AI SEO vs Traditional SEO: What Is the Difference?

The short answer

AI SEO is traditional SEO plus a new goal. Google says optimizing for its AI features is still SEO and needs no special files or markup 1. What changes is the prize: being the passage an AI assistant quotes and names, not only a link in a list. Keep the basics, then add answer-first writing, outside mentions and AI-specific measurement.

  • Google says optimizing for generative AI search is still SEO, and its AI features need no extra files or special markup.
  • What is new: the unit is often a passage, not a page, and the prize is being quoted and named, not only ranked.
  • Keep crawlability, useful content and links. Add answer-first writing, outside mentions and a monthly check of AI answers.
  • AI assistants still send little traffic, so do not drop Google: 0.43% of visits in one 115,254-site sample.

Is AI SEO really different from traditional SEO?

Mostly no on the foundations, and partly yes on the goal and the measurement. Google's own guide says optimizing for generative AI search is still SEO, and that the best practices for SEO continue to be relevant 1. Forrester analyst Nikhil Lai calls answer engine optimization 'significantly, but not fundamentally' different from SEO 3.

Here, SEO means search engine optimization: making pages easy to find and worth choosing. AI SEO means the same work, aimed at classic results and at answer engines such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Mode. Our AI SEO explainer covers the term in more depth.

Forrester also warns that point-solution vendors tend to exaggerate the gap to sell new tools 3. So treat any pitch that says traditional SEO is dead with care. Our page on whether SEO is dead looks at the evidence.

Which one fits you?

A rule-of-thumb quiz, not a diagnosis. It tells you where to spend your next hour: on the foundations, on the AI layer, or on both.

Traditional SEO first: fix the foundations

Make sure pages are indexed, fast, linked and useful before you add anything AI-specific.

Best when
  • Key pages are missing from Google or load slowly.
  • You have no Search Console data or no list of money pages.
  • Most of your buyers still use short Google searches.

AI layer first: add answers and mentions

Rewrite openings to give the answer, cover related subtopics, and track what AI tools say about you.

Best when
  • Your pages already rank, but clicks are flat or falling.
  • Buyers ask AI tools which provider to choose.
  • A check of AI answers shows you missing or described wrongly.

How do AI SEO and traditional SEO compare side by side?

The table answers the same question for each approach. Read the right-hand column as what you add, not what you swap in.

Two details sit behind the table. Microsoft's Bing team says assistants do not read a page top to bottom: they split it into pieces, and can lift question-and-answer pairs word for word 12. And each search bot is separate: OpenAI says a site opted out of OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers 7, while Perplexity and Anthropic run bots of their own 89.

What stays the same when you add AI search?

Almost everything that makes a page eligible stays the same. Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet to appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, with no other requirements 2. Microsoft's Bing team makes a similar point for its own engines: crawlability, metadata, internal linking and backlinks remain essential 12.

That is why the first week of an AI SEO plan looks like a normal technical audit. You can run the first check yourself with the free AI crawler checker.

  • A site that Google and Bing can crawl and index.
  • Fast pages that show their text to bots without running scripts. See server-side rendering.
  • Useful, original content. Google says unique, non-commodity content will likely influence presence in generative AI search in the long run more than its other tips 1.
  • Clear titles and internal links between related pages.

How do queries change under AI search?

Queries get longer, and one question can turn into many searches. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode may use query fan-out, which means issuing multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources 2. Anthropic's API documentation says simple factual questions typically use 1 to 3 searches in its web search tool and comparative research 10 or more; this describes the developer tool, not the Claude app 10.

For you, a page can be pulled in for a search the user never typed. A page about the best accounting tool for a small firm may be fetched because the engine also searched for pricing and setup time. Covering the subtopics around a question has become worth more than targeting one exact phrase.

Our query fan-out guide and the free Query Fan-Out Explorer show how to see this for your own prompts.

What happens to clicks and traffic?

Clicks on classic results fall when an AI summary appears, yet AI assistants still send little traffic. In Pew Research Center's March 2025 browsing data from 900 US adults, people clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits with an AI summary and 15% of visits without one 6. Clicks on links inside the summary were about 1% of visits 6.

Ahrefs' September 2026 benchmark of 115,254 sites found AI assistants sent 0.43% of all traffic, while Google sent 23.96% 5. ChatGPT made up most of the AI share at 0.34% 5. Ahrefs notes that its channel groups overlap and that large shares of traffic are labelled direct or unknown, so the true AI-driven share is not known 5.

