AI SEO in Ireland: How to Get Recommended by ChatGPT and Google AI
To get recommended by ChatGPT and Google AI search in Ireland, let both read your site, then treat the market as small, EU-regulated and English-first. Allow OpenAI's OAI-SearchBot, claim your Google Business Profile, show your Irish company details and euro prices, and follow GDPR and the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) code. Add Irish-language pages only where your audience needs them.
- Google sent 93.47% of Irish search referrals in September 2026, and Bing 4.21%, so Google SEO carries most of the weight.
- Eurostat found 44.93% of people in Ireland used generative AI tools in the three months before its 2025 survey, against 32.7% across the EU.
- GDPR applies to organisations in the EU and to those outside it that offer goods or services to people in the EU.
- In the 2022 census, about 40% of people aged 3 and over said they could speak Irish, but only 71,968 spoke it daily outside education.
- Chalk Labs has no published Irish results. Its only regional proof is Meru Trophy in Bengaluru, India.
How do people in Ireland find businesses with search and AI?
People in Ireland rely almost entirely on Google for search, and a high share also use AI tools. Statcounter recorded Google at 93.47% of Irish search referrals in September 2026, Bing at 4.21%, Yahoo at 0.88% and DuckDuckGo at 0.79% 1. These are referral clicks, not searches, and they exclude AI assistants 1. Ireland is a small sample, so monthly values can swing.
Eurostat reports that 32.7% of people aged 16 to 74 in the EU used generative AI tools in the three months before its 2025 survey 2. Its dataset puts Ireland at 44.93% for the same measure, with 30.88% using them for private purposes and 22.44% for work 3. Ireland sits well above the EU average, though the Eurostat news item names only Denmark, Estonia and Malta as the top three 2.
DataReportal counted 5.26 million internet users in October 2025, 98.9% of the population 4. We found no public Irish data on how many people ask an AI assistant to name a local provider.
Market snapshot: Ireland

| People who can speak Irish (2022 census) | 1,873,997, about 40% of those aged 3+; 71,968 daily outside education18 |
| .ie registrations (October 2025) | 332,297; non-Irish applicants need a real connection with Ireland11 |
| Foreign-owned firms in top 20 Irish firms | 14 of the top 20 by turnover15 |
| Chalk Labs Irish results | None published. Its regional proof is Meru Trophy in Bengaluru, India17 |
Eurostat's dataset shows 44.93% of people in Ireland used generative AI tools in the three months before its 2025 survey, against 32.7% across the EU 23. It does not show how many ask AI assistants to name local providers.
What do Google AI search and ChatGPT need from an Irish site?
Neither tool needs special markup, only access. Google lists Ireland among the places where AI Overviews are available, and the language list includes English and Irish 5. Google says there are no extra requirements or special optimisations for these features, and a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet 6.
For ChatGPT, OpenAI says OAI-SearchBot places sites in search results. Allow it in robots.txt and allow about 24 hours for the change 7.
Run the AI Crawler Checker on your domain. If a firewall blocks bots, allowing AI crawlers in robots.txt shows the lines to add.
Should your website be in Irish as well as English?
For most businesses, no, unless you serve Gaeltacht communities, schools or public bodies. In the 2022 census, 1,873,997 people aged 3 and over (about 40%) said they could speak Irish. Only 71,968 spoke it daily outside the education system, about 4% of those who can speak it 18.
Irish is the first official language under the Constitution, with English as the other 8. But a person who can speak Irish still searches in English for a plumber or an accountant. We found no study of Irish-language AI prompts.
If you add Irish pages, use a fluent reviewer, give each version its own URL and keep one language per page, as Google recommends 9. Link versions with hreflang, using ga-IE for Irish and en-IE for English 10.
- <link rel="alternate" hreflang="en-IE" href="https://yourdomain.ie/services/" />
- <link rel="alternate" hreflang="ga-IE" href="https://yourdomain.ie/ga/seirbhisi/" />
- <link rel="alternate" hreflang="x-default" href="https://yourdomain.ie/services/" />
Does a .ie domain help you get recommended?
A .ie domain signals Irish intent, and Google says country-code domains are a strong signal that a site targets a country 9. The page does not name .ie, so the principle is Google's and the application is ours.
Wikipedia reports that IE Domain Registry runs .ie, and that people outside Ireland must show a real and substantive connection with Ireland. It lists 332,297 registered domains in October 2025 11. If you serve Ireland from abroad and cannot register one, use a /ie/ section on a global domain and tag it en-IE.
