AI SEO in Mexico: How to Get Recommended by ChatGPT and Google AI Search
A business in Mexico gets recommended by ChatGPT and Google AI search by publishing clear answer pages in Mexican Spanish, with prices in pesos, a real address and proof a buyer can check. Google needs no special AI markup, only indexed pages that can show a snippet 7. Mexico also has a new privacy law that governs lead forms 4.
- Write for Mexican Spanish speakers. Spanish is spoken by over 99% of Mexicans, so English-only pages miss most local buyers.
- Google held 88.08% of search referrals in September 2026, but Bing held a notable 9.43%.
- About 110 million Mexicans were online in late 2025, so the audience is large even where AI data is thin.
- Generative AI use among working-age Mexicans was 21.4% in June 2026, above the 18.8% world figure.
- A new federal privacy law was enacted on 20 March 2025 and applies to the forms you use to collect leads.
How big is the Mexican online audience?
It is very large and mostly on phones. DataReportal's Digital 2026 report counted 110 million internet users in Mexico in October 2025, which is 83.5% of the population 2. About 21.9 million people were still offline 2.
Social media user identities reached 99.0 million, or 74.9% of the population, though one person can hold several identities 2. The report also counted 145 million cellular connections at the end of 2025, equal to 110% of the population 2. Some of those connections are voice and text only, so do not read the figure as 145 million web users 2.
What this means for you: design every page for a phone first. A buyer who asks an assistant a question on a phone will also open your page on that phone.

Microsoft estimates that 21.4% of working-age Mexicans used a generative AI product in June 2026, against 18.8% worldwide 3. We found no verified Mexico-specific figure for ChatGPT or Google AI Mode.
How many people in Mexico use AI assistants?
About one in five working-age Mexicans used a generative AI product in mid-2026. Microsoft's AI Economy Institute put Mexico at 21.4% in June 2026, up from 20.1% in the first quarter, against 18.8% worldwide 3.
Read that number with care. It counts people aged 15 to 64 who used any generative AI product, drawn from Microsoft telemetry and adjusted for device mix. It is not a count of ChatGPT users, and it does not say how many people ask for business recommendations 3.
We found no verified public figure for how many Mexicans use ChatGPT, Gemini or Google AI Mode to choose a local provider. Treat any such number you see quoted without a source with suspicion. The safe plan is to be findable in both classic Google results and AI answers.
Which Spanish should you write in?
Write in Mexican Spanish, not in Spanish from Spain or neutral textbook Spanish. Mexico has the largest number of Spanish speakers of any country, more than double the next one, and over 99% of residents speak Spanish 5. Your buyers type the words they use every day.
Words differ by country. The Wikipedia article on Mexican Spanish notes that a bus is a camión in Mexico 5. Look up your own category the same way: type your service into Google autocomplete and copy the wording Mexicans actually complete.
More than 90 native languages are also spoken in Mexico, but the same article gives no speaker counts for them 5. For most commercial services, Spanish pages cover the buyers you can reach. Add an indigenous language only if your customers ask for it.
Prices should be in Mexican pesos, written the way locals write them. Google lists local currency, language and local contact details among the signals that show who a site is for 8.

