How much does AI SEO cost per month?
A fair planning range is about $500 to $2,500 a month for a retainer, which is a fixed monthly fee for ongoing work. Ahrefs and SE Ranking find $500 to $1,000 most common, and Backlinko's survey of over 300 SEO professionals puts the average at $1,000 to $2,500. 123
No public survey prices AI SEO by itself with a large sample. The only AI-specific figure we found is from SE Ranking's 2024 agency survey, where agencies with set prices for AI Overview work charged or planned about $937 a month. The sample is small and the price predates today's market, so treat it as a floor, not a norm. 3
AI SEO work overlaps heavily with normal SEO. Google says that optimising for generative AI search is still SEO. 10 That is why most agencies, including those selling GEO or AEO services, price it like a standard SEO retainer. The AI SEO pricing you see is mostly SEO pricing with AI tracking added.

Why do the price surveys disagree so much?
The surveys disagree because they sampled different providers and used different maths. Ahrefs says its subset averages assume each respondent charges the top of their price band, which probably pushes them up. 1
Region matters most. In Ahrefs' data, 76% of India-based SEOs charge $1,000 or less a month, while 79.1% of US and Canadian providers charge at least $1,001. 1 Backlinko says US-based services cost 3 to 5 times more than those from emerging markets, and agencies charge about 30% more than freelancers. 2
Scale also matters. SE Ranking's sample is 94% small and local-business focused, which explains its lower prices. 3 Read each number as the price of a particular kind of seller, not as a market average.
What actually drives the price of AI SEO?
Five things move the quote: how many pages are made, how many keywords or prompts are tracked, how competitive your market is, who does the work, and how often you get reports. Ask for each one in writing.
Page volume is the biggest cost line. Orbit Media's 2026 survey of 1,042 content marketers found the average blog post takes 3 hours 20 minutes to write. 8 Research, editing, schema and internal links come on top, so 100 pages is real labour.

- Seniority: a founder or expert costs more per hour than a junior writer.
- Region: where the provider is based shifts rates by a factor of three or more. 2
- Measurement: monthly AI-visibility checks across several assistants take real time or tool spend.
What does AI visibility tool pricing look like on top of the service?
Tracking tools cost far less than services. List prices in October 2026 run from about $29 to a few hundred dollars a month for small and mid-size teams. 46 Vendors change prices often, so check the live page.
The tools only measure. They do not write pages or fix your site. A provider who bundles tracking into a retainer should still tell you which tool they use and who owns the data.

Is 100 pages for a flat monthly fee good value? A worked example
Test any bulk-content quote with simple arithmetic. The numbers below are illustrative, built from public rates, and are not a claim about what any provider's cost is.
Backlinko lists a mid-level hourly rate of $75 in the US, UK and Australia. 2 Orbit's average post takes 3 hours 20 minutes. 8 At those rates, one post costs about $250 in writing time alone. This shows how much labour 100 pages implies; it is not what any provider pays, and it excludes the strategy and measurement parts of a retainer.

Does a bigger page count mean better value?
No. Google's AI optimisation guide says that creating separate pages for every possible phrasing can break its scaled content abuse policy when the aim is to game rankings or AI answers. 10 Page count alone does not raise quality.
So ask a bulk-page seller how each page differs, who checks facts, and what original value each one carries. A fair price buys useful pages, not a large number of thin ones.
How do you compare AI SEO quotes fairly?
Line up each quote on deliverables, not on the monthly number. Two quotes at the same price can differ by a factor of ten in work delivered.
Then work out your own break-even. Take the monthly cost, divide it by what one new customer is worth to you, and see how many customers you need. The calculator below does that with sample numbers. When should you spend less, or wait?
