AI SEO in the United Kingdom: How to Get Recommended by ChatGPT and Google AI
To get recommended by ChatGPT and Google AI search in the UK, let both read your site, then write the way British buyers search: solicitor, estate agent, plumber near me, prices in pounds. Allow OpenAI's OAI-SearchBot, claim your Google Business Profile, keep your company details consistent, and check your claims against ASA, consumer-law and ICO rules before you publish.
- Google sent 91.39% of UK search referrals in September 2026, and Bing 6.08%, so ordinary Google SEO still feeds Google's AI answers.
- A UK government survey found about 60% of adults had used an AI chatbot in the three months to mid-2024.
- The ASA covers claims on your own website, and since 6 April 2025 the DMCC Act bans fake reviews and drip pricing.
- The ICO says all the Data (Use and Access) Act 2025 provisions affecting data protection law are now in force.
- Chalk Labs has no published UK results. Its only regional proof is Meru Trophy in Bengaluru, India.
How do people in the UK find businesses with search and AI?
British searchers lean even harder on Google than Americans do, and many now also use AI chatbots. Statcounter recorded Google at 91.39% of UK search referrals in September 2026, with Bing at 6.08%, Yahoo at 1.32% and DuckDuckGo at 0.65% 1. These are referral clicks, not searches, and they exclude AI assistants 1.
The UK government's public attitudes tracker (wave 4, fieldwork July and August 2024) reported that about 60% of adults had used an AI chatbot for personal or work purposes in the previous three months. It put monthly use at 44% and weekly use at 23% 2. That survey is over two years old, so current use may differ.
We found no public UK data on how many people ask an AI assistant to name a local provider. Any agency quoting a precise number is guessing.

What do Google AI search and ChatGPT need from a UK site?
On many UK trade sites the blocker can be a security plug-in or content delivery network setting, not the content. Google lists the United Kingdom among the places where AI Overviews are available, with English on the language list 3. Google says there are no extra requirements or special optimisations for AI Overviews or AI Mode. A page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet 4.
For ChatGPT, OpenAI says OAI-SearchBot is the crawler that places sites in ChatGPT search. Allow it in robots.txt, the file that tells bots what they may read, and allow about 24 hours for the change to apply 5. A site can block GPTBot, which gathers training content, and still allow search 5.
Run the AI Crawler Checker on your domain. Check those settings before you rewrite any copy. Our guide to allowing AI crawlers in robots.txt gives the exact lines.
Does UK wording change what AI engines find?
Yes, so use the words your buyers use. Many UK trades and professions have different names from US ones, and a page written for Americans can miss British prompts. The table gives modelled examples, not observed data.
Google says it uses the visible content of a page to work out its language 14. Google's guidance does not address dialects, so wording is your lever. Use one spelling style across the whole site and write prices in pounds with VAT stated.
| US phrase | UK phrase | Where to use it |
|---|---|---|
| real estate agent | estate agent | Service page title and FAQ |
| lawyer | solicitor (or barrister) | Practice-area pages |
| CPA | chartered accountant | About page and credentials |
| contractor | builder or tradesperson | Home-service pages |
| apartment | flat | Property listings and guides |
| takeout | takeaway | Restaurant pages |
Which UK advertising, consumer and data rules apply to your pages?
Three sets of rules matter most: advertising codes, consumer law and data protection. Wikipedia reports that since March 2011 the Advertising Standards Authority has covered claims on a company's own website as well as paid online ads 7. Its sanctions include published rulings and referral of problem advertisers to Trading Standards 7.
On consumer law, the Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024 consumer rules have applied since 6 April 2025. They ban fake reviews and drip pricing, which means showing a low headline price and adding mandatory charges later 8. Never buy reviews, and show the full price up front.
On data, the Information Commissioner's Office says the Data (Use and Access) Act 2025 received Royal Assent on 19 June 2025. It says all provisions affecting data protection law and the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations are now in force, and that organisations need a data protection complaints process 6. This is not legal advice, so check with a UK adviser.
