Ahrefs Brand Radar vs Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit: What Differs and How to Choose

The short answer

Pick Ahrefs Brand Radar if you want to research a large database of AI prompts and pay by checks. Pick the Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit if you want a fixed prompt list tracked daily, with a visibility score and sentiment. We have not tested either, so this compares vendor pages read on 20 October 2026, not accuracy 13.

  • Ahrefs sells research across a large prompt database plus custom prompts billed in checks. Semrush sells a fixed prompt allowance with a visibility score.
  • Ahrefs lists six platforms on its Brand Radar page. Semrush names ChatGPT and Google AI Mode for its core reports.
  • Compare cost per tracked prompt, not headline price. The two vendors count usage in different units.
  • We did not test either tool. Run a one-week trial on your own prompts before paying.

Which is better, Ahrefs Brand Radar or the Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit?

It depends on your job: research or monitoring. Ahrefs Brand Radar suits people who want to explore what AI engines say about a whole topic. The Semrush toolkit suits people who want a steady dashboard for a short list of prompts.

This page uses only what each vendor publishes. We have not run either product, so we cannot say which one is more accurate. Both vendors change plans often, so check every figure on their pages before you buy.

What is each product, in plain words?

Ahrefs Brand Radar is an add-on to Ahrefs. It measures mentions, meaning your brand name appearing in an AI answer, and citations, meaning the answer linking to your pages. It also reports AI share of voice, which is your share of responses in a topic compared with competitors, and impressions weighted by the search volume behind each prompt 1.

Ahrefs says its index covers 492 million prompts, modelled from real searches in its keyword database 1. You can also add custom prompts and have them checked daily, weekly or monthly 1.

The Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit is a separate product at $99 a month. Its Visibility Overview gives an AI Visibility Score, which compares how often your brand is mentioned with the median for your top competitors 3. It also offers Prompt Research, Competitor Research, Brand Performance (share of voice and sentiment), Prompt Tracking and an AI search site audit 3.

How do they compare side by side?

What does a tracked prompt actually cost?

Headline prices hide the unit. Ahrefs counts checks and Semrush counts prompts, so convert both to a cost per prompt each month before you compare them.

Ahrefs says its $50 Basic package gives 2,500 checks, enough for about 80 prompts daily on one platform 2. That is roughly $0.63 per prompt per platform. Semrush's base toolkit gives 25 tracked prompts for $99, about $3.96 each, and extra blocks of 50 prompts cost $60, about $1.20 each 3. These are our own divisions of vendor prices.

Do not read this as Ahrefs being six times cheaper. Ahrefs lists the Brand Radar AI add-on from $199 a month and sells custom prompt packages separately 2. Its pricing page does not say what the $199 tier includes, so check whether the $50 package needs the add-on or a paid Ahrefs plan before you compare. The Semrush $99 price bundles research, scoring, sentiment and a site audit 3.

Worked cost check: 40 prompts on 2 platforms, tracked daily
  • Ahrefs: 40 prompts x 2 platforms x 30 days = 2,400 checks a month.
  • That fits inside the $50 Basic package of 2,500 checks [s2].
  • Semrush: 40 prompts exceeds the 25 on the $99 base toolkit.
  • Base $99 plus one 50-prompt block at $60 = $159 a month [s3].
  • Check whether Semrush counts the second platform as separate prompts.

How reliable are the numbers either tool shows?

Neither vendor page states how many responses are sampled per prompt, so treat both as trend indicators, not exact counts. Ahrefs itself describes AI answers as inherently volatile and recommends tracking a sample of prompts 7.

More runs help only a little, according to a rival vendor's study; see manual versus automated prompt tracking for the numbers 5.

Your choice of prompts matters more than run frequency. Profound found that changing the prompt mix moved citation share by roughly ten times more than daily drift 5. Both tools stand or fall on whether your prompt list matches real buyer questions.

Which workflow suits which tool?

Ahrefs fits a research workflow. You ask which prompts in your topic mention competitors but not you, then publish pages to close the gap. The prompt database and impressions weighting exist for that job 1.

Semrush fits a monitoring workflow. You fix a prompt list, check the visibility score each week and watch sentiment. Semrush's own guide says to start with around 30 prompts and keep them unchanged for at least a month 6.

That guide also notes there is no backfill, so data starts on the day you create the campaign. A true latest-28-days against previous-28-days comparison needs about eight weeks 6. Expect two months before the trend line means anything, on either tool.

How do you test both before paying?

Run the same 20 prompts through both for one billing month and compare the output with a manual check. Semrush offers no free trial, so budget $99 for it 3. Ahrefs sells Brand Radar as an add-on, so ask whether you can try it on a paid plan first 1.

Score each tool against your own list. The template below keeps the test fair.

One-month test plan (copy and fill in)
  • Prompts: 20 questions a buyer would ask, written before you open either tool.
  • Manual check: ask ChatGPT each prompt yourself and note brand and cited URLs.
  • Compare: does the tool show the same brands you saw? Count matches out of 20.
  • Export: can you get your data out as CSV, and how many rows?
  • Decision: keep the tool whose output matched your manual check and whose cost per prompt you can defend.

What decision rules should you use?

Choose Ahrefs Brand Radar if you already use Ahrefs and your main question is which topics and prompts you are missing. Choose the Semrush toolkit if you already use Semrush and want one score for the board.

Choose neither yet if you track fewer than 25 prompts. A spreadsheet and the free reports in Search Console may be enough, and our page on manual versus automated prompt tracking shows when. For a wider market view, see AI visibility tracking tools compared.

You can also combine them in time rather than in budget. Use one tool for a quarter of research, then keep a smaller tracking list afterwards. Chalk Labs offers audits that do this by hand, but you do not need us to run the test above.

Frequently asked questions

Does Ahrefs Brand Radar track ChatGPT?

Yes. Ahrefs lists ChatGPT with AI Overviews, AI Mode, Gemini, Copilot and Perplexity on its Brand Radar page, and says Claude is available at 8 checks per update 1. Check how many checks each platform consumes before you plan your prompt list.

How much is the Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit?

Semrush lists the toolkit at $99 a month with no free trial. It includes 25 tracked prompts, and 50 more prompts cost $60 a month 3. Semrush also sells SEO plans with AI features, which start higher 4.

Can I use both tools together?

You can, but a cheaper path is to run each for one month on the same 20 prompts, compare them with a manual check, then keep one. Both report mentions, citations or a visibility score for your brand, so the second subscription may add little. Your test will show whether that holds for you.

Are the results from these tools accurate?

They are estimates from sampled answers. Ahrefs calls AI answers inherently volatile 7. A Profound study found once-a-day tracking close to ten-times-a-day for visibility 5. Treat the trend as useful and any single day's number as noisy.

Do I need a paid tool to start?

No. Start with 20 to 30 buyer prompts in a spreadsheet and a monthly manual check. Move to a paid tool when the list outgrows your time. Our guide to building a prompt list shows how.
