What Is an AI SEO Audit and What Does It Include?
An AI SEO audit is a structured check of whether AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity can reach, understand and cite your website. It covers crawler access, page rendering, content answers, brand facts, mentions elsewhere and measurement. It ends with a ranked list of fixes, not a score alone.
- An AI SEO audit has six parts: access, rendering, content, entity facts, mentions and measurement.
- It extends a classic SEO audit; it does not replace one, because indexing and quality still come first.
- Software can measure parts of it, but a person must judge content quality and fix priority.
- A good audit ends with a ranked action list and a baseline you can re-measure monthly.
What is an AI SEO audit?
An AI SEO audit is a review of how well your website and brand work for AI search tools. Those tools read the web, pick sources and write answers. The audit asks whether you are readable, credible and quotable to them.
It builds on a classic SEO audit. Google says that to appear in its AI Overviews and AI Mode, a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet, and that there are no additional requirements 1. So the basics of crawling, indexing and quality come first.
The AI part adds new questions. Which bots can you reach? Do your pages answer the sub-questions an assistant asks? What do assistants say about your brand today?
What does an AI SEO audit include?
Six areas make up a complete audit. The table shows what each checks and how it is checked. Each row can be done by hand or with a tool.
| Part | Question it answers | How it is checked |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Crawl access | Can AI bots reach my pages? | robots.txt rules, firewall and CDN settings, server logs |
| 2. Rendering | Is my content in the HTML? | View source and a fetch with scripts off |
| 3. Content | Do my pages answer buyer questions first? | Prompt list, page-by-page review, answer blocks |
| 4. Entity facts | Are my name, services and details consistent? | Site, profiles and directories compared side by side |
| 5. Mentions | Am I named in places AI tools read? | Manual prompt runs and third-party mention tracking |
| 6. Measurement | Can I see AI visits and citations? | GA4 channels, Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools |
How does the audit check crawler access?
It lists every AI bot and checks whether your robots.txt, firewall and content network allow or block it. The bots have separate jobs. OpenAI documents OAI-SearchBot for ChatGPT search results, GPTBot for training and ChatGPT-User for user-triggered visits, and recommends allowing OAI-SearchBot 2.
Anthropic lists ClaudeBot, Claude-User and Claude-SearchBot 3. Perplexity lists PerplexityBot and Perplexity-User 4. Google says its Google-Extended token controls use for Gemini training and grounding but does not affect inclusion in Google Search 5.
A common finding is an accidental block: a security rule or a copied robots.txt that shuts out the very bots you want. Our AI crawler checker tests this, and how to check if AI bots can crawl your site walks through it.
Why does the audit test how pages render?
Because some AI crawlers do not run scripts. Vercel's December 2024 analysis found that OpenAI's, Anthropic's and Perplexity's crawlers it tested did not render JavaScript, while Gemini did, because it uses Google's infrastructure. The data is nearly two years old, so test your own pages 6. If your prices or services appear only after a script runs, some bots may see an empty page.
Microsoft adds that AI systems may not render hidden content such as tabs or expandable menus, and that key information should not live only in images or PDFs 7.
The test is simple: fetch the page with scripts off and check that the main text, headings and facts are there. If they are not, the fix is usually server-side rendering, covered in how to make your site server-side rendered.
How does it judge content and brand facts?
It starts from buyer questions, not keywords. The auditor writes the 20 to 50 prompts a buyer would ask, runs them, and checks whether your pages answer each sub-question. Our query fan-out research guide shows how to find those sub-questions.
Then it checks brand facts. Your name, address, services, prices and founder details should match across your site and profiles. Conflicts confuse people and machines alike.
Finally it checks proof: named authors, sourced numbers, real examples and pages that begin with a direct answer, as described in what an answer block is.
What do AI tools search for when asked about this topic?
The searches below come from one Claude run on 20 October 2026, so treat them as a sample from a single engine.
Claude ran five searches, splitting the topic into definition, checklist, tools, cost and comparison with a traditional audit. This page covers four of the five directly (definition, checklist, cost, comparison with a traditional audit); tool comparison is covered only through the price list in the cost section.

