AI SEO in South Korea: how to get recommended by ChatGPT and Google AI search
To be recommended by ChatGPT and Google AI search in South Korea, publish native Korean pages with price, scope and proof, and let OAI-SearchBot and Googlebot read them. Plan for two engines, because Naver leads on mobile while Google leads across all devices. Keep business facts identical on your site, Naver and KakaoTalk, and follow the Personal Information Protection Act on every form.
- Naver took 59.56% of Korean mobile search referrals in September 2026, ahead of Google at 35.77%, but Google led all devices at 47.97%.
- Microsoft puts Korean generative AI use at 40.6% of people aged 15 to 64 in June 2026, up 3.5 points in one quarter.
- KakaoTalk had 49.1 million monthly users, so customers expect to message you there.
- Naver surfaces blogs, Cafe communities and Knowledge iN answers, so your brand may be judged by content you do not own.
- Chalk Labs has no published Korean client result. Its only regional proof is Meru Trophy in Bengaluru, India.
How do people in South Korea search and use AI?
They use two engines, and the split depends on the device. In September 2026 Naver held 59.56% of Korean mobile search referrals and Google held 35.77% 1. Across all devices Google led at 47.97% and Naver followed at 43.06% 2. These shares count visits from a search engine, not searches typed, and they exclude AI assistants.
AI use is among the highest in the world. Microsoft's AI Economy Institute reports that 40.6% of South Koreans aged 15 to 64 used a generative AI product in June 2026, up from 37.1% in March, the largest absolute rise that quarter at 3.5 points 3. The world figure was 18.8% 3. The measure counts any generative AI product, not ChatGPT alone.
Connectivity is near universal. DataReportal counted 50.6 million internet users in October 2025, which is 97.9% of the population 4.
Market snapshot: South Korea
| Internet users (October 2025) | 50.6 million, 97.9% of the population4 |
| KakaoTalk monthly users | 49.1 million, 95.1% of the population4 |
| Naver share of mobile search referrals (September 2026) | 59.56%; Google 35.77%1 |
| Search referral share, all platforms (September 2026) | Google 47.97%; Naver 43.06%; Bing 4.83%; Daum 0.73%2 |
| Generative AI use, ages 15 to 64 (June 2026) | 40.6%; world 18.8%3 |
| Change in generative AI use, Q1 to Q2 2026 | 37.1% to 40.6%, the largest rise that quarter3 |
| Naver Knowledge iN | Over 200 million answers (Wikipedia, partly unverified)5 |
| Public data on business-buyer AI prompts | None found |
Microsoft estimates that 40.6% of South Koreans aged 15 to 64 used a generative AI product in June 2026, more than double the 18.8% world figure and a 3.5 point rise in one quarter 3. It counts any generative AI product, not ChatGPT alone.
Why do you need a plan for both Naver and Google?
Because each engine decides differently, and your buyers use both. A phone user may start on Naver, while a desktop researcher may start on Google. Ignoring either leaves a large share of discovery to competitors.
The table compares what each engine mostly draws on, based on the sources we opened. It is a working map to test, not a ranking formula.
| Question | Naver | Google and AI answers |
|---|---|---|
| Mobile referral share, September 2026 | 59.56% | 35.77% |
| All-device referral share, September 2026 | 43.06% | 47.97% |
| Content it surfaces | Its own blogs, Cafe communities, Knowledge iN answers and shopping | Open web pages that are indexed and snippet-eligible |
| What you control | Your Naver presence, plus posts you publish there | Your own site and its technical access |
| First step | Read Naver Search Advisor guidance, then test your phrases on Naver | Allow Googlebot and OAI-SearchBot, then publish answer pages |
What is KakaoTalk's role in finding a business?
KakaoTalk is where customers message you, not the page an AI cites. DataReportal reports 49.1 million KakaoTalk monthly users, which is 95.1% of the population 4. YouTube's ad reach was 42.9 million, which is 83.1% of the population 4. Those are estimates, not exact active users.
We did not test whether AI assistants read KakaoTalk content, so we make no claim about it. Put your prices, hours and policies on a public page you control. A customer who asks on KakaoTalk how much a service costs should find the same range on your site.
How should you write Korean pages for AI search?
Write them in natural Korean, with the answer in the first two sentences. Google's AI Overviews list Korea as a location and Korean as a supported language 6. The help page says only 'Korea' without naming the country, so test your own results before you rely on it. Google also says fully translated pages are not duplicates, and that language versions should link to each other with reciprocal hreflang tags using the ko code 7.