Do Google and Bing both matter in Mexico?
Google matters most, but Bing is not a rounding error. Statcounter recorded Google at 88.08% of search referrals in Mexico in September 2026 and Bing at 9.43% 1. Yahoo came next at 1.78% 1.
Bing's share is far above the 1.41% to 2.59% Statcounter shows for Nigeria, Kenya and Egypt, so a Bing Webmaster Tools account is cheap insurance. Statcounter counts referrals to sites in its network, not questions asked, and it does not count AI assistants 1. Use it as a rough guide to where classic search traffic comes from.
For Google's AI features, the rule is simple. A page must be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet, and Google says there are no extra technical requirements and no special files or markup to add 7. Your job is to be crawlable, clear and trusted.
How do Mercado Libre and marketplaces change the picture?
If you sell products, your marketplace listings are part of your AI footprint. MercadoLibre was founded in 1999, runs marketplaces across 18 countries, and has its own payments arm, Mercado Pago 6. It opened distribution centres in Mexico in 2019 6.
We have no verified data on how often AI assistants cite marketplace pages in Mexico. What we can say is practical: listings are public pages with prices and reviews, so keep titles, specifications and photos consistent with your own site. Mixed facts across pages are a common reason an assistant hedges or picks someone else.
Service firms have the same task with Google Business Profile, trade directories and local news. Make the name, address, phone and opening hours identical everywhere.
What does Mexican privacy law mean for your forms?
Mexico replaced its private-sector privacy law in 2025. DLA Piper reports that a new Federal Law for the Protection of Personal Data in Possession of Private Parties was enacted on 20 March 2025 and that the Ministry of Anticorruption and Good Governance is now the regulator 4.
Three points matter for a marketing site. A privacy notice, the aviso de privacidad, must be given before you process data, and the company must be able to prove it gave one. Consent is implied by default, but sensitive data needs express written consent. The law applies to private parties processing data in Mexico and can reach some foreign controllers 4. DLA Piper notes its page predates the 2025 law and that some detail may still reflect the 2010 framework, so confirm the current text before you rely on it.
This is a summary of a law-firm page, not legal advice. We did not verify Mexican consumer-advertising rules for this page. Ask a Mexican lawyer to review claims, prices and testimonials before you publish them.
What differs from the US playbook?
Most of the method is the same; the inputs change. Query research, answer-first pages and technical readiness work in any market, as the US guide and the Spain guide show. The table lists what shifts for Mexico.
One Mexico-specific angle is cross-border buyers. Wikipedia describes nearshoring as outsourcing to a nearby country that shares time zone and culture, and says the Mexican firm Softtek trademarked the term 'Near Shore' in 1997 9. That page carries a warning about unverified claims, so we use it only for the definition. If you serve US buyers from Mexico, publish an English page and a Spanish page for the same service, each on its own URL, and link them to each other.
| Question | US playbook | Mexico |
|---|---|---|
| Page language | US English | Mexican Spanish, reviewed by a native speaker; add English only for cross-border buyers |
| Currency and units | Dollars | Pesos, with local tax wording |
| Search engines | Google first, Bing second | Google first, Bing worth setting up at 9.43% of referrals 1 |
| Privacy notice | State laws such as California's | Aviso de privacidad under the 2025 federal law 4 |
| Local proof | Yelp and local reviews | Google Business Profile, marketplace listings, trade directories |
| Device | Mixed | Phone first; 110% mobile connections per person 2 |
How do you start this month?
Start with ten Spanish questions from your WhatsApp sales chats, one page for each, plus one English page if you sell nearshoring services to US buyers. Then check how an assistant answers them today. The query fan-out guide explains the searches an assistant runs behind a question, and the Query Fan-Out Explorer lets you try your own.
Then build the pages. Put a two-sentence answer first, then price ranges in pesos, who the service suits, how long it takes, and what you do not do. Add your city, a street address and a contact route. The local business guide covers profiles and reviews in detail, and the prompt list builder turns your categories into a monthly tracking list.
We have not published results in Mexico. The only regional proof Chalk Labs holds is Meru Trophy in Bengaluru, India, so treat this page as a method adapted to Mexican facts, not as a track record. Nobody can promise a recommendation by an assistant, and we do not guarantee one.

What works in Mexico
- Write every page in Mexican Spanish with prices in pesos, and have a native reader check the wording.
- Use your city and neighbourhood names, such as Polanco or Providencia, not just 'Mexico'.
- Set up Bing Webmaster Tools alongside Search Console, since Bing held 9.43% of referrals.
- Keep marketplace listings, Google Business Profile and your site consistent on name, address, phone and specifications.
- Publish a Spanish page and an English page for cross-border buyers, each on its own URL, and link them.
Mistakes to avoid
- Using Spain-style vocabulary or formal textbook Spanish that Mexican buyers do not type.
- Quoting a ChatGPT user count for Mexico that no source supports.
- Collecting leads with no aviso de privacidad.
- Letting marketplace titles and prices drift from the facts on your own site.
Frequently asked questions
How can a business in Mexico get recommended by ChatGPT?
Publish clear answer pages in Mexican Spanish, make sure search engines can crawl them, and keep your name, address, prices and reviews consistent across your site, Google Business Profile and marketplaces. Nobody controls what ChatGPT recommends, since it is a third-party system, but clear and verifiable pages give it something to quote.
Do I need special markup to appear in Google AI Overviews in Mexico?
No. Google says a page only needs to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet, and that no special files, AI text files or markup are required 7. Structured data is still worth adding where it matches the visible text on the page.
Should my website be in English or Spanish for Mexico?
Does Mexico's privacy law apply to my contact form?
If you collect personal data from people in Mexico, probably yes. A 2025 federal law, as summarised by DLA Piper, appears to require a privacy notice before processing and express written consent for sensitive data 4. This is general information from a law-firm summary, so confirm the details with a Mexican lawyer.
Is Bing worth the effort in Mexico?
It is worth a small effort. Bing held 9.43% of search referrals in September 2026, against 88.08% for Google 1. Verifying your site in Bing Webmaster Tools takes minutes, and it shows whether Bing can read your pages.