What does the audit say about measurement?
It checks that you can see AI traffic and citations at all. Google says clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode are included in overall Search Console web traffic, not reported as a separate AI type 1. In GA4, Google's AI Assistant channel excludes AI Overviews and AI Mode, which sit inside Organic Search 8.
Bing Webmaster Tools launched AI Performance in public preview on 10 February 2026. It reports citations across Copilot and Bing AI summaries, including a sample of grounding queries, and Microsoft says the counts do not show ranking or importance 9.
The audit records a baseline so later months can be compared. For setup, see how to track AI traffic in GA4.
What does the audit output look like?
A useful report ranks fixes by effort and likely effect. The sample below is invented to show the shape. It is not a real client report.
- HIGH Crawl: firewall rule blocks OAI-SearchBot -> allow it, retest in 24 hours
- HIGH Rendering: price table loads by script -> serve it in the HTML
- MEDIUM Content: 4 of 10 buyer prompts have no page that answers them -> brief 4 pages
- MEDIUM Entity: phone number differs on site and two directories -> align
- LOW Mentions: no third-party profile mentions a founder name -> plan 2 outreach pieces
- BASELINE Prompt set: 10 prompts x 4 assistants; named in 3 of 40 answers
How much does an AI SEO audit cost?
A do-it-yourself audit costs time, plus optional software. Ahrefs lists a Brand Radar AI add-on from $199 per month and prompt-tracking packages from $50 per month 10. Semrush lists plans with 50 and 100 daily prompts at $199 and $299 per month on monthly billing 11. Otterly.AI lists plans from $29 per month for 15 prompts to $489 for 400 12. These are list prices read on 20 October 2026 and change often.
Expert-led audits are priced by providers and vary widely. Ahrefs' 2024 poll of 439 SEO providers reported an average SEO cost of $2,917 per month (2024 data), but that covers classic SEO, not AI audits specifically 13. We hold no reliable benchmark for one-off AI audit prices, so ask for a written scope.
Disclosure: we sell this service. Chalk Labs' Strategic Consulting plan is a one-time $1,000 fee and includes a full brand and SEO audit with a three-month plan your team carries out. Strategic Execution, at $3,000 per month, adds an AI-visibility audit across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Mode. These are options, and a do-it-yourself audit with the steps above is a valid alternative.
How is it different from a traditional SEO audit?
A traditional audit checks whether Google can crawl, index and rank your pages. An AI audit adds bot-specific access, citation checks and prompt-based testing across several assistants.
They overlap a lot. Microsoft states that crawlability, metadata, internal linking and backlinks remain essential for AI answers 7. Do the classic audit first if you never have, then add the AI layer.
Do not expect a single score to settle anything. Vendor scores may rest on each vendor's own prompt set, so ask how a score is calculated and compare your own results month to month.

Frequently asked questions
How long does an AI SEO audit take?
Time depends on site size and prompt count, and we hold no published benchmark. Ask any provider for a written timeline. Larger sites take longer because of crawling and content review.
Can I do an AI SEO audit myself?
Yes. Check robots.txt, view key pages with scripts off, write ten buyer prompts and run them in three assistants, compare your brand facts across profiles, and set up GA4 and Bing Webmaster Tools. Tools help, but the basic version needs only a spreadsheet.
How often should I repeat the audit?
Re-run the prompt tests monthly, because AI answers change quickly. Repeat the technical checks after any site rebuild, security change or move to a new host. A full audit once or twice a year is typical for small sites, though that is our judgement, not a standard.
What is the difference between an AI SEO audit and an AI visibility audit?
The terms overlap. An AI visibility audit usually focuses on whether and how AI answers mention you. An AI SEO audit covers that plus the technical and content causes: bot access, rendering, page structure and brand facts. Many providers use both names for the same service.
Can an audit make sure ChatGPT mentions me?
No. An audit finds problems and ranks fixes. AI engines are third parties, results vary between runs, and nobody can promise citations. What an audit gives you is a baseline, a clear list of changes and a way to measure whether they help.