Modelled Korean query patterns help you choose headings. We have not observed these, so test them in your own search tools.
| Pattern | Meaning | Page to publish |
|---|---|---|
| [place] [service] 추천 | Recommended service in a place | Selection guide with criteria |
| [service] 가격 | Price of a service | Pricing page with ranges and inclusions |
| [service] 후기 | Reviews of a service | Customer stories with permission |
| [service] 비교 | Comparison of options | Fair comparison table |
| [place] 근처 [service] | Service near a place | Location page with address and hours |
What do PIPA and the marketing rules mean for your site?
The Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA) is enforced by the Personal Information Protection Commission. Controllers generally need explicit consent before collecting or using personal information, with separate consent for each processing activity and data type 8. A PIPA amendment passed in March 2026, with most provisions effective 11 September 2026, raises the maximum administrative penalty from 3% to 10% of total revenue in specific cases, such as repeated willful violations or breaches affecting 10 million or more people 8. Cross-border transfers generally need consent, with listed exceptions 8.
Advertising messages by electronic media need the explicit consent of the person under the Network Act. Senders must identify themselves and give opt-out instructions, and may not auto-generate contact details or hide their identity 9.
The sources we read do not say how PIPA reaches a foreign firm without a Korean presence, and they do not cover advertising claim rules 8. Ask a Korean lawyer. This page is not legal advice.
How does South Korea differ from the global playbook?
The global playbook assumes Google. In South Korea you also need a Naver plan, a Korean-language site and a presence where Korean customers talk. AI adoption is also well ahead of the world average, so the shortlist your buyer sees may already be an AI summary.
The technical basics stay the same, but you have more doors to open. Allow both Googlebot and OAI-SearchBot 10, and register the site with Naver as well. Google adds no extra requirements beyond being indexed and snippet-eligible 11. The robots.txt guide has the steps.
For another market with a strong local search player, compare the Japan page. For a market where Vietnamese-language search and Zalo matter, see the Vietnam page.
What has Chalk Labs actually done in South Korea?
Nothing we have published. Chalk Labs has no Korean client case or result, and this page does not imply one. Our only published regional result is Meru Trophy, a trophy shop in Bengaluru, India, which reached 27,300 Google clicks and 2.3 million impressions in 16 months 12.
That result came from Google, not Naver, and from a different language. What transfers is the method: query research, answer pages, technical readiness and measurement. We do not guarantee rankings or citations.
Where should you start this month?
Split the work in two, then measure each engine on its own.
- Week 1: confirm robots.txt allows OAI-SearchBot and Googlebot, and read Naver's webmaster guidance.
- Week 2: align your business name, address, phone and KakaoTalk contact across your site, Google Business Profile and Naver.
- Week 3: publish a pricing page, a service scope page, a comparison page, a location page and one case summary in native Korean.
- Week 4: run ten shortlist prompts in Korean on ChatGPT and Google, test the same phrases on Naver, note the date and brands named, and repeat monthly.
Rules and platforms that shape results
Rules to know
- Personal Information Protection Act (PIPA). Enforced by the Personal Information Protection Commission. Explicit, separate consents; cross-border transfer generally needs consent; a March 2026 amendment raises the maximum penalty to 10% of revenue in specific cases.8
- Network Act rules on electronic advertising. Advertising by electronic media needs the person's explicit consent, a clear sender identity and opt-out instructions, with no auto-generated contact lists.9
Platforms that matter here
- Naver Search, blogs, Cafe, Knowledge iN and shopping
- Google Search and Google Maps
- KakaoTalk for customer messages
- YouTube for discovery and reviews
- ChatGPT search (reads sites through OAI-SearchBot)
- Google AI Overviews and AI Mode
- Naver Smart Store for sellers
What works in South Korea
- Run two tracks: a Google and AI track for your own site, and a Naver track for the Korean community content that surfaces there.
- Write each key page in native Korean with the answer in the first two sentences, and have a native editor review it.
- Publish prices in won with inclusions, and a fair comparison table.
- Invite honest customer posts on Naver and YouTube, and never post fake reviews.
- Keep the name, address, phone and KakaoTalk contact identical across your site, Google and Naver.
- Add a
kohreflang pair if you also serve overseas buyers in English.
Mistakes to avoid
- Building only for Google and ignoring Naver's 59.56% mobile share.
- Machine-translating English pages into Korean without a native review.
- Assuming KakaoTalk chats are visible to AI assistants, which we did not test.
- Sending marketing messages without explicit consent.
- Buying fake reviews, which damage trust and may break platform rules.
