Best AI SEO Report Templates: Which Structure to Use
Use a one-page summary for executives, a monthly report for the marketer who does the work, and a prompt log for tracking AI answers. All three should show Search Console clicks and impressions, AI referral visits, whether you appear in a fixed list of buyer prompts, and enquiries. Add dates and notes on what did not work.
- Pick the template by audience: one page for executives, a monthly report for operators, a prompt log for tracking AI answers.
- Search Console has no separate AI Overviews filter, and GA4 counts AI Overviews inside Organic Search.
- AI referral clicks are small, so report visibility and enquiries next to visits.
- Date every AI answer you record, because results change between checks.
Which AI SEO report template should you use?
Use the template that matches who reads it. A busy executive needs one page with five numbers and a decision. The person doing the work needs a monthly report with detail. Anyone tracking AI answers needs a log of the same prompts, checked on set dates.
An AI SEO report shows how well your business appears and performs in AI tools such as ChatGPT and Perplexity, and in Google search. A prompt log is a table of the same buyer questions you ask AI tools each month, with what each answer said and whether you were named.

How do the six report structures compare?
The table compares the structures by reader, length and weak point. Choose one as your base, then borrow rows from the others.
| Structure | Reader | Length | Core content | Main weakness |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| CEO one-pager | Founder or executive | 1 page | Five numbers, one win, one risk, one decision | Hides detail and method |
| Monthly operator report | Marketer or SEO lead | 3 to 6 pages | Search data, AI referrals, pages shipped, fixes, next month | Easy to pad with activity |
| Prompt log | Anyone tracking AI answers | A table | Prompt, engine, date, named or not, sources shown | Answers vary between runs |
| Agency client report | Buyer of agency work | 2 to 4 pages | Deliverables vs plan, outcomes, issues, scope for next month | Can show activity without outcomes |
| Technical health sheet | Developer | 1 to 2 pages | Crawler access, rendering, errors, redirects | Says nothing about demand |
| Automated dashboard | Team that checks often | Live | Charts from connected data | Looks precise, can hide wrong setup |
What numbers belong in every AI SEO report?
Every report needs six numbers: Google clicks, Google impressions, AI referral visits, prompt presence, enquiries and pages shipped. The one-pager below combines clicks and impressions on one line, so it shows five lines. Google's Search Console performance report gives clicks, impressions, click-through rate and average position, and lets you filter by date, page and query 1. Use it as the base for search data.
AI referral visits come from Google Analytics. GA4's default channel group has an AI Assistant channel for visits from sources like ChatGPT, and it excludes Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, which GA4 counts inside Organic Search 3. Check Admin, then Channel groups, to see whether your property has it. If not, build a custom channel group as Google describes 4.
Prompt presence is the share of your tracked prompts where an AI answer names or cites you. Enquiries are the form fills and calls you can tie to the work. Our guide to setting up self-reported attribution shows how to capture them.
What can't the data tell you?
It cannot separate Google's AI features from ordinary search. Google says sites that appear in AI Overviews and AI Mode are reported in the Performance report under the Web search type, and it describes no separate filter 2. So any claim about AI Overview clicks from Search Console alone is a guess.
It also understates AI's reach, because many AI answers end with no click. Ahrefs analysed about 35,000 websites and found AI sent about 0.1% of traffic (published March 2025, so older data). It argued that attributable traffic understates AI's value and that trackable visits are a byproduct 5. Ahrefs also notes that some AI visits are recorded as direct traffic, so the AI Assistant channel will undercount. That is why a report needs prompt presence and enquiries next to visits.
Finally, AI answers change from run to run. Record the date, the engine and the exact prompt every time. Run each prompt more than once if the answer matters.
What does a good CEO one-pager look like?
It answers four things: are we more visible, did it bring business, what is blocked and what should we decide. Keep it to one page. Our how-to on reporting AI SEO results to your CEO goes through each line.
- Month: ______ Prepared by: ______
- 1. Google clicks / impressions: ___ / ___ (change vs last month: ___)
- 2. AI referral visits (GA4 AI Assistant channel): ___
- 3. Prompt presence: ___ of ___ tracked prompts name us (last month: ___)
- 4. Enquiries linked to search or AI: ___ (how we know: ___)
- 5. Pages shipped and fixes made: ___
- One win: ______
- One risk or block: ______
- Decision needed from you: ______
- Caveat: AI answers vary; numbers are from checks on dates ______
How do you keep a prompt log that stays honest?
Fix a list of 20 to 50 buyer prompts and keep the wording the same each month. Record each check on its own row. Add a note column for anything odd, such as an engine citing a competitor or a wrong fact about you. See how to build a prompt list and the free AI Prompt List Builder.
Compare months only when the prompts, engines and settings match. If you change the list, start a new baseline and say so in the report.
- date | engine | prompt | named_us (yes/no) | cited_url | competitors_named | answer_correct (yes/no) | notes
- YYYY-MM-DD | ChatGPT | best invoicing software for freelancers | no | none | A, B, C | yes | invented example: we are missing on pricing questions
- YYYY-MM-DD | Perplexity | best invoicing software for freelancers | yes | /pricing | A, B | no | invented example: wrong plan price quoted
What should an agency or consultant report contain?
It should show deliverables against the plan and outcomes next to them. Google advises asking an SEO how success will be measured and for examples of past work 6. A report that lists only tasks done, such as links built or pages published, shows activity, not results.
Ask for four sections: what was promised, what shipped, what moved and what did not, and the plan for next month. Ask that every chart state its date range and data source. Ask for read-only access to the source data so you can check the numbers. Our AI SEO metrics guide explains which measures matter.
How often should you report?
Report monthly, and check the prompt log monthly too. Google suggests waiting a few weeks before judging whether a change helped, and says changes can take from a few hours to several months to show up 7. Weekly reports tempt people to react to noise.
Disclosure: Chalk Labs builds reporting into its paid packages. See the AI SEO proposal page for what is included. We do not guarantee rankings, citations or lead counts.
Frequently asked questions
What should an AI SEO report include?
Google clicks and impressions from Search Console 1, AI referral visits from GA4, the share of tracked prompts that name you, enquiries linked to the work, and pages shipped and fixes made. Add dates, sources and notes on what did not work.
Can I see AI Overviews traffic in Search Console?
How do I track ChatGPT and Perplexity visits in GA4?
Check whether your property has the default AI Assistant channel 3. If not, create a custom channel group with a regex for assistant domains, place it above Referrals and update it as URLs change 4. Our GA4 AI traffic setup tool gives the steps.
Why is my AI traffic so small?
AI answers often end without a click. Ahrefs found AI sent about 0.1% of traffic across roughly 35,000 sites in early 2025 and argued that visits understate AI's value 5. Report visibility and enquiries next to visits.
How often should I send the report?
Monthly. Google suggests waiting a few weeks before judging a change 7, so weekly reports mostly show noise. Check urgent items, such as blocked crawlers or wrong facts, as they arise.
