AI SEO in New York City: How a Business Gets Recommended by ChatGPT and Google AI
To get recommended by ChatGPT and Google AI search in New York City, let both read your site, then publish one answer page per service that names the borough, the price range and who you serve. Claim a Google Business Profile for each real location, keep reviews genuine, and write finance or health pages with a named reviewer.
- New York City had 8,804,190 residents in 2020, spread over five boroughs that behave like separate local markets.
- Spanish, Chinese, Russian and Bengali are the largest non-English languages listed, so test prompts in more than one language.
- Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode need no extra markup. A page must be indexed and eligible for a snippet.
- State and federal rules apply to your reviews, claims and customer data. The SHIELD Act covers any business holding New Yorkers' private information.
- Chalk Labs has no published New York results. Its only regional proof is Meru Trophy in Bengaluru, India.
How do New Yorkers find businesses with search and AI?
They use Google first, and a growing minority also ask AI assistants. We found no public study of how many New Yorkers ask an AI assistant to name a local provider, so the best guide is national data. Pew Research surveyed 5,123 US adults in early 2025 and found 34% had ever used ChatGPT, rising to 58% of adults under 30 1.
Pew found 58% of under-30s had used ChatGPT, against 34% of all adults 1, so younger buyers are likelier to ask an assistant. Pew measured whether people had ever used the tool, not how often, and not whether they asked it for local recommendations 1.
Scale also shapes the work. The city counted 8,804,190 residents in the 2020 census 2. Brooklyn alone held 2,736,074 people and Queens 2,405,464, more than most US cities 3.

What do Google AI search and ChatGPT need from a New York site?
They need to be able to read the page, and nothing more exotic than that. Google states there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and no special schema is needed. A page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet 4.
OpenAI says OAI-SearchBot surfaces sites in ChatGPT search, while GPTBot gathers training content, and a site can allow the first and block the second 5.
Some sites use bot protection that can block good crawlers by accident. Run the AI Crawler Checker first, then follow the guide on allowing AI crawlers in robots.txt.
How do boroughs and neighbourhoods change local SEO?
Treat each borough, and often each neighbourhood, as its own market. Google says local results rest on relevance, distance and prominence, and that you cannot pay for a better local rank 6. Distance is the part New York punishes: a searcher in Astoria rarely wants a plumber from Staten Island.
Claim a Google Business Profile for each place where you serve customers face to face. Google's guidelines bar virtual offices and mailboxes at remote locations, and a service-area business should hide its address 7. A rented desk in Midtown does not make you local to Park Slope.
Do not build a page for every neighbourhood by swapping the name. Google's spam policy lists multiple pages aimed at specific cities or regions that funnel users to one page as doorway abuse 8. Build a borough page only when it carries something true of that borough alone, such as a crew base, a landlord rule or a price.
| Borough | Residents | First page to publish |
|---|---|---|
| Brooklyn | 2,736,074 | Service plus the three neighbourhoods you actually visit most |
| Queens | 2,405,464 | Service page with language options listed, since Queens buyers search in many languages |
| Manhattan | 1,694,251 | Service page for office and building managers, with access and insurance details |
| The Bronx | 1,472,654 | Service page with transit access, hours and the Spanish version |
| Staten Island | 495,747 | Service page that states travel time and any drive-in service area |
Which languages change the prompts New Yorkers type?
Spanish matters most, and Chinese, Russian and Bengali follow. Wikipedia lists Spanish as the most spoken language after English, at 22.54% of residents in 2024, Chinese 6.54%, Russian 2.15% and Bengali 1.9% 3. English is listed at 51.72% 3.
These are language shares, not search habits. We found no study of which language New Yorkers use when they ask an AI assistant for a local provider. So test it: run one buyer question in two languages and record who is named.
If a language is a real part of your trade, give it its own page and URL, and link the versions with hreflang. Google says each version must point to the others and to itself, or the tags are ignored 9. Our guide to writing pages for multiple languages covers the details.
How should finance, media and agency firms show up?
B2B firms win on clear expert pages, not neighbourhood pages. Wikipedia describes the city as home to the New York Stock Exchange and Nasdaq, a global centre of media and entertainment, and the United Nations headquarters 2. A buyer in those fields asks for a provider by speciality, not by street.
So publish a page for each speciality, with the people behind it. For an agency that is the service, the typical client size, the process, and a named lead with a short bio. Our guide to building an expert author page shows the layout.
Finance pages need extra care because they affect people's money. Describe what a product does and what it costs, name a qualified reviewer, and show the date you last checked the page. Leave rules of financial promotion to your compliance team; we have not researched them for this page. Our explainer on YMYL content says why AI engines weigh trust more in these fields.
Which New York and federal rules touch your pages?
Four sets of rules reach most small firms: advertising law, review law, data security and sector rules. New York General Business Law section 349 makes unfair, deceptive or abusive acts in business unlawful. The Attorney General can sue. A person injured by a deceptive act can also sue for actual damages or $50, whichever is greater 10.
