Google AI Overviews vs AI Mode: What Is the Difference?
AI Overviews are short AI summaries that appear inside normal Google results. AI Mode is a separate tab for longer questions and follow-ups, and it runs many searches at once. Google says the same basics apply to both: a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet, and no special optimisation is needed 12.
- AI Overviews sit inside the normal results page. AI Mode is its own tab with a back-and-forth chat style.
- Google says both may use query fan-out, which runs several related searches for one question.
- Google lists no extra requirements for either feature. A page needs to be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet.
- In one study, AI Mode's cited sources matched Google's top 10 less often than AI Overviews did. Test both.
What is the difference between AI Overviews and AI Mode?
AI Overviews are summaries that Google places on the regular results page 1. Google's May 2025 announcement describes AI Mode as a separate tab in Search and the Google app that handles longer questions and follow-ups, with links to the web 2. One is a feature on the page. The other is a place you go.
Google says AI Overviews appear only when its systems judge them additive to classic Search, so many searches never show one 1. AI Mode is the full experience, where Google says it will first bring its most advanced Gemini capabilities 2.
For a website owner, the practical gap is depth. An Overview answers one question briefly. AI Mode can split a question into parts, run many searches, and keep a conversation going.
How do they compare side by side?
The table sets the two features against the same questions. Items marked as Google's own words come from Google's documentation and announcements.
| Question | AI Overviews | AI Mode |
|---|---|---|
| Where does it appear? | Inside the normal Google results page 1. | In a separate tab in Search and the Google app 2. |
| How often? | Only when Google judges it additive to classic Search 1. | When the user opens the tab. |
| Question style | One search, a short summary. | Longer questions and follow-ups. Google says AI Mode queries are three times longer than traditional searches 3. |
| How does it search? | May use query fan-out 1. | Splits a question into subtopics and runs many searches at once 2. |
| Eligibility for a link | Page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet 1. | The same requirement 1. |
| Special optimisation | None needed beyond standard SEO, per Google 1. | None needed, per Google 1. |
| Reporting | Counted in Search Console under the Web search type 1. | Counted in the same place, not split out 1. |
| Overlap of cited pages with Google's top 10 | About 67% by URL in a Semrush study of 5,000 keywords 4. | About 35% by URL in the same study 4. |
Why does AI Mode behave differently?
AI Mode is built for conversation and multi-step tasks. Google's announcement lists Deep Search, which runs many searches and produces a cited report, plus voice and camera input, shopping and agentic tasks. Several of those were still in development or limited to Labs at announcement 2.
Usage shows the shift. In its Q4 2025 remarks, Alphabet said queries in AI Mode are three times longer than traditional searches, and nearly one in six are non-text, using voice or images 3. These are company-reported figures with no stated sample.
Longer, richer questions mean more sub-questions per answer. That is why one page seldom covers a whole prompt. See what query fan-out is for how to plan pages around the parts.
Do the two features cite the same pages?
Only partly. Semrush compared 5,000 keywords in 2025. Cited sources in AI Overviews overlapped Google's top 10 by about 86% of domains and 67% of URLs, while AI Mode sources overlapped by about 54% of domains and 35% of URLs 4. AI Mode's organic results shared 58% of URLs with AI Overviews 4.
Read that carefully. Domain overlap is much higher than URL overlap, because the engines often cite a different page from the same site. Semrush also warns that AI Mode can personalise answers, so results may not repeat, and that it sells the tools it recommends 4.
Ahrefs found a related shift. About 76% of AI Overview citations came from the top 10 results in July 2025, but only 37.9% did in a March 2026 re-run of 863,000 keyword results 5. Ahrefs suspects heavier query fan-out, but calls this a hypothesis, and notes its method changed between studies 5.
Do you optimise differently for each?
Not according to Google. Its documentation says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, nor other special optimisations 1. The basics it names are a crawlable site, internal links and structured data that matches visible text. It says no new machine-readable files or special schema.org markup are needed 1.
Hypothesis, not from Google: the format of the answer matters more than the feature name. Short, direct answers suit Overviews. Pages that cover a topic's sub-questions suit AI Mode, where one question becomes many searches. Neither claim comes from Google, so treat it as a test plan.

How do you measure each one?
You cannot split them in Google's own data. Google says traffic from AI features is included in Search Console's overall search data and reported in the Performance report under the Web search type 1. So Search Console will not tell you which feature sent a visit.
Track by prompts instead. Pick 10 buyer questions, run each in a normal search and in the AI Mode tab, and record whether you are cited. Repeat monthly, because Google says recrawling can take from several days to several months 1.
A simple log is enough. The layout below uses placeholder values, not real results.
- Prompt | Overview shown? | We cite in Overview? | We cite in AI Mode? | Who is cited instead
- best [category] for [buyer] | yes | no | yes | site-a.com, site-b.com
- how much does [service] cost | no | n/a | no | site-c.com
- [category] vs [category] | yes | yes | yes | site-a.com
Can you opt out of either feature?
You can limit what Google shows, but you cannot opt out of one feature alone. Google says to use nosnippet, data-nosnippet, max-snippet or noindex to limit what appears in AI features 1. These apply to Search overall, so they also change your normal snippets.
Google-Extended is a different control. Google's page says it addresses AI training and grounding in other Google systems, not these Search features 1. Confirm in Google's documentation before you change robots.txt, and use the URL Inspection tool to check what Googlebot sees 1.
Which should you plan for first?
Plan for both with one set of pages. The same indexed, snippet-eligible page can be linked in either feature 1. Then test where you appear.
If you must choose, look at your own questions. Short, factual queries suit Overviews. Long, comparison or planning queries lean towards AI Mode. The quiz below turns that into a first move.
Frequently asked questions
Are AI Overviews and AI Mode the same thing?
Do I need different SEO for AI Mode?
Google says there are no additional requirements for either feature and no special optimisations are necessary 1. A page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet. Our advice is to test both and compare results.
Can I see AI Mode traffic in Search Console?
Only as part of overall search data. Google says AI feature traffic is included in Search Console and reported under the Web search type, so you cannot split AI Overviews from AI Mode there 1.
Do both features cite the same pages as Google's top 10?
Not fully. A Semrush study of 5,000 keywords found about 67% URL overlap for AI Overviews and about 35% for AI Mode 4. The study is from a tool vendor and covers 2025, so treat it as a snapshot.
What is query fan-out?
It means the system runs several related searches for one question. Google says both AI Overviews and AI Mode may use it, across subtopics and data sources 1. It is why a page can be cited for a question you never typed.