Which UK directories and review sites should you claim first?
Claim Google Business Profile first, then the trade directory for your sector. Google's help page lists relevance, distance and prominence as the local ranking factors, and says paying does not improve rank 9. Reviews and links from other sites feed prominence 9.
For trades, Checkatrade is a large UK example. Wikipedia reports it is headquartered in Moorgate, London, with over 53,000 member businesses and over six million published reviews by 2026 10. Its review verification is not described in detail on that page, so read the directory's own rules before relying on it.
Yelp launched in the UK in 2009 but scaled back outside North America in 2016, so do not make it a priority unless your own search shows it 11. Keep your company name, registered address and phone number identical everywhere. Our guide to local business AI search covers the checks.
Is UK B2B AI SEO really a London story?
Partly, because London anchors finance, law and a large tech cluster, but a London-only plan misses the rest of the UK. Wikipedia describes finance as London's largest industry, says four of the world's six largest law firms are headquartered there, and puts London at about 22% of UK output on older ONS data. Its 2023 GDP figure is £617.9 billion 12.
For a B2B firm, that means London buyers often ask for a provider by sector and by deal size, not by postcode. A page called 'Corporate tax advice for London scale-ups' can beat a vague 'UK accountants' page. Outside London, buyers search by city and county, so Manchester, Leeds or Bristol pages need their own proof, not a London page with a new name.
See our separate guide on AI SEO in London for city-specific tactics.
What should a UK business publish first?
Publish the page that answers the question your best buyers ask before they enquire, with a price range in pounds. Show how you are regulated, such as an SRA, FCA or Gas Safe number, only if it is true for you, and give the date you last checked it.
A good first set is one service page, one pricing page and one comparison page. Use the Answer Block Checker to test whether each page opens with its answer. For pricing pages, see how to structure a pricing page for AI.
- A boiler replacement in Leeds usually costs between £X and £Y including VAT.
- Price depends on boiler type, flue work and radiators. We quote after a free survey.
- Gas Safe registered, number 000000 (checked 20 October 2026).
What has Chalk Labs actually done in the UK?
Chalk Labs has not published UK results. Its published search results are Meru Trophy, a local trophy shop in Bengaluru that reached 27,300 Google clicks and 2.3 million impressions in 16 months, and the personal-brand site shilikajain.com 13.
The method we would bring is query research, answer pages, technical readiness and measurement. UK rules, spelling and competitors would change the detail. We do not guarantee rankings or citations in any market.
Rules and platforms that shape results
Rules to know
- ASA advertising codes (CAP Code). The self-regulatory CAP Code is the rule book for non-broadcast ads. The ASA covers claims on a company's own website, publishes rulings and can refer advertisers to Trading Standards.7
- Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024. Bans fake reviews and drip pricing. The consumer provisions have applied since 6 April 2025.8
- Data (Use and Access) Act 2025 and PECR. The ICO says all provisions affecting data protection law and PECR are in force, including a duty to have a data protection complaints process.6

Mistakes to avoid
Frequently asked questions
Does British English matter for AI search?
It matters through the words buyers type, not through a spelling filter. Google reads a page's language from its visible text 14. Use the terms your buyers use, such as solicitor and flat, and keep one spelling style across the site. Test your key prompts in ChatGPT to see which words surface competitors.
Do ASA rules apply to my website copy?
Wikipedia reports that since March 2011 the ASA has covered claims on a company's own website, not only paid ads 7. Keep price, savings and performance claims you can prove, and keep the evidence on file. This is not legal advice, so check with a UK adviser.
Are fake reviews illegal in the UK?
The Digital Markets, Competition and Consumers Act 2024 bans fake reviews and drip pricing, and its consumer rules have applied since 6 April 2025 8. Ask real customers for reviews and never pay for them.
Is Bing worth optimising for in the UK?
Bing held 6.08% of UK search referrals in September 2026, against 91.39% for Google 1. Good technical SEO serves both. We found no source showing that Bing share drives AI recommendations, so treat Bing as a small extra rather than a separate project.
