AI SEO in Nigeria: How to Get Recommended by ChatGPT and Google AI Search
A business in Nigeria gets recommended by ChatGPT and Google AI search by publishing fast, light, English answer pages that name the city, the price in naira and the proof, and by keeping details consistent across Google and directories. Google needs no special AI markup 9. Nigeria's 2023 data law applies to lead forms 4.
- Google took 98.28% of search referrals in September 2026, the highest of the African markets we checked, so classic Google basics come first.
- About 109 million Nigerians were online in late 2025, but that is only 45.5% of the population.
- Generative AI use among working-age Nigerians was 10.4% in June 2026, below the 18.8% world figure.
- English dominates business and government, while Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo and Pidgin change how people phrase questions.
- The Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 can reach foreign firms that target people in Nigeria.
How big is the Nigerian online audience?
It is the largest in Africa among the markets we checked, but it is still a minority of the population. DataReportal counted 109 million internet users in Nigeria in October 2025, a penetration of 45.5% 2. The country had 239 million people, a median age of 18.1, and 55.9% of residents lived in cities 2.
Social media user identities stood at 47.8 million, or 20.0% of the population, and they may not equal unique people 2. Mobile connections reached 165 million, though some are voice and text only 2.
The practical reading is that your online buyers are young, urban and on phones. A cheap marketing site built for a desktop in a fast office will fail them.

Microsoft estimates that 10.4% of working-age Nigerians used a generative AI product in June 2026, below the 18.8% world figure 3. We found no verified figure for ChatGPT or Google AI Mode use by Nigerian buyers.
How many Nigerians use AI assistants?
A small but growing share. Microsoft's AI Economy Institute put Nigeria at 10.4% of the working-age population using a generative AI product in June 2026, up from 10.1% in the first quarter, against 18.8% worldwide 3.
That figure covers any generative AI product among people aged 15 to 64, built from Microsoft telemetry and adjusted for device mix 3. It does not measure ChatGPT alone, and it does not show how many people ask for a local provider.
So AI answers are not yet your main channel in Nigeria. Google is. Statcounter recorded Google at 98.28% of search referrals in September 2026 and Bing at only 1.41% 1. Build for Google search and its AI features first, then treat assistant visibility as a growing second layer.
Is a mobile-first site enough when data is costly?
Mobile-first is the minimum; light is the goal. Wikipedia reports that most Nigerian internet users reach the web by phone, with mobile accounting for over 84% of the penetration rate, though it gives no date for that figure 6. The same article says only 12% of Nigerians had adequate access as of May 2022, citing affordability, availability and service quality 6. That is an old, secondary figure, and its own source headline implies a different share, so use it as a direction rather than a measurement.
We found no current verified data price to quote. What follows from the direction is a design rule: every kilobyte you ask a buyer to download is a cost to them. Compress images, skip autoplay video, and put the answer and phone number above the fold as text.
Light pages also help crawlers. The speed guide for AI crawlers explains how slow or heavy pages can be skipped.
- Answer and price in naira visible without scrolling or tapping
- Click-to-call and click-to-WhatsApp buttons as real text links
- Images resized to display size, no autoplay video
- Address with area name, for example Ikeja or Lekki, as plain text
- No pop-up before the first sentence
Which languages should you write in?
Write in English first. Wikipedia says English is the official language and remains dominant in government, business and education, with French as a second official language since December 1996 5. Over 520 native languages are spoken in the country 5.
Three native languages carry the most speakers: Hausa with over 63 million including second-language speakers, Yoruba with over 47 million and Igbo with over 33 million 5. Nigerian Pidgin, an English-based creole, is widely used in media, but the article's own figures conflict: over 60 million speakers in the text, 80.2 million in a table 5. We therefore give no single Pidgin number.
Here is the rule we would apply. Keep the core service pages in clear English, because that is what buyers type to Google and to assistants for business questions. Add a short Pidgin or Yoruba explainer only where your customers already use it in sales chats. Keep each page in one language on its own URL and link the versions, as Google advises 10.
Where does Lagos fit in your plan?
Lagos is the first city to target because it is where much of the commerce is. Wikipedia gives an unsourced estimate that Lagos generates 30 to 35% of Nigeria's GDP, says it hosts the Nigerian Exchange Group, and describes Victoria Island as home to many banking headquarters 7. It describes areas such as Ikeja, Victoria Island, Lekki, Surulere and Ikoyi, each with a distinct character 7.
That gives you a way to write unique local pages. A page for a Lekki dentist should name Lekki roads, landmarks and parking, not copy a page for Ikeja. The local business guide shows what to put on each.
Do not publish a page for every Nigerian city on day one. Start with the places where you have a real address, staff or customers, then expand to Abuja, Port Harcourt or Ibadan when you can say something true about each.
What does the Nigeria Data Protection Act require?
It requires lawful, transparent handling of personal data, and it can apply to you even from abroad. The Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 received assent on 13 June 2023, and the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) enforces it 4. A 2025 directive clarifies that foreign organisations that target data subjects in Nigeria count as operating there 4.
Consent must be requested specifically and separately where the law requires it, and people can withdraw it at any time 4. Maximum fines for a controller of major importance are the greater of 10 million naira or 2% of prior-year gross revenue 4.
Registration depends on how many people's data you handle. The table below summarises the tiers DLA Piper reports. This is a secondary summary, not legal advice, so check the NDPC's own notices. DLA Piper also lists commercial banks, telecoms and fintechs as Ultra-High Level regardless of volume.
| Tier | Data subjects handled in six months | Fee | Annual compliance return |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ordinary High Level | Over 200 to under 1,000 | NGN 10,000, renewed yearly | Not required |
| Extra-High Level | 1,000 to under 5,000 | NGN 100,000, registered once | Due 31 March |
| Ultra-High Level | Over 5,000 | NGN 250,000, registered once | Due 31 March |
What consumer and advertising rules apply?
Pricing honesty is under active scrutiny. The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission cites the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act, 2018, runs a survey on gaps between displayed prices and checkout charges, and lists draft Sales Promotion (Amended) Regulations 2026 8.
We could not source Nigeria's advertising-practice rules, because the regulator's site would not load for us. For fintech, health and other regulated claims, ask a Nigerian lawyer before you publish promises, rates or testimonials.
A safe habit helps everywhere: show the full price, including fees, on the page that an assistant is likely to quote.
How do you start this month?
Pick one city and one service, then write ten pages that each answer one buyer question. Use the questions your sales team already hears on calls and WhatsApp, as the question research guide describes.
Check each page on a mid-range phone over mobile data, and give each Lagos area you serve, such as Ikeja or Lekki, its own page. Then track a fixed list of prompts monthly with the prompt list builder. Expect Google results to move before assistants do.

