AI SEO in Canada: How to Get Recommended by ChatGPT and Google AI

The short answer

To get recommended by ChatGPT and Google AI search in Canada, let both read your site, then decide your language plan before anything else. Publish English and French pages on separate URLs where your buyers need both, link them with en-CA and fr-CA tags, allow OpenAI's OAI-SearchBot, claim your Google Business Profile, and check Quebec language, PIPEDA and CASL rules.

  • Google sent 85.3% of Canadian search referrals in September 2026, and Bing 10.06%, a higher Bing share than in the US or UK.
  • Google lists Canada, English and French among the places and languages where AI Overviews and AI Mode run.
  • In the 2021 census data, 46.4% of Quebecers were bilingual, against a far lower share of French speakers outside Quebec.
  • PIPEDA covers private-sector personal data, and CASL fines for spam reach CAD 10,000,000 per violation for organisations.
  • Chalk Labs has no published Canadian results. Its only regional proof is Meru Trophy in Bengaluru, India.

Google lists Canada, English and French for both AI Overviews and AI Mode 34. No Canadian figure we could open shows how many people ask AI assistants to name local providers.

Build local prompts for Canada

Pick a business type and a place. Copy the prompts, then ask them in the AI assistants your buyers use and see who gets named.

Your 5 prompts

  • best accountant in Toronto
  • accountant near me in Toronto
  • how much does a accountant cost in Toronto
  • meilleur accountant à Toronto
  • accountant près de moi à Toronto

Quebec prompts are often in French, with Canadian terms that differ from France. Have a Quebec French speaker review wording. Elsewhere, buyers write short English prompts that name a city and sometimes a province.

What do Google AI search and ChatGPT need from a Canadian site?

Access comes first, and it needs no special markup. Google lists Canada among the countries where AI Overviews are available, with English and French on the language list 3. It lists Canada for AI Mode too, with English and French among the languages 4.

Google says there are no extra requirements or special optimisations for these features, and a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet 5. For ChatGPT, OpenAI says its OAI-SearchBot places sites in search results. Allow it in robots.txt, and allow about 24 hours for the change 6.

Run the AI Crawler Checker on your domain. If a security tool blocks bots, our guide to allowing AI crawlers in robots.txt shows the fix.

Do you need French pages, and where?

You need French pages if you sell in Quebec, and probably not if you sell only outside it. Wikipedia, using 2021 census figures, reports that 46.4% of Quebecers were bilingual in English and French and that nearly 95% could speak French. Outside Quebec, about 97.6% could speak English and only about 7.5% French 7.

So a Toronto accountant gains little from a full French site, but a Montreal accountant loses buyers without one. Treat French as a market decision, not a courtesy.

Keep one language per page, give each version its own URL, and link them with hreflang. Google says tags must point both ways or they are ignored, and it supports language and region codes 8. It also says it works out a page's language from the visible text, and recommends one language for content and navigation on each page 9.

hreflang for an English page and its Canadian French twin (replace yourdomain.ca; put all three lines on both pages)
  • <link rel="alternate" hreflang="en-CA" href="https://yourdomain.ca/accounting/" />
  • <link rel="alternate" hreflang="fr-CA" href="https://yourdomain.ca/fr/comptabilite/" />
  • <link rel="alternate" hreflang="x-default" href="https://yourdomain.ca/accounting/" />

What does Quebec's language law mean for your content?

If you trade in Quebec, French is a legal matter as well as a marketing one. A law-firm summary of the Charter of the French language, as reformed by Bill 96 in 2022, says it applies to a company's website whether or not the company has a Quebec establishment, if it offers products or services to Quebec consumers 10. The French version must be complete, including terms, privacy policy and FAQs, and it must be of at least the same quality as any version in another language 10.

The same summary says many recent Court of Quebec fines involved non-compliant websites, but it gives no amounts, so we state none 10. The Office québécois de la langue française publishes the official guidance, so read it and check with a Quebec lawyer before you launch a Quebec site.

For AI visibility, the safe reading is simple: a proper French version of your key pages serves both the law and French-language prompts. Use human translation, not a raw machine pass.

Which privacy and email rules apply to Canadian forms and marketing?

PIPEDA is the main privacy law for private-sector commercial activity, with provincial exceptions. The federal privacy commissioner says it sets the ground rules for how organisations collect, use and disclose personal information, through ten fair information principles 11. Alberta, British Columbia and Quebec have their own private-sector laws deemed substantially similar, so organisations there are generally exempt from PIPEDA for in-province activity 11.

Email marketing falls under Canada's Anti-Spam Legislation. Section 6 bans sending a commercial electronic message unless the recipient has consented and the message meets content rules. Section 20 sets the maximum penalty at CAD 1,000,000 for an individual and CAD 10,000,000 for any other person 12.

