AI SEO in New Zealand: How to Get Recommended by ChatGPT and Google AI
To get recommended by ChatGPT and Google AI search in New Zealand, let both read your site, then publish specific local answers: a small market may mean fewer rivals on a topic, but check this for your own prompts. Allow OpenAI's OAI-SearchBot, claim your Google Business Profile, show your NZ company details and NZD prices, and decide early whether your buyers are only in New Zealand or also in Australia.
- Google sent 89.02% of New Zealand search referrals in September 2026, and Bing 7.71%.
- New Zealand has about 5.06 million internet users, so search data is thin; judge progress by a fixed prompt list.
- Australia took 12.6% of New Zealand's exports and supplied 10.8% of its imports in 2022/23, so trans-Tasman buyers matter.
- The Privacy Act 2020 has 13 principles plus a new IPP3A that took effect on 1 May 2026.
- Chalk Labs has no published New Zealand results. Its only regional proof is Meru Trophy in Bengaluru, India.
How do New Zealanders find businesses with search and AI?
New Zealanders mostly use Google, with Bing second. Statcounter recorded Google at 89.02% of New Zealand search referrals in September 2026, Bing at 7.71%, Yahoo at 1.24% and DuckDuckGo at 1.14% 1. These are referral clicks, not searches, and they exclude AI assistants 1.
DataReportal counted 5.06 million internet users in October 2025, 96.2% of the population, and 4.24 million social media user identities 2. Identities may not be unique people 2. The page has no statistics on AI-tool use.
No New Zealand survey we could open says how many people ask ChatGPT or Google AI Mode to name a local provider, so ask anyone quoting a figure for their source.

Google lists New Zealand for AI Overviews 3. We found no reliable New Zealand figure for how many people ask AI assistants to name local providers, and DataReportal's page has no AI-tool statistics 2.
What do Google AI search and ChatGPT need from a New Zealand site?
Start with access: a host or plug-in setting can block AI bots without you knowing. Google lists New Zealand among the places where AI Overviews are available 3. Google says there are no extra requirements or special optimisations for AI Overviews or AI Mode, and a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet 4.
For ChatGPT, OpenAI says OAI-SearchBot places sites in search results. Allow it in robots.txt and allow about 24 hours for the change 5. A site can block GPTBot, which gathers training content, and still allow search 5.
Run the AI Crawler Checker on your domain. If a host or plug-in blocks bots, allowing AI crawlers in robots.txt shows the fix.
Does a small market make AI SEO easier or harder?
It may be easier on some topics, but we have no data on New Zealand competition. Test your own 20 to 30 prompts and count who is named. About 5 million people are online 2, so audiences per topic can be small, and that makes results harder to measure.
The catch is data. Small audiences mean small query counts, so tracking tools show thin numbers. Judge progress by whether you are named in a fixed list of 20 to 30 prompts, not by traffic charts. Our AI Prompt List Builder makes that list.
Being specific helps in any market. Name your suburb, region and the people you serve. Auckland produced about 37.5% of national GDP in the year to March 2025 6, so expect more rivals there, and test prompts for other regions the same way.
Should you write for Australian buyers too?
Write for Australia only if you can serve it, but know it is the nearest big market. Wikipedia reports that Australia took 12.6% of New Zealand's exports and supplied 10.8% of its imports in 2022/23, and that a 1983 agreement keeps the two economies closely aligned 6.
If you do serve Australians, publish separate pages with AUD prices and Australian service areas, and tag them en-AU. Google says hreflang tags must point both ways between versions or they are ignored 7. Our Australia guide covers the other side.
If you do not serve Australia, say so on the page, for example 'we install in the Waikato, Bay of Plenty and Auckland'. Clear limits help AI engines avoid recommending you for places you cannot reach.