The FTC's final rule on fake reviews, announced on 14 August 2024, bans fake or AI-generated reviews, paying for reviews with a set sentiment, and suppressing negative reviews through groundless threats 11. AI engines read reviews as proof, so only real customers belong on your pages.
The state's SHIELD Act says any person or business that maintains private information must keep administrative, technical and physical safeguards, such as staff training and vendor contracts 12. The Attorney General's page does not say how it treats firms outside New York, so check that with a lawyer.
Restaurants face a city-specific rule. The health department posts letter grades: A for 0 to 13 points, B for 14 to 27 and C for 28 or more. The grade card must be posted where passers-by can see it 13. Put your current grade on your site and keep it accurate. This is not legal advice.
What should a New York business publish first?
Publish the page that answers the question your best buyers ask before they call, and name the borough. The table is modelled from our method and is not observed data.
| Business type | First page | Must include |
|---|---|---|
| Restaurant or cafe | Best [cuisine] in [neighbourhood] for groups | Menu with prices, current health grade, booking link, allergy notes |
| Immigration or tenant lawyer | How [matter] works in New York | State name, date checked, named lawyer, languages spoken |
| Marketing or PR agency | [Service] for [sector] companies | Process, team, typical timeline, honest limits |
| Dental or medical clinic | What [treatment] costs without insurance | Price, clinician name, date reviewed, languages offered |
| Moving company | Cost of moving in [borough] by apartment size | Price range, building access rules, insurance, crew base |
How does New York differ from the rest of the United States?
It differs in density, language mix and the number of competitors per block. In a dense borough, many practices can sit within a few streets of each other, so reviews, hours and clear prices help decide who is named (modelled, not measured).
The national playbook still applies. Read our United States guide for the federal picture, then use this page for the city layer. If you serve both New York and a second city, compare it with the Chicago page to see how a Midwest B2B market differs.
We found no source that ranks New York against other cities for AI recommendations, so we make no such claim.
Where should a New York business start this month?
Start with access, then one borough-aware page, then measurement. Week one: run the crawler check and fix blocks. Week two: tidy your Google Business Profile and publish one answer page.
Then pick your three busiest boroughs and run ten prompts naming each in ChatGPT and Google AI Mode, recording who is named. The AI Prompt List Builder makes the list, and measuring AI share of voice shows how to track it.
Rules and platforms that shape results
Rules to know
- NY General Business Law section 349. The Attorney General can sue; people injured by deceptive acts can recover actual damages or $50.10
- NY SHIELD Act. Requires administrative, technical and physical safeguards for private information and sets breach-notice duties.12
- FTC rule on fake reviews. Bans fake and AI-generated reviews, sentiment-based incentives and some review suppression.11
- NYC restaurant letter grading. Inspection points convert to A, B or C grades, and the card must be posted where it is visible.13
Platforms that matter here
- Google Business Profile: one profile per real, staffed location 7
- Google AI Overviews and AI Mode: no extra requirements beyond indexing 4
- ChatGPT search, fed by OAI-SearchBot 5
- Review sites your buyers use, such as Yelp for restaurants and services, checked trade by trade
- Your own site, with Spanish and other language versions for services that need them
What works in New York City
- Build borough pages only where you have a crew base, office, price or rule that is true for that borough alone 8.
- Claim one Google Business Profile per staffed location and hide the address if you travel to customers 7.
- Add Spanish, Chinese or other language versions of your top enquiry pages on their own URLs, with reciprocal hreflang 9.
- Put your current restaurant grade, licence numbers and insurance on the page, with the date checked 13.
- Publish a named expert page for each speciality if you sell to finance, media or agency buyers.
Mistakes to avoid
- Publishing dozens of neighbourhood pages that differ only by name 8.
- Using a virtual Midtown address on a Business Profile for a business that works elsewhere 7.
- Buying reviews or offering rewards for five-star ratings 11.
- Blocking all bots at the firewall because of booking-rush traffic, then wondering why no AI names you 5.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need separate pages for each New York borough?
Only if each page holds something true of that borough alone, such as a crew base, a price or a rule. Google's spam policy treats many city or region pages that funnel users to one page as doorway abuse 8. One strong service page that lists the boroughs you serve is often better.
Does ChatGPT use Google Business Profile data for local answers?
Are fake reviews illegal in New York?
Does the SHIELD Act apply to a small business?
The Attorney General's page says it applies to any person or business that maintains private information, and it names no small-business exemption 12. It does not address out-of-state firms. Ask a New York lawyer about your case.
How long until a New York business appears in AI answers?
No reliable New York timeline exists. Chalk Labs has not published any New York results; its own search-led result, Meru Trophy in Bengaluru, took 16 months to reach 27,300 Google clicks 14. New York has far more competition, so nobody can promise a date.