In practice, put a plain privacy page on your site and collect consent before newsletters. This is not legal advice, so check with a Canadian adviser.

Does a .ca domain help you get recommended?

A .ca domain is a clear signal of Canadian intent, but it is not a requirement. Google says country-code domains give a strong signal that a site is meant for a certain country, and warns that some countries restrict who can register theirs 9. The page does not name .ca, so the principle is Google's and the application is ours.

Wikipedia reports that CIRA runs .ca and that registrants must meet Canadian Presence Requirements, with 3,383,905 domains registered at 4 September 2024 13. If you are a Canadian organisation, .ca is open to you. If you serve Canada from abroad, you may not qualify, so use a subfolder such as /ca/ on a global domain and tag it en-CA.

Which Canadian cities and industries should you write for?

Write for the city where your buyers are, using the local industry as your proof. Wikipedia describes Toronto as Canada's financial centre, with four of the five largest banks on Bay and King Streets. It says Montreal hosts most large pharmaceutical companies and that Vancouver is a major business-services hub 14.

It also reports that the US took 76.4% of Canada's exports in 2025 14. If your buyers are American, publish clear US-facing pages too, with US-style prices and shipping, and tag them en-US. See our page on Toronto for city tactics, and our United States guide for the other side of the border. The table below gives our rules of thumb, not law. Quebec sellers should confirm French requirements with the OQLF.

What has Chalk Labs actually done in Canada?

Chalk Labs has not published Canadian results. Its published search results are Meru Trophy, a local trophy shop in Bengaluru that reached 27,300 Google clicks and 2.3 million impressions in 16 months, and the personal-brand site shilikajain.com 15.

The method we would bring is query research, answer pages, technical readiness and measurement. French-language prompts are the part we have not tested ourselves. We do not guarantee rankings or citations in any market.

Rules and platforms that shape results

Rules to know

  • PIPEDA. Sets ground rules for private-sector collection, use and disclosure of personal information in commercial activity, with ten fair information principles. Alberta, BC and Quebec have substantially similar provincial laws.11
  • Canada's Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL). Bans commercial electronic messages without recipient consent and compliant content. Maximum penalties are CAD 1,000,000 for an individual and CAD 10,000,000 for others.12
  • Charter of the French language (as reformed by Bill 96, 2022). As reformed by Bill 96 in 2022, applies to websites that offer goods or services to Quebec consumers. A complete French version is required, of at least the same quality as any other language.10

Platforms that matter here

  • Google Business Profile: local ranking rests on relevance, distance and prominence 16
  • Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, in English and French 34
  • ChatGPT search, fed by OpenAI's OAI-SearchBot 6
  • A .ca domain or a /ca/ section tagged en-CA and fr-CA 913
  • Bing, at a higher share than in the US or UK 1

What works in Canada

  • Decide French by market: full French pages for Quebec sales, selective French elsewhere 7.
  • Publish en-CA and fr-CA versions on separate URLs with reciprocal hreflang tags 8.
  • Use a .ca domain if you qualify, or a /ca/ section with en-CA tags if you do not 13.
  • Name provinces and cities in legal, tax and licence content, since rules differ by province 11.
  • Add US-facing pages with US prices if American buyers matter to you 14.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Machine-translating an English site into French with no fluent reviewer. Poor French hurts trust in Quebec.
  • Assuming PIPEDA is the only privacy law. Alberta, BC and Quebec have their own 11.
  • Sending newsletters without recorded consent, which CASL penalises 12.
  • Writing one 'Canada' page and expecting it to win Vancouver and Montreal prompts alike.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a French website to be recommended in Canada?

Only if you sell in Quebec or to French-speaking buyers. The 2021 census data reported by Wikipedia shows about 7.5% of people outside Quebec can speak French, against nearly 95% inside it 7. Decide by market, and use a fluent human reviewer for translation.

Does Google show AI Overviews in French in Canada?

Google's help page lists Canada among the AI Overviews availability countries and French among the languages 3. The lists are separate, so this does not prove a French page wins a French prompt. Test your own prompts in both languages.

Is a .ca domain better than a .com for Canadian visibility?

Google says country-code domains are a strong signal that a site targets a country 9. The guidance does not name .ca, and .ca requires Canadian presence 13. If you qualify, it helps. If not, a /ca/ section on your .com works with en-CA tags.

What are the penalties under Canada's anti-spam law?

Section 20 of the Act sets maximum administrative penalties of CAD 1,000,000 for an individual and CAD 10,000,000 for any other person 12. These are statutory maximums per violation, not typical fines. Get consent before sending commercial email, and ask a Canadian adviser.