Irish firms that also sell to the UK or US should run separate pages for those markets. See our pages on the United Kingdom and the United States.
Which privacy and advertising rules apply to your pages?
GDPR is the main rule, and it is wide. The European Commission says it covers organisations established in the EU and also those elsewhere that offer goods or services to people in the EU or monitor their behaviour 12. Small firms are not exempt, though some obligations ease when data processing is not core to the business 12.
The Data Protection Commission publishes guidance for organisations on transparency and on handling people's rights requests, and says its guidance is not legal advice 13. Publish a clear privacy page and honour requests.
On advertising, Wikipedia describes the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA), formerly the ASAI, as a self-regulatory body whose code is in its 7th edition, in effect since March 2016. It and the CCPC issued influencer-ad labelling guidance in October 2023 14. That page does not say whether the code is still current or covers company websites, so check asa.ie for the current edition and its scope.
How does Ireland's tech and multinational base change B2B AI SEO?
It means Irish B2B buyers are often global companies, so your pages compete with international vendors. Wikipedia reports that foreign-owned multinationals make up 14 of the top 20 Irish firms by turnover, and that Intel's 1989 investment was followed by Microsoft and Google 15. It lists software, pharmaceuticals and medical devices among the main industries 15.
For an Irish B2B firm, that suggests three moves. Show Irish and EU credentials such as GDPR practice. Name the sectors you serve, such as pharma or software. And compare yourself openly with larger international rivals. Comparison pages answer the questions B2B buyers ask, so they are worth testing.
Our guides on comparison pages that get cited and AI SEO for B2B versus B2C fit this case.
Which platforms should an Irish local business claim first?
Claim Google Business Profile first. Google's help page names relevance, distance and prominence as local ranking factors and says paying does not improve rank 16. With 93.47% of referrals going through Google 1, this is the main local lever.
We have no source ranking Irish directory sites, so use a method instead: search your top three buyer prompts, list the review and directory sites that appear, and claim the first three. Keep your business name, address and phone number identical everywhere, and show your company registration number.
Ireland is small: Wikipedia gives the 2022 census population as 5,149,139 15. So county and town pages, such as Cork, Galway or Limerick, often face few strong competitors. Build them only with real local proof.
What has Chalk Labs actually done in Ireland?
Chalk Labs has not published Irish results. Its published search results are Meru Trophy, a local trophy shop in Bengaluru that reached 27,300 Google clicks and 2.3 million impressions in 16 months, and the personal-brand site shilikajain.com 17.
The method we would bring is query research, answer pages, technical readiness and measurement. Irish rules and competitors would change the detail. We do not guarantee rankings or citations in any market.
Rules and platforms that shape results
Rules to know
- GDPR. Applies to organisations established in the EU and to others offering goods or services to people in the EU or monitoring their behaviour. SMEs must comply, with some eased obligations.12
- Data Protection Commission guidance. The regulator publishes guidance on transparency and handling people's rights requests. The guidance is not legal advice.13
- ASA Code (7th edition). Self-regulatory advertising code in effect since March 2016, with influencer-ad labelling guidance issued with the CCPC in October 2023.14

What works in Ireland
- Publish in English first, with euro prices and your Irish registration details visible 11.
- Add Irish pages only for Gaeltacht, education or public-sector audiences, with ga-IE hreflang 10.
- Use a .ie domain if you qualify, or a /ie/ section tagged en-IE if you do not 9.
- For B2B, name sectors served, show GDPR practice and compare yourself with international rivals 15.
- Build county and town pages only where you have a real office, crew or local proof.
Mistakes to avoid
- Assuming GDPR applies only to Irish firms. It also reaches non-EU firms that target people in the EU 12.
- Translating the whole site into Irish with no fluent reviewer and little audience demand 8.
- Running UK pages for Irish buyers without euro prices, Irish spelling of place names or local proof.
- Claiming ASA code rules do not apply to you without reading the code.
Frequently asked questions
Is Ireland a good market for AI SEO?
Does GDPR apply to my website if I am outside the EU?
The European Commission says GDPR applies to organisations outside the EU that offer goods or services to people in the EU or monitor their behaviour 12. It does not apply merely because an EU traveller buys from you. Ask an adviser about your own case.
Do I need a .ie domain?
Should I publish pages in Irish?
Usually not for search. About 40% of people aged 3 and over said they could speak Irish in the 2022 census, but only 71,968 spoke it daily outside education 18. Add Irish pages for Gaeltacht, education or public-sector audiences, with a fluent reviewer.