- <link rel="alternate" hreflang="en-AU" href="https://yourdomain.com.au/solar-installation/" />
- <link rel="alternate" hreflang="x-default" href="https://yourdomain.co.nz/solar-installation/" />
Do you need te reo Maori on your site?
Not as a search tactic, but it can signal care. Wikipedia reports that te reo Maori is one of New Zealand's three official languages, and that speakers made up 4.3% of the population in the 2023 census 8. The same page gives two different speaker counts for 2023, so we do not quote a number 8.
Google's AI Overviews language list includes Maori among its languages 3, but that list covers all countries, so it does not prove an AI Overview appears in Maori for New Zealand users. We found no study of Maori-language AI prompts.
Use correct macrons and place names, such as Tāmaki Makaurau for Auckland, where your brand or audience calls for them. If you add Maori pages, use a fluent reviewer and keep one language per page, as Google recommends 9.
Which domains and directories matter in New Zealand?
A .nz domain is the clear local choice, and Trade Me is the best-known local marketplace. Wikipedia reports that InternetNZ runs .nz and that co.nz is for commercial organisations 10. Google says country-code domains are a strong signal that a site targets a country 9.
Trade Me is a large New Zealand online marketplace and classifieds site, with sections for motors, property and jobs 11.
Claim Google Business Profile as well. Google's help page names relevance, distance and prominence as local ranking factors and says paying does not improve rank 12. Keep your company name, NZBN and phone number identical everywhere.
Which New Zealand privacy and trading rules apply to your pages?
Two laws matter most: the Privacy Act 2020 and the Fair Trading Act. The Privacy Commissioner says the Privacy Act came into force on 1 December 2020, with 13 information privacy principles, and a new IPP3A that took effect on 1 May 2026 13. The page does not say whether the Act reaches overseas businesses, so ask a lawyer if you sell from abroad.
The government consumer-protection site says the Fair Trading Act bans misleading conduct, even if unintended, and requires reasonable evidence for a claim when you make it. The Commerce Commission enforces it 14. The page lists no fines, so we state none.
In practice, back every price, saving and result claim with evidence, and keep reviews honest. This is not legal advice, so check with a New Zealand adviser.
What has Chalk Labs actually done in New Zealand?
Chalk Labs has not published New Zealand results. Its published search results are Meru Trophy, a local trophy shop in Bengaluru that reached 27,300 Google clicks and 2.3 million impressions in 16 months, and the personal-brand site shilikajain.com 15.
The method we would bring is query research, answer pages, technical readiness and measurement. A small market adds its own limit, mainly thin data. We do not guarantee rankings or citations in any market.
Where should a New Zealand business start?
Start with access, then three specific pages, then a fixed prompt list. First, check that OAI-SearchBot and Google can read your site. Second, publish a service page, a pricing page and a local-area page, each opening with a direct answer. Third, record who is named for 20 to 30 prompts each month.

What works in New Zealand
- Use a .nz or .co.nz domain and show your NZ company details and NZBN 910.
- Name your suburb, region and service area, and say plainly where you do not work.
- Track a fixed list of 20 to 30 prompts monthly, because small-market traffic data is thin 2.
- If you serve Australia, publish separate en-AU pages with AUD prices and hreflang tags 7.
- List relevant products or services on Trade Me where it fits your trade 11.
Mistakes to avoid
- Copying Australian or US pages and leaving the wrong currency, spelling or service areas.
- Judging success by traffic charts alone when the audience is small.
- Using Māori words or macrons incorrectly. Ask a fluent reviewer.
- Making savings or performance claims you cannot back up 14.
Frequently asked questions
Is AI SEO worth it in a market as small as New Zealand?
It can be, but we have no data on New Zealand competition, so test your own prompts to see who is named. The trade-off is thin data. With about 5.06 million internet users 2, judge progress by whether you are named in a fixed list of prompts, not by traffic alone.
Does Google show AI Overviews in New Zealand?
Should I use a .nz domain or a .com?
What does the NZ Privacy Act change for my website?
The Privacy Act 2020 governs how organisations collect, store, use and share personal information, through information privacy principles, including IPP3A from 1 May 2026 13. Publish a privacy page and collect only what you need. Ask a New Zealand adviser about your own case.
