AI SEO in France: How to Get Recommended by ChatGPT and Google AI Search
To be recommended by ChatGPT and Google AI search in France, publish clear answer pages in native French, make them crawlable, and earn mentions in French media and directories. Google needs no special AI markup, only indexed, snippet-eligible pages 8. The Toubon law and CNIL cookie rules shape the French-market details 45.
- Write in real French, not translated English. French buyers ask French questions, and the Toubon law expects French for consumer-facing offers.
- Google still takes about 88% of French search referrals, so classic search work feeds Google's AI answers too.
- French generative AI use is above the EU average, with work use at 18.44% of people in 2025.
- Local press, directories and sector sites are the third-party proof AI assistants lean on.
- Cookie consent and French-language rules are the two compliance points to check first.
How do people in France search and use AI?
Most French searches still happen on Google, and a growing share of adults also use generative AI tools. Statcounter recorded Google at 88.16% of search-engine referrals in France in September 2026, with Bing at 5.47% and the French engine Qwant at 0.86% 1. That figure counts referrals to sites, not questions asked, and it leaves out AI assistants.
Eurostat's 2025 survey found that 37.46% of people in France aged 16 to 74 had used generative AI tools in the previous three months 2. The EU average was 32.66% in the same survey 2. So French adults use these tools more than the EU typical, though less than the leaders: Denmark was highest at 48.4% 3.
Work use matters for business buyers. The same dataset puts work use of generative AI in France at 18.44%, against 15.36% for the EU as a whole 2. A buyer researching a supplier at their desk is therefore fairly likely to ask an assistant first.

Does the Toubon law affect your website and AI visibility?
Yes, in practice it means your offers should exist in French. The Toubon law, passed on 4 August 1994, requires commercial advertising to be in French, and a foreign-language ad needs a French translation 4. Packaging, manuals and some workplace documents also fall under French-language rules 4.
Wikipedia's summary notes that the law does not describe a general website rule, and that one early dispute over an English-only school site was dismissed on a technicality 4. Treat that as a grey area, not a safe harbour. If you sell to French consumers, a French site is the cautious choice and also the better search choice.
The language point is also an AI point. A French buyer asks in French, so an assistant searches for French pages first. An English-only page may still be used, but it competes against local pages that match the wording exactly.
If you keep English and French versions, give each its own URL and link them with hreflang tags, the markup that tells search engines which page serves which language. Google says each version must list itself and the others, and pages must link back to each other or the tags are ignored 9. Translate the body text, not only the menus. Google treats localised pages as duplicates only when the main content stays untranslated 9.
Which platforms, media and directories matter in France?
Beyond Google, AI assistants lean on pages that other trusted sites mention. In France that means national and regional press, sector directories and review sites, not only your own pages.
The press map is unusual. According to Wikipedia, citing 2020 circulation figures, Ouest-France is the largest regional daily at 625,896 copies, ahead of Le Monde (393,109) and Le Figaro (331,927) 7. Other regional dailies such as Sud Ouest (211,197) and La Voix du Nord (196,531) are smaller than the big nationals, so only Ouest-France out-sells them 7. These numbers are old and print-only, so they are not audience data.
A mention in a regional daily in your own area can reach local buyers that a national title does not, but the figures here do not prove it is worth as much. Check each title's website for how it credits sources before you pitch.
- Google Business Profile for local firms, with French category names and French opening hours.
- PagesJaunes and sector directories relevant to your trade, with your name, address and phone number matching your site exactly.
- Specialist platforms by sector: for example booking sites for health, trades and tourism. Pick the two your buyers actually use.
- Qwant and Bing matter little for volume. A Bing Webmaster setup takes minutes, so do it after the basics.
What privacy and advertising rules apply in France?
The main rule is the GDPR, enforced in France by the CNIL, the national data protection authority. The European Commission says the GDPR covers organisations established in the EU and also those outside it that offer goods or services to people in the EU 10. A non-EU firm that does not target EU residents is outside it 10.
The CNIL says it supports businesses with guidance and a GDPR toolkit, investigates complaints and can issue sanctions 6. For website owners, cookies are the daily issue. In its July 2019 guidelines the CNIL said that scrolling or swiping cannot count as consent, that you must be able to prove consent, and that users must still reach the service if they refuse 5.
Those guidelines are from 2019 and the CNIL has published further recommendations since, so check its current cookie page before you build your banner. This guide is not legal advice.
What should you publish first for French buyers?
Publish a short French answer page for each question a buyer asks before they contact you. Lead with the answer in the first two sentences, then give detail. Pages like this are easy for assistants to quote.
