AI SEO Audit Only vs Done-for-You Execution: Which Should You Buy?
Buy an audit and strategy only if you have people who can build and publish pages, and you need a clear plan and measurement. Buy done-for-you execution if nobody on your team has the time or skills to produce the work. An audit tells you what to do. Execution does it. Neither can promise rankings or AI citations.
- An audit finds gaps and sets priorities. Execution writes, publishes and maintains the pages.
- The deciding factor is your team's capacity to build pages, not the size of your budget.
- Google says an audit should give realistic estimates, and that no one can guarantee a number one ranking.
- Chalk Labs sells both ($1,000 one-time, or $3,000 to $4,000 a month), so read our view as one option among several.
Which is better: an AI SEO audit or full execution?
The better choice depends on your situation. It turns on who will do the work after the report arrives. The right choice depends on who will do the work after the report arrives. An audit gives you a diagnosis and a plan. Execution gives you the finished pages and the upkeep.
A common failure is a good report that nobody has time to act on, so it sits in a folder. If that sounds like your team, an audit alone will waste money. If you have a capable writer or developer and need direction, execution would be paying twice for skills you own.
Disclosure: Chalk Labs sells both options, so we gain whichever you pick. We have tried to describe each side as a neutral buyer would.
What does each option actually include?
An audit covers research and advice. Typical parts are a check of whether AI crawlers can read your site, a set of buyer questions run through AI assistants, a list of pages to build or fix, and a way to measure progress. Our guide on how to run an AI SEO audit yourself shows the do-it-yourself version, and the definition of an AI SEO audit explains the parts.
Execution adds the production work. Someone researches each query, writes the page, adds structure and links, publishes it, then reviews how it performs and rewrites weak pages. The audit is the first step of this, not a separate thing.
Scope is the main difference, so ask any provider to list deliverables in plain words. A vague phrase such as 'content support' tells you nothing about how many pages you get.
| Question | Audit and strategy only | Done-for-you execution |
|---|---|---|
| What you receive | Research, a priority list, page briefs and measurement. | The same, plus pages written, published, tuned and rewritten. |
| Who builds the pages | Your team or another vendor. | The provider. |
| Your time needed | High: you brief writers, review drafts and publish. | Lower: you approve facts and give access. |
| Chalk Labs price | Strategic Consulting, $1,000 one-time. Page creation is not included. | Strategic Execution, $3,000 a month for 100 answer pages, or Deep Execution, $4,000 a month for 200. |
| Main risk | The plan is never carried out. | Thin or generic pages, and less control over your voice. |
| Speed of visible change | Depends on how fast your team ships. | Depends on the provider's output, then on search engines. |
| Best fit | Teams with writers and developers who lack direction. | Teams with no spare capacity for content. |
How do you know if your team can execute an audit?
Count hours, not intentions. Ask your writer how long one researched page takes them, and multiply by the number of pages in the plan. Ask who will write the pages, who will approve facts, who can edit the site, and how many hours each person has free every week.
Run a simple test before you buy. Pick one finding from any free check, such as a page that does not answer its own question, and ask your team to fix it this week. If it ships, an audit will probably be acted on. If it stalls, you have learned that capacity is your real problem.
A useful rule: if the answer to 'who will publish page one?' is a name and a date, buy the audit. If the answer is 'we will find someone', price execution too.
How long do results take, and does execution speed them up?
Execution can speed up publishing, but it cannot speed up search engines. Google's own guide says some changes take effect within hours and others several months, and suggests waiting a few weeks before judging whether work helped 2.
So a done-for-you plan that publishes 100 pages does not mean 100 pages earning traffic soon after. Pages still need to be found, indexed and trusted. Be wary of any provider who sells speed as a certainty.
Our own published cases are Meru Trophy, a local shop in Bengaluru that reached 27,300 Google clicks over 16 months, and shilikajain.com, a new site that ranked first for one niche phrase within a month. Both are small, and neither proves a result for your business. They are Chalk Labs' own published cases, one local shop and one personal site, and say nothing about your sector or timeline.
What does Google say about hiring an SEO and about promised results?
Google says no one can guarantee a number one ranking, and advises hiring someone else if an SEO promises first place 1. It also suggests asking what results to expect and in what timeframe, and how success will be measured 1.
The same page says an audit should give realistic estimates of improvement and of the work involved 1. That is a good test for any audit you are quoted: does it estimate effort, or only list problems? It also advises giving an auditor read-only access to Search Console at that stage 1.
On AI search specifically, Google's July 2026 guide says optimizing for generative AI search is still SEO, and urges caution with third-party tools that promise ranking success 3. The same advice applies to providers.
What does SEO help cost in general, and where do these prices sit?
Prices vary widely, and there is no published benchmark for AI SEO audits that we could verify. For general SEO, an Ahrefs poll of 439 SEO providers reported an average monthly SEO cost of $2,917, with retainers averaging $3,209 for agencies and $1,348.63 for freelancers 4. The most common retainer band in that poll was $501 to $1,000 a month 4.
Ahrefs notes that its averages assume each respondent charges the top of their price band, so real averages may be lower 4. Treat these figures as a rough range for SEO in general, not for AI SEO work.
For reference, Chalk Labs charges $1,000 one-time for audit and strategy, and $3,000 or $4,000 a month for execution with 100 or 200 pages. The monthly plans are pre-paid monthly and can be paused or stopped at the end of any month. These are not like-for-like with the Ahrefs poll.
What are the decision rules for choosing?
Choose audit only when three things are true: you have a writer and an editor with free hours, a person can change your site, and you want an outside view to set priorities. Choose execution when you lack any of the three, or when speed of publishing matters more than control of every sentence.
Whichever you choose, ask for three things in writing: the list of deliverables, how you will see progress, and what happens at the end of month one. A provider unwilling to define these is a risk in either model.
Can you start with an audit and move to execution later?
Yes, and some buyers should. Start with the audit, ship the top three fixes yourself, then decide whether to buy production for the rest. This costs the one-time consulting fee and proves your team's real capacity.
Check the exit terms. Our consulting plan is a one-time fee. Our execution plans run as a three-month programme, pre-paid monthly, and can be paused or stopped at the end of any month, with no further pre-payment owed. We do not guarantee rankings, citations or lead counts, because search engines and AI models are third parties. For a wider view of providers, see freelancer vs agency and in-house vs agency.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between an AI SEO audit and AI SEO execution?
An audit researches your visibility, lists problems and sets priorities. Execution carries out the plan by writing, publishing, structuring and maintaining pages. The audit is usually the first step of execution, so the real question is who does the building afterwards.
Is an AI SEO audit worth it on its own?
It is worth it when you can act on the findings quickly. Google says an audit should give realistic estimates of improvement and of the work involved 1. If your report ends without effort estimates or priorities, it is a list of problems, not a plan.
How much does Chalk Labs charge for each?
Strategic Consulting is $1,000 one-time and does not include page creation. Strategic Execution is $3,000 a month and publishes 100 answer pages. Deep Execution is $4,000 a month and publishes 200. The monthly plans are pre-paid monthly, and you can pause or stop at the end of any month.
Can any provider promise AI citations or rankings?
No. Google states that no one can guarantee a number one ranking 1. AI models are third-party systems that change often. We do not guarantee rankings, citations or lead counts, and you should be cautious of anyone who does.
Should a small business skip both and do it alone?
Possibly. If you have time, start with the free checks and our do-it-yourself guides. Hire help when the plan is clear but the work does not get done, or when you cannot judge the quality of what you are buying.
