AI SEO in Berlin: How to Get Recommended by ChatGPT and Google AI Search
To get recommended by ChatGPT and Google AI search in Berlin, let both read your site, then write each page in the language its buyer uses: German for local services, English for international and startup buyers. Show the legal details German law requires, keep reviews honest, and handle consent banners so they do not hide your text. We do not guarantee any recommendation.
- Google took 87.84% of German search referrals in September 2026, with Bing at 6.49%. No Berlin-only split was available.
- Write each page for one language and buyer. Google detects language from the text itself, not from tags.
- German law requires provider details on commercial sites, consent for device storage, and honest reviews. Check all three before publishing.
- Many Berlin startups sell to international buyers, so English comparison, pricing and documentation pages likely matter more than district pages (our judgment).
- Test that your consent banner does not hide page text from crawlers.
How do people in Berlin find businesses with search and AI?
They use Google first, as in the rest of Germany. Statcounter recorded Google at 87.84% of German search referrals in September 2026, Bing at 6.49%, Yahoo at 1.71% and DuckDuckGo at 1.07% 1. The figure is for Germany, not Berlin, and it counts clicks to sites, not AI assistant use 1.
Use of AI tools is already common. Eurostat's 2025 survey found 32.25% of people in Germany used generative AI tools in the previous three months. That included 27.20% for private purposes and 15.79% for work 2. Among 16 to 24 year olds the figure was 52.65% 2. Eurostat flags a few small subgroups as lower reliability; the headline figures are not flagged 2.
We found no Berlin-only figure for asking an AI assistant to name a local provider. Assume your younger buyers already do it and check your own enquiry forms by asking how people found you.

Should a Berlin business write in German, English or both?
Write each page in the language of the buyer it serves, and do not translate everything by habit. German is Berlin's official and predominant language, and the most common foreign languages include Turkish, Polish, English, Persian and Arabic 3. In December 2019 the city had 777,345 registered residents of foreign nationality 3. Your buyers are not one audience.
Google does not read your language tags to decide a page's language. It says it uses algorithms on the text, and that hreflang, the tag that links language versions, works only when each version lists itself and all the others 9. Google also says localised versions count as duplicates only when the main content stays untranslated 9. So translate properly, or do not publish the second version.
The table gives a working split. The prompts are modelled examples, not observed data.
| Buyer | Write in | Page approach | Prompt they might type |
|---|---|---|---|
| Berlin resident choosing a local service | German | Full German page with address, opening hours and provider details | Zahnarzt Prenzlauer Berg Termin am Samstag |
| English-speaking newcomer in the city | English | English page that names the districts you serve and says whether staff speak English | English-speaking tax advisor in Berlin for freelancers |
| Startup buyer based abroad | English | Pricing, documentation and comparison pages with EUR and VAT stated | software agency in Berlin for a fintech MVP |
| Mixed team deciding together | Both | A German page and an English page, each fully written and linked with hreflang | Steuerberater Startup Berlin Gründung |
What does Berlin's startup economy change about AI search?
It shifts demand toward business and software questions, many asked in English by people who are not in Berlin. Wikipedia lists high tech, services, creative industries, startups, research and media among the city's key sectors, and puts its 2025 nominal GDP at €218.29 billion 3. Its Adlershof science and business park is described as Germany's largest technology park measured by revenue 3.
Wikipedia also says Berlin generated the most venture capital for young companies in Europe in 2015 3. That is old, so use it as background, not as today's ranking. We did not open a current startup report, so we make no claim about the present size of the scene.
Many Berlin startups sell to international buyers, so in our judgment a Berlin page is more a hiring and trust asset than a lead source. The pages that win buyers are pricing, integration guides, security and data-handling notes, and honest comparisons. Our guides on writing comparison pages that get cited and structuring a pricing page for AI show how. If your product is software, also read AI SEO for B2B SaaS.
What do ChatGPT and Google AI search need from a Berlin site?
They need to read it. Google lists Germany and German for AI Overviews 8, and says AI Overviews and AI Mode have no extra requirements beyond a page being indexed and eligible to show with a snippet 10. Google's page does not say whether AI Mode runs in German, so we make no claim about that.
For ChatGPT, OpenAI says OAI-SearchBot surfaces sites in ChatGPT search, and robots.txt changes can take about 24 hours to apply 11. Allow it, then test. German sites often add a consent banner, and a badly built one can hide the page text from bots. Use the AI Crawler Checker and our guide to making a site readable without scripts to confirm that your text appears before anyone clicks Accept.
Which German and EU rules apply to a Berlin business website?
Four rule sets matter most. First, provider details. Section 5 of the Digitale-Dienste-Gesetz says providers of commercial digital services must keep their name and address, a fast electronic contact including an email address, any register and registration number, and any VAT identification number easy to recognise and directly reachable 4. Many German sites publish this on a page called the Impressum, although the statute text does not use that word. Put it in your footer.