Start with five pages: what you do and who it is for, your prices or price ranges in euros, your coverage area by city or département, a comparison with the usual alternatives, and a page on how to choose a supplier in your trade.
Write the way people ask. We have not measured French prompt style; test the prompts below in the tools you care about, then make sure each has a page that answers it.
- Quel est le meilleur plombier à Lyon pour une urgence ? (best plumber in Lyon for an emergency)
- Combien coûte un site e-commerce en France ? (how much does an online shop cost)
- Comment choisir une agence SEO à Bordeaux ? (how to choose an SEO agency)
- Quelle est la différence entre un expert-comptable et un comptable ? (difference between two accounting roles)
- Avis sur [nom de votre entreprise] (reviews of your firm: always test your own brand)
How does France differ from the US or global playbook?
The method is the same, but four inputs change: the language, the media, the consent rules and the buyer. The table compares them with a typical English-language US approach.
| Topic | Typical US plan | France |
|---|---|---|
| Content language | English | Native French, with English as a second version if needed 4 |
| Press targets | National tech and business outlets | Regional dailies matter for local firms; Ouest-France is the biggest daily 7 |
| Cookie consent | Opt-out is common | Prior consent, proof of consent, no scroll-as-consent 5 |
| Search engines | Google plus Bing | Google, then Bing and a small Qwant share 1 |
| Generative AI use | Varies by survey | 37.46% of adults in 2025, above the EU average 2 |
| Local proof | Google reviews and city lists | Add regional press and PagesJaunes-style directories |
Where should you start this month?
Start with access, then wording, then proof. Check that your key pages load without JavaScript and are not blocked, using the AI Crawler Checker. Then rewrite your five most important pages in French answer-first style.
For proof, pick two French media or directory targets and pitch one useful fact each. Our guides on optimising a local business for AI search and getting recommended by ChatGPT give the step lists.
On honesty: Chalk Labs has no French results. We have not tested French query wording or French-media pitching ourselves; only the method of query research, answer pages and measurement carries over. Compare the setup with our Germany and UK guides to see what is shared.
Rules and platforms that shape results
Rules to know
- Toubon law (1994). Commercial advertising must be in French; foreign-language ads need a French translation. Packaging and some manuals are covered too.4
- CNIL cookie guidelines (2019). Scrolling is not consent, consent must be provable, and users who refuse must still reach the service. These are the July 2019 guidelines; CNIL later published further recommendations, so use its current cookie page for banner design.5
- GDPR. Applies to organisations in the EU and to those outside it that offer goods or services to people in the EU.10
Platforms that matter here
- Google Search, AI Overviews and AI Mode
- ChatGPT and other assistants
- Bing and Microsoft Copilot
- Google Business Profile
- PagesJaunes and sector directories
- Regional and national press sites
What works in France
- Publish French answer pages with euro prices and French place names, written by a native speaker.
- Pitch one useful fact to a regional daily in your area before chasing national press.
- Keep your name, address and phone number identical across your site, Google Business Profile and PagesJaunes.
- Use hreflang if you run French and English versions, and translate the body text, not just the menu.
- Add a consent banner that blocks non-essential cookies until the visitor accepts.
Mistakes to avoid
- Machine-translated pages that read as stiff French and lose to native pages.
- A cookie banner that treats scrolling as consent.
- Targeting only Paris when your buyers ask about Lyon, Toulouse or Nantes.
- Relying on 2020 print circulation as if it were web audience.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a French website to be recommended by ChatGPT in France?
Not strictly, but it helps a lot. French buyers ask in French, so assistants search for French pages first. The Toubon law also expects French in consumer advertising 4. An English-only site competes against native pages with the exact wording buyers use.
Does Google need special markup for AI Overviews in France?
No. Google says there are no extra requirements for AI Overviews or AI Mode beyond being indexed and eligible to show with a snippet 8. Structured data should simply match the visible text. Good basic search work is the whole job.
Which French rules affect my site most?
Cookie consent under the GDPR, enforced by the CNIL, and French-language rules for consumer offers. The CNIL's 2019 guidelines say scrolling is not consent and users who refuse must still get access 5. Check current CNIL guidance and take legal advice.
Is Bing worth optimising for in France?
A little. Bing had 5.47% of search referrals in September 2026 1. That is small, but the setup work is light. Do it after your French pages and Google basics are in place.
Can Chalk Labs show French results?
No. We have no French results, so we show none. We can apply the same method here, but we would not claim a French track record.
