AI SEO vs Local SEO for Small Businesses: What Is the Same and What Is New

The short answer

For a small local business, AI SEO is mostly local SEO plus a few extra steps. In BrightLocal's September 2026 study, Google Business Profile made up 28.5% of citations across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and AI Overviews, and business websites 42% 1. Fix your profile, reviews and website first. Then add service pages, listings on the sites AI tools cite, and monthly prompt checks.

  • Google Business Profile made up 28.5% of local AI citations and business websites 42% (BrightLocal, September 2026).
  • Whitespark's expert survey puts best-of lists and a dedicated page for each service at the top of AI visibility factors.
  • AI tools name fewer businesses than the map pack: on average 2.5 to 4.1 per answer.
  • A business that appeared once reappeared in only about half of repeat AI searches, so track trends, not single results.

Is AI SEO different from local SEO for a small business?

Mostly no, with a few new tasks on top. The sources AI tools use for local answers are largely the ones local SEO already builds: your Google Business Profile, your website and review sites. BrightLocal found Google Business Profile made up 28.5% of all citations across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode and AI Overviews, and business websites made up 42% 1.

That is good news. If your local SEO is sound, you are part-way there. The new work is narrower: pages for each service, presence on the sites AI tools cite, answer-first writing and a habit of checking what the tools actually say about you.

The rest of this page separates what you already have from what to add, with the data behind each point.

Which one fits you?

Four questions to show where a small local business should start. It is a rough aid based on the data above, not a measured rule.

Fix local SEO first

Claim and complete your profile, build reviews, tidy listings and local pages.

Best when
  • Your Business Profile is unclaimed or thin
  • You have few reviews
  • Your website has no page per service

Add the AI SEO steps

Service pages written answer-first, presence on cited sites and monthly prompt checks.

Best when
  • Your local basics are already solid
  • Customers mention AI tools
  • Rivals appear in AI answers and you do not

How much do AI SEO and local SEO overlap?

A lot. Darren Shaw of Whitespark, the survey's author, says several of the top AI search visibility factors in his 2026 expert survey are citation factors, the same listings and mentions local SEO has long relied on 3. He also suggests that businesses already doing solid SEO may not need to change much for AI visibility 3. The survey covers 47 local search experts scoring 187 factors, so it reflects expert opinion, not a controlled test 3.

BrightLocal's own advice points the same way. It says many local SEO tactics also support AI visibility, such as a claimed Business Profile, consistent name, address and phone details, and reviews on relevant sites 1. It also warns that strong Google Maps performance does not guarantee AI recommendations 1. Overlap is large, not total.

How do local customers use Google and AI today?

Google is still the main starting point. BrightLocal's July 2026 survey of 1,227 US consumers found 52% began their latest local search on Google Search and 75% used more than one channel 5. 23% used AI tools during that search, and 8% chose AI as their first channel 5. Of those 8%, 43% then went back to Google for more information 5.

Adoption is rising quickly in a separate survey. BrightLocal's 2026 review survey of 1,002 US adults found use of ChatGPT and other generative AI tools for local business recommendations rose from 6% to 45% in a year 6. Of those surveyed, 40% trust AI platforms for recommendations and 32% do not 6. The two surveys ask different questions, so they do not conflict: many people try AI, fewer start there.

Both consumer surveys are US only. The sector and citation studies cover the US, UK and Australia. We found no comparable public data for other countries.

Which sites do AI tools cite for local businesses?

Mostly your Google profile, then review sites, and the mix depends on your trade. BrightLocal analysed about 1.97 million citations for 1,355 business locations in the US, UK and Australia. In a different BrightLocal dataset, Google Business Profile took 28.63% of citations and was cited for 94.17% of the businesses 2. Yelp took 9.53% and Facebook 2.23% 2. Tripadvisor took 1.79% overall 2.

The sector table shows why checking your own trade matters. A restaurant should care about Yelp and Tripadvisor far more than a dentist should.

What extra steps does AI SEO add to local SEO?

Five steps, in this order. Start with the ones you can finish in an afternoon.

  • Keep your Business Profile and website facts identical. Google asks you to keep Business Profile information up to date and structured data matching visible page text 7.
  • Make sure AI crawlers can read your site. A site that blocks them cannot be cited. Check with the AI Crawler Checker and see how to allow AI crawlers in robots.txt.
  • Give each service its own page, written answer-first: what it is, what it costs or how pricing works, where you serve and who it suits. Whitespark's experts rank a dedicated page per service second among AI visibility factors 3.
  • Earn presence where AI tools look: expert best-of lists, industry directories and the review sites for your sector. See how to optimise a local business for AI search.
  • Check what the tools say. Run 10 to 20 customer-style prompts monthly and record who is named. See how to build a prompt list.

Do reviews matter more for AI recommendations?

Reviews matter for both, and the rules on getting them are strict. Google says local ranking rests on relevance, distance and prominence, and that prominence partly depends on how many reviews you have 4. Whitespark's experts list authority of the third-party sites where reviews appear among their top five AI visibility factors 3.

Google's Maps policy bars offering incentives such as payment, discounts or free goods in exchange for reviews. It also bars discouraging negative reviews or selectively soliciting positive ones 8. Ask every customer, make it easy and reply to all reviews. Do not gate them.

Why do AI recommendations change from run to run?

Because the tools do not return a fixed list. BrightLocal measured the overlap between repeat result sets at 23% for ChatGPT, 21% for AI Mode and 33% for AI Overviews 1. A business that appeared once reappeared in about 50% of later attempts for ChatGPT and AI Mode, and about 58% for AI Overviews 1.

So one lucky or unlucky screenshot tells you little. Record each prompt several times, on a schedule, and look at the share of runs in which you appear. A rising share over two or three months is a real signal.

What has Chalk Labs done in local search?

Chalk Labs has one published local case: Meru Trophy, a trophy shop in Bengaluru, India. That is one shop in one city, with a programme built around high-intent local searches (see our case studies). The published result is 27,300 Google clicks and 2.3 million impressions in 16 months, with page-one rankings for "trophy shop in bengaluru". We have not published a count of AI citations for it, and we do not guarantee rankings, citations or lead counts.

That case shows that local-intent pages can work in Google. It does not prove how much of that carries to AI answers. Our reading of the data above is that the same pages, written answer-first, give you the best chance at both.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need AI SEO if I already have a Google Business Profile?

The profile is the biggest single source, at 28.5% of local AI citations in BrightLocal's study 1, but not the only one. Business websites made up 42% 1. Keep the profile strong, then make sure your website and key listings say the same things clearly.

Does ranking in the map pack mean ChatGPT will recommend me?

No. BrightLocal found Google Maps mentioned a tracked business in 66% of searches against 32% to 38% for the AI surfaces, and it warns that strong Maps performance does not guarantee AI recommendations 1. The overlap is large but not complete.

Which review sites matter for AI visibility?

It depends on your trade. BrightLocal's sector data shows Yelp at 21.8% of restaurant citations and 7.9% for lawyers, and Tripadvisor at 7% for restaurants 2. Check which sites AI tools cite for your own prompts before investing in any one platform.

Can I pay for better placement in AI local answers?

Not for Google's local ranking. Its help says there is no way to request or pay for a better local ranking 4. For AI tools, we found no public, reliable way to buy a recommendation. Treat claims otherwise with caution.
