How to Do AI SEO on a Small Budget
You can start AI SEO for close to nothing: let search bots read your site, fix your five most important pages, publish clear answers to the ten questions customers ask most, and track results by hand each month. Your main cost is about 25 to 40 hours of your time. Skip paid trackers, mass-produced pages and anything that promises a fixed ranking.
- Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode need no special requirements beyond normal search eligibility, so basics come first.
- Spend time, not money: crawl access, five core pages, ten customer-question pages, and a monthly check of 20 prompts.
- Paid trackers start at roughly $25 to $29 a month for 15 prompts, but they are useful only after you have pages worth tracking.
- Skip mass-produced pages, bought links and any promise of a ranking. They cost money and add risk.
What is the cheapest way to get started with AI SEO?
The cheapest start is a short list of free or low-cost actions, done in order. First check that search bots can read your site. Then fix your five most important pages. Then answer the ten questions your customers ask before they buy. Last, check by hand once a month whether assistants mention you.
None of this needs a paid tool. Plan on roughly 25 to 40 hours in total, about 6 to 10 hours a week for the first month, with the last four pages finishing in week 5 or 6. These are our planning estimates, not measured figures.
The rest of this page explains the order, what each step costs, and what to skip.
Why are the basics enough to begin?
Google says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and no special optimisations are needed. A page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet 1. In plain terms, ordinary good search practice is the entry ticket.
The same page lists the practical basics: allow crawling in robots.txt and in any CDN (content delivery network) or host setting, link pages to each other, keep important content as text, and make structured data match the visible page 1. All of these are one-off jobs that cost time, not money.
OpenAI adds one point for ChatGPT. Sites opted out of its OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though they may still appear as navigational links, and the opt-out runs through robots.txt 4. So a blocked bot is the cheapest mistake to fix.
Which actions give the most for the least money?
Work down the table in order and stop when your time runs out. The costs are typical ranges for a small site, and the hours are our estimates.
A rule of thumb: do not move to a lower row until the row above is finished. A tracker on a site whose pages blocked the bots only measures the problem.
| Order | Action | Cash cost | Hours | Why it comes here |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Check robots.txt, CDN and firewall rules for search bots | None | 1 to 2 | A blocked bot cannot cite you |
| 2 | Rewrite your five core pages to open with the answer | None | 5 to 8 | Pages that already get visits benefit first |
| 3 | Publish 10 pages answering real customer questions | None | 15 to 25 | Gives assistants something quotable |
| 4 | Add an About page, author names and real contact details | None | 2 to 3 | Trust is the most important part of E-E-A-T 2 |
| 5 | Set up Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools | None to low | 1 to 2 | Shows what is indexed and what is cited |
| 6 | Hand-check 20 prompts monthly in a sheet (about 60 runs: 20 prompts in three assistants) | None | 2 to 3 | Your baseline and your proof |
| 7 | Earn two or three real mentions where buyers look | Low | Ongoing | Independent mentions give buyers more reasons to trust you |
Which ten pages should you write first?
Start with the questions your sales and support teams hear most. Open your inbox, call notes and chat logs, and list the 20 most frequent questions. Choose the ten where a clear answer would change a buying decision.
Write for people, not for bots. Google defines people-first content as content created mainly for people and not to manipulate rankings, and says trust is the most important part of E-E-A-T 2. The same page lists warning signs: mass-produced content and content made mainly to attract search visits 2. Ten pages you can stand behind beat a hundred thin ones.
Use first-hand detail that a generic article lacks: your prices where you can share them, your process, your own photos or numbers. See how to show first-hand experience and how to write answer-first intros. Our pick keywords for AI SEO guide covers choosing questions.
How can you measure results without paying for a tool?
Use the search engines' own reports and a sheet. Google's Search Console shows how a site performs on Google Search, including queries, pages and indexing status 3. Google says clicks and impressions from AI Overviews and AI Mode are included in the overall Web search data, not in a separate report 1.
Bing Webmaster Tools has an AI Performance report, published in February 2026, showing citations, average cited pages and grounding queries for Microsoft Copilot and AI summaries in Bing. Microsoft says the data is a sample 5.
Then keep a sheet of 20 prompts and run them by hand once a month. Our guide to setting up an AI visibility spreadsheet has the layout. Add the question "How did you hear about us?" to your forms, as Ahrefs advises, with AI tools as one option 8.
When is a paid tracking tool worth it?
A paid tracker is worth it when the monthly hand-check takes more than an hour or two, or when you need history to show a board. Otterly.AI lists a Lite plan at $29 a month for 15 prompts and a Standard plan at $189 a month for 100 prompts, across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot 6. The page shows a second set of lower prices without saying which applies, and prices change.
Fifteen prompts is below the 20 we suggest for a hand-check, so a Lite plan may not cover your list. Test the free trial that the page mentions, and compare tools using our AI visibility tracking tools comparison.
Do not buy a tracker first. You need pages worth tracking, and a baseline taken by hand costs nothing.
What should you skip when money is tight?
Skip mass-produced pages. Google lists them among the warning signs in its helpful-content guidance 2, and a thin page is rarely worth quoting.
Skip special AI files as a first step. Google says no new machine-readable files, AI text files or special markup are needed for AI Overviews and AI Mode 1. That is Google's statement about its own features. We hold no source on whether other assistants use such files, so treat llms.txt as a later, optional job.
Skip any supplier who promises a fixed result. Google says no one can guarantee a number one ranking, and warns against anyone claiming a special relationship with Google 9. Also skip bought links and "AI visibility packages" that cannot show their method.
When should you stop doing it yourself and hire help?
Hire when your time is worth more than the fee, or when the work needs skills you lack, such as technical fixes. A survey of over 300 SEO professionals reported by Backlinko puts entry-level retainers below $500 a month and small-business retainers at $501 to $1,000, with a typical monthly cost of $1,000 to $2,500 7. The method behind those figures is not published, and they cover classic SEO.
Disclosure: we sell AI SEO. Our cheapest plan, Strategic Consulting, is a one-time $1,000 fee: we audit your brand and site and hand you a three-month plan, and you do the work. That can suit a small budget better than a retainer, but only if you have the hours to carry it out, and the free steps here come first either way. Our done-for-you plans start at $3,000 a month. If you later want a firm to work from a written brief, see how to write an AI SEO brief.
Whatever you choose, give it time. Google says some changes show in hours and others take several months, and suggests waiting a few weeks before judging 10.
Frequently asked questions
Can I do AI SEO for free?
Mostly yes, if you count your own time as free. Checking bot access, rewriting core pages, answering customer questions and hand-tracking prompts need no paid tool. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode have no extra requirements beyond normal search eligibility 1.
What is the single most important cheap action?
Make sure search bots are not blocked. OpenAI says sites opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers, though they may still appear as navigational links 4. A blocked bot cannot cite you, so check robots.txt, your CDN and any firewall rule before writing anything new.
Are paid AI visibility tools worth it for a small business?
Not at the start. Otterly.AI lists plans from $29 a month for 15 prompts 6, but a tool only measures; it does not fix anything. Take a hand baseline first, then pay once the monthly check takes too long or you need history.
How long before I see results on a small budget?
Nobody can say exactly. Google says some changes take effect in hours and others take several months, and suggests waiting a few weeks before judging 10. Treat the first three months as building and baselining, and judge progress by pages published and prompts mentioned.
Should I use AI to write all my pages to save money?
Use AI for drafts and structure, not for unchecked bulk output. Google warns that mass-produced content is a sign to re-evaluate, and encourages accurate bylines and suggests explaining how automation or AI was used when content is substantially automated 2. Add your own facts, then have a person check every claim.
