Otterly.AI Alternatives for Tracking Brand Mentions in AI Answers

The short answer

Alternatives to Otterly.AI for tracking brand mentions in AI answers include Ahrefs Brand Radar, Semrush, Peec AI, AthenaHQ, Scrunch and Profound, plus free Bing and Clarity reports. Check first whether a tool counts mentions, meaning your name in the answer text, or only citations, meaning links to your pages 2. We have tested none of them.

  • A mention is your name in the answer text. A citation is a link to your pages. Many reports count only one 2.
  • Otterly includes four engines in every plan, and sells Claude, AI Mode and Gemini as add-ons 1.
  • Covering all seven engines on Otterly Standard comes to $416 a month by our arithmetic from its listed prices 1.
  • Free Bing and Clarity reports count citations of your pages, not mentions in text 910.

What are the best Otterly.AI alternatives for tracking brand mentions?

There is no single best one. For a suite you may already own, look at Ahrefs Brand Radar or Semrush. For other dedicated trackers, look at Peec AI, AthenaHQ, Scrunch or Profound. For no cost, use Bing Webmaster Tools, Microsoft Clarity and a hand-kept log. The right pick depends on engines, prompt count and whether you need mentions or citations.

Disclosure: Chalk Labs sells AI SEO audits and page production, not a tracker, so we gain if readers hire help. We read the vendor pages on 20 October 2026 and ran no hands-on test, so we rank no tool and judge no tool's accuracy.

What is a brand mention, and how is it different from a citation?

A mention is your brand name appearing in the text of an AI answer. A citation is the answer linking to your pages as a source. Ahrefs defines them this way on its Brand Radar page, and it measures both 2.

The difference matters because the two can move apart. A model can name you without linking, or link to your page without naming you. In an August 2025 Ahrefs study of 15,000 long-tail prompts, about 12% of cited URLs ranked in Google's top 10 on average (Perplexity was higher) 11. So rankings do not predict either number.

Ask every vendor which one it reports. Microsoft's free tools are clear about it: Bing's AI Performance report counts how often your content is shown as a source, and Clarity's Citation dashboard tracks citation activity 910.

What does Otterly.AI include?

Otterly lists Lite at $29 a month for 15 prompts, Standard at $189 for 100 and Premium at $489 for 400 1. The page shows a second, lower price set that is probably annual billing, but it does not label which is which 1. Every plan covers ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot 1.

Claude, Google AI Mode and Gemini are paid add-ons, and the page says Standard can add up to 300 extra prompts, after which you move to Premium 1. It offers a free trial of unstated length and says subscriptions are monthly with cancellation any time 1.

What does it cost to cover every engine on Otterly?

More than the headline price. The table adds each plan's listed add-ons for Claude, AI Mode and Gemini to its base price. It uses the first price set, which we assume is monthly, and it is our arithmetic, not an Otterly quote 1.

Otterly.AI plan plus all three engine add-ons (monthly list prices, read 20 October 2026)
PlanBase priceAI Mode + Gemini + Claude add-onsTotal a month
Lite (15 prompts)$29 1$9 + $9 + $29 1$76
Standard (100 prompts)$189 1$59 + $59 + $109 1$416
Premium (400 prompts)$489 1$149 + $149 + $439 1$1,226

How do the alternatives handle mentions and citations?

The table records only what each vendor's own page says, plus its public price. Where a page does not say whether it counts mentions or citations, we say so rather than guess.

Why do two tools report different mention counts?

Because AI answers differ by engine, by run and by user. Yext compared four AI engines on 491,972 local cases between February and August 2026. All four named the same top business in 4% of cases and four different ones in 48% 12.

So a gap between Otterly and a rival is not proof that one is wrong. It may mean they ran different prompts, different engines or different locations. Keep one fixed prompt list and compare tools on it, not on their default dashboards.

How can you check a tool's mention numbers yourself?

Spot-check ten prompts by hand. Ask each prompt in the engine itself, then compare what you see with the tool's record for that day. It takes about half an hour and tells you whether to trust the dashboard.

Mention check log (one row per prompt and engine)
  • Prompt: best accounting software for freelancers in Canada
  • Engine: ChatGPT Date: 2026-10-20 Location: Toronto
  • Brand named in text? yes / no Position in list: ___
  • Page linked? yes / no Which URL: ___
  • Competitors named: ___, ___, ___
  • Tool's record for same prompt and day: named yes / no, linked yes / no
  • Match? yes / no Note why not: ___

Which alternative fits which team?

Pick by situation, then trial two. If you already pay for a suite, price the add-on first: Ahrefs lists a Brand Radar add-on from $199 a month 3, and Semrush lists its toolkit at $99 a month for 25 prompts 6. If you want many engines in one price, AthenaHQ lists 11 on Starter 7.

If you serve several users or client brands, Scrunch lists three user licences on Starter and five on Growth 8. If you need security reviews, API and exports, Profound's Enterprise plan lists them 5. If you only need to see whether you appear at all, start with the spreadsheet route and the free reports in Search Console vs AI visibility tools.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a mention and a citation?

A mention is your brand name in the text of an AI answer. A citation is a link to your pages as a source. Ahrefs defines and measures both 2. A good report separates them, because one can rise while the other falls.

Is Otterly.AI the cheapest AI visibility tracker?

It lists the lowest paid starting price in this group, $29 a month for 15 prompts 1; AthenaHQ also lists a free Essential tier 7. Total cost rises once you add Claude, AI Mode and Gemini, which are paid add-ons 1. Compare the total at your own prompt and engine count.

Can I track brand mentions in AI answers for free?

Partly. Bing Webmaster Tools and Microsoft Clarity count citations of your pages in Microsoft's AI surfaces 910. For ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini, ask your key prompts by hand and log the results monthly.

Which tool tracks the most engines?

AthenaHQ lists 11 engines on Starter 7 and Profound lists up to nine on Enterprise 5. Otterly includes four in every plan and sells three as add-ons 1. Coverage is not accuracy, so test with your own prompts.

How often should I check AI mentions?

Monthly is enough for most small teams, with a fixed prompt list. Answers vary by run and by engine, so look at trends over several months, not single days. See how to measure AI share of voice.
