 645 B2B buyers found 45% had used generative AI in a recent purchase, mostly to gather information on vendors and products. Buyers used an average of seven information sources, and 69% preferred to check AI-generated insights with a sales rep 3. So AI starts the process, and humans still verify it.
G2 adds that 69% of surveyed software buyers said an AI chatbot led them to choose a different vendor than they first planned, and 33% bought from a vendor they had not heard of before 1. For a smaller B2B firm, that is the opening: you can be named without being famous.
Practically, write for several readers. The finance lead wants price and terms, the technical lead wants integration details, and the sponsor wants proof. Each should find an answer on its own page that an AI can quote.
What should each side publish first?
Publish the pages that match the first questions your buyers type. For B2B, start with an honest comparison page, a pricing explanation, and one page per use case. Ecommerce (B2C) and SaaS (B2B) follow these two patterns. Our guides on writing comparison pages that get cited and structuring a pricing page show how.
For B2C, start with buying guides and clean product or location pages. Product pages need clear names, prices, sizes and availability. Local sellers need accurate hours, address and service details; see optimising a local business for AI search and optimising product pages for AI shopping.
- B2B accounting software, 15 staff:
- best accounting software for small agencies
- [your product] vs [competitor] for multi-currency billing
- does [your product] connect to Stripe and a UK bank feed
- B2C bakery chain:
- best sourdough bakery near [district]
- where to order a vegan birthday cake for Saturday
- gluten free bakery open on Sunday
What counts as proof in each case?
B2B proof is specific and checkable: named customers with permission, security facts, integration lists and third-party reviews. B2C proof is volume and freshness: ratings, photos, recent reviews and complete business profiles.
For local consumer businesses there is some data on profile completeness. Yext analysed more than 490,000 shared query-market cases across four AI engines and found businesses with schema markup were 2.1 times as likely to be named as those without, while location pages showed a 2.9 times lift 7. Yext itself calls these associations, not proof of cause, so do not treat schema as a lever on its own.
B2C also has a click problem to plan around. Pew Research watched 900 US adults in March 2025. Users clicked a normal result link in 8% of visits when a Google AI summary appeared, against 15% when none did 6. If your sales depend on a visit, expect fewer of them per impression and aim to be named in the answer itself.
How do you measure success for each?
Measure the outcome your sales model rewards, not visits alone. B2B teams should track qualified enquiries, demo requests and the answer to a "how did you hear about us?" question, because AI answers often send no trackable click. Our guide to self-reported attribution shows the form wording.
B2C teams should track orders, phone calls, direction requests and branded searches, plus AI referrals where they appear. The guide to tracking AI traffic in GA4 covers the channel rules. For both, keep a fixed list of 30 to 50 buyer prompts and check them monthly; the AI Prompt List Builder turns your category into that list.
To estimate what a visit is worth with your own numbers, use the ROI calculator. B2B has fewer visits at a high value each, B2C many visits at a low value each, so the same page can look strong or weak depending on the sum.
What if you sell to both businesses and consumers?
Split by audience, not by company. Give each audience its own pages, tone and proof, and keep one consistent description of what you are across your site and profiles. A company that sells to shops and to shoppers needs a trade page and a consumer page that do not contradict each other.
Start with whichever audience brings most of your revenue and copy the working pattern to the other later. For a related view of buyer research habits, read ChatGPT vs Google for B2B research and the impact on B2B pipeline.
Frequently asked questions
Is AI SEO harder for B2B or B2C?
Neither is simply harder. B2B needs deeper proof and more pages for different roles in the buying group. B2C faces more competition for the same recommendations and fewer clicks per impression. Effort depends on how crowded your category is and how much trustworthy evidence you already hold.
Do B2B buyers really use AI to find vendors?
Surveys say yes. G2's March 2026 survey of 1,076 software decision-makers found 51% start research with an AI chatbot more often than Google 1. The sample is software buyers and a vendor ran the survey, so check how your own buyers behave by asking them.
Do I need different technical setup for B2B and B2C?
No. Google says no special markup or AI files are needed, and a page only has to be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet 8. Product and local schema can help B2C pages describe prices and addresses, but the crawlable base is the same.
Which metric should I track first?
Track the outcome your sales model rewards. For B2B that is qualified enquiries plus a self-reported source. For B2C it is orders, calls or visits. Add a monthly check of 30 to 50 fixed buyer prompts to see whether your brand is named.
Can a small business win against bigger brands in AI answers?
Sometimes. In G2's survey, 33% of software buyers said they bought from a vendor they had not heard of before 1. Specific pages, clear proof and consistent mentions matter more than size, but we do not guarantee any ranking or citation.