Read the two numbers together. Pew measures behaviour on Google, and Ahrefs counts visits that arrive. Neither shows how many buyers saw your name in an AI answer and searched for you later. That gap is why AI SEO adds mention tracking to click tracking.

0.43%of website traffic came from AI assistants in September 2026, across 115,254 sites in the Ahrefs benchmark5

Which new tasks does AI SEO add?

AI SEO adds four jobs to a normal SEO plan: answer-first writing, bot access, outside mentions and prompt tracking.

The 2024 GEO paper reported visibility gains of up to 40% in a simulated engine when content added statistics, quotations and cited sources, and keyword stuffing did not help 11. The engine was simulated (five Google results fed to GPT-3.5), so treat it as a hint to test, not a rule 11.

  • Answer-first writing. Open each section with the answer, because assistants can lift question-and-answer pairs word for word 12. See how to write answer-first introductions.
  • Bot access. Check that robots.txt does not block search bots by accident. OpenAI, Perplexity and Anthropic each let you manage search and training bots separately 789. See how to allow AI crawlers.
  • Outside mentions. In an Ahrefs study of 75,000 brands, branded web mentions had the strongest link to AI Overview brand visibility at 0.664 on a scale where 1 is a perfect match, ahead of backlinks at 0.218 4. This is correlation, not proof, and only domains with a Domain Rating above 40 were included 4.
  • Prompt tracking. Check a fixed list of prompts each month and record who is named. See how to build a prompt list.

What does one page look like before and after the AI layer?

Take a page that answers the question 'how much does a website audit cost?'. The topic stays the same. Only the order and the proof change.

The first version makes an assistant hunt for an answer. The second gives it a quotable sentence, a source and a reason to trust it. Nothing in the second version helps only AI, and a human skimming the page gains too. That is a good test for any AI-specific change.

Illustrative rewrite of the opening lines (replace the brackets with your own facts)
  • BEFORE: Pricing is one of the most common questions we get. Every business is different, so the best first step is to get in touch.
  • AFTER: A website audit from [Company] costs [price range] and takes [number] working days. The price depends on page count, tools used and whether we also deliver a fix list.
  • AFTER, line two: We set this range from [number] audits completed since [year]; examples are on our case studies page.
  • ADDED: A table of three audit sizes, a named author with a short bio, and a visible 'last updated' date.

When should you lean on traditional SEO, and when on AI-specific work?

Lean on traditional SEO when your basics are broken, and on the AI layer when they are sound. Use these rules as a starting point, not a verdict.

For a busy owner, the cheapest order is: fix access, rewrite your five money pages, then start tracking. Our 30-day AI SEO sprint lays that order out week by week.

  • Traditional first if key pages are not indexed, the site is slow or blocks bots, or you have no Search Console data yet.
  • AI layer first if your pages rank but clicks are flat, buyers in your market ask AI tools for recommendations, or a check of AI answers shows wrong or missing facts about you.
  • Both at once if you have a short list of money pages and a small team: fix access and rewrite openings in the same sprint.

How do you combine both in one plan?

Run one plan with three layers, then measure all three. Layer one is access: pages that are indexed and reachable by the bots that matter. Layer two is answers: openings that state the answer and cover the subtopics around it. Layer three is authority: original facts, named authors and accurate mentions on other sites.

For measurement, Google counts traffic from its AI features inside the Web search type in Search Console 2. Add a monthly prompt list for AI answers, and ask new enquiries how they found you. Our guide to self-reported attribution shows the question to use.

Be patient and honest about timing. Google says some site changes take effect within hours while others take several months 13. No one can promise a ranking or a citation, because search engines and AI models are third parties.

Frequently asked questions

Does AI SEO replace traditional SEO?

No. Google says optimizing for generative AI search is still SEO 1, so keep your SEO work and add the AI layer on top.

Do I need llms.txt or special schema for AI search?

Google says you do not need new machine-readable files, AI text files or special markup to appear in its AI features 1. Structured data still helps with rich results. Test any file you add, and read our llms.txt explainer before you spend time on it.

Will AI search cut my traffic?

It can reduce clicks on classic results; see the Pew figures above 6, and check your own Search Console trends before assuming a number.

How much of my traffic comes from ChatGPT today?

For most sites, a small share (0.43% across 115,254 sites in one Ahrefs sample 5); our GA4 tracking guide shows how to check yours.

What should I do first if I have one afternoon?

Confirm your key pages are indexed and that search bots can reach them. Then rewrite the opening of your five most important pages so each gives the answer first. Last, write 20 prompts your buyers might ask and check them once a month. This order fixes access before style, and measurement before spend.