Rules and platforms that shape results
Rules to know
- Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023. Assent 13 June 2023; enforced by the NDPC. Specific, separate consent where required, fines up to the greater of 10 million naira or 2% of revenue for major-importance controllers, and reach over foreign organisations targeting people in Nigeria.4
- Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act 2018. Enforced by the FCCPC, which is surveying displayed versus checkout prices and consulting on sales promotion rules. We could not source the advertising-practice code.8
Platforms that matter here

What works in Nigeria
- Keep pages light: compress images, avoid autoplay video and show the answer and naira price as text.
- Write the core pages in clear English and add Pidgin or Yoruba explainers only where customers already use them.
- Build unique pages for the areas you actually serve, such as Lekki, Ikeja or Victoria Island, with real landmarks and directions.
- Show the full price including fees, and a click-to-call and WhatsApp link as plain text.
- Add a plain-language data notice and a separate consent tick box to every lead form.
Mistakes to avoid
- Building a heavy, video-led site for buyers who pay for every megabyte.
- Quoting an AI adoption number for Nigeria that no source supports.
- Copying one city page across Lagos, Abuja and Port Harcourt with the name swapped.
- Ignoring NDPC registration thresholds once your lead list grows.
Frequently asked questions
How can a business in Nigeria get recommended by ChatGPT?
Publish clear, light English pages that state the service, price in naira, area and proof, and keep your details identical across Google Business Profile, your site and directories. Nobody controls what an assistant recommends, since these are third-party systems, but verifiable pages give them something to quote.
Is Google or ChatGPT more important in Nigeria?
Do I need to write in Yoruba, Igbo, Hausa or Pidgin?
Does the Nigeria Data Protection Act apply to my website?
If you collect personal data from people in Nigeria, likely yes. The Act received assent on 13 June 2023, and a 2025 directive treats foreign organisations that target data subjects in Nigeria as operating there 4. Confirm your registration tier with a Nigerian lawyer.