Second, consent for device storage. Section 25 of the TDDDG requires a user's consent before information is stored on, or read from, their device, unless the access is strictly necessary for a service the user asked for 5. Third, the GDPR. The European Commission says it applies to firms outside the EU that offer goods or services to people in the EU or monitor their behaviour, and that small firms must comply, though some obligations may not apply 7.
Fourth, fair advertising. The English translation of the unfair competition act (UWG) covers misleading practices in section 5 and misleading omissions in section 5a 6. Its section 5(5) presumes a price-reduction ad misleading if the higher price was charged for an unreasonably short time, and the advertiser must prove otherwise 6. So keep a dated price history for every 'was' price.
How should you handle reviews and trust claims in Germany?
Treat reviews as regulated content. The UWG translation says it is always unlawful to say reviews come from real buyers without reasonable and proportionate checks that they do (Annex No. 23b), and always unlawful to submit or commission fake consumer reviews (Annex No. 23c) 6. It also treats whether and how you check reviewers as material information when you publish reviews (section 5b(3)) 6.
AI assistants lean on third-party opinions, so reviews matter, but fake ones are a legal and reputational risk. Ask real clients, say how you verify them, and never pay for or write reviews yourself. Our guide to getting cited from review sites shows safe ways to ask.
What should a Berlin business publish first?
Publish the pages that remove the buyer's biggest doubt, in the right language, with the legal details in place. The example shows a pair of pages for one service, not a real client.
Then add the pages that fit your audience, using the bullets below. Test each opening with the Answer Block Checker.
- Local services: one German page per core service, with address, hours, prices in EUR including VAT, and the districts you really serve.
- Startups and software firms: pricing, integrations, security and data-handling pages in English, plus one honest comparison with a named alternative.
- Agencies and consultancies: process pages that say who does the work, how long it takes and what it costs, and one worked example.
- All firms: a provider-details page, a privacy page, and a reviews page that explains how you collect and check reviews.
- /buchhaltung-startups - German: answer in two sentences, price in EUR plus VAT, who signs the books
- /en/bookkeeping-for-startups - English: written separately, not machine-translated word for word
- Both pages carry hreflang tags pointing to each other and to themselves
- Both link to one provider-details page and one privacy page
- Each answers the five questions founders asked on onboarding calls
How does Berlin differ from the rest of Germany and other hubs?
Berlin differs through its mix: German-speaking locals, a large English-speaking professional crowd and founders who sell far beyond the city. The national rules above apply everywhere in Germany, so also read our Germany guide.
For another startup and nomad hub with English-heavy B2B, compare Lisbon. For a larger English-language market with different rules, see London. We have not compared search behaviour across these cities with one method.
What has Chalk Labs done in Berlin?
Chalk Labs has no published Berlin results. It is a Web3 and AI growth agency, and its published search results are Meru Trophy, a local trophy shop in Bengaluru that reached 27,300 Google clicks and 2.3 million impressions in 16 months, and the personal-brand site shilikajain.com 12.
The method would carry over: query research, answer pages, technical readiness and measurement. In Berlin the work would centre on German and English page pairs, the provider-details footer and a consent banner that crawlers can read past. No outcome is promised.
Rules and platforms that shape results
Rules to know
- Provider details under section 5 DDG. Commercial digital services must keep name, address, fast electronic contact including email, register number and VAT ID easy to recognise and directly reachable.4
- Device consent under section 25 TDDDG. Consent is needed to store or read information on a user's device, unless strictly necessary for a service the user asked for.5
- GDPR. Applies to organisations in the EU and to those outside it that offer goods or services to people in the EU or monitor their behaviour.7
- Act against Unfair Competition (UWG). Covers misleading practices and omissions, price-reduction ads and fake or unverified reviews.6
Platforms that matter here
What works in Berlin
- Write German pages for local buyers and separate English pages for international ones, each fully written for its reader 9.
- Link language versions with reciprocal hreflang tags, each page listing itself and all others 9.
- Put provider details in the footer of every page 4.
- Test that your consent banner does not hide page text from crawlers.
- Publish pricing in EUR with VAT stated and keep a dated price history for any 'was' price 6.
Mistakes to avoid
- Machine-translating a whole site, which leaves thin and awkward pages.
- Buying or writing reviews, which the UWG treats as always unlawful 6.
- Skipping provider details on a commercial site 4.
- Building a page for every Berlin district when you serve none of them specially.
- Reading national German figures as proof of how Berlin buyers behave 1.
Frequently asked questions
How do I get my Berlin business recommended by ChatGPT?
Allow OpenAI's OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt, which OpenAI says surfaces sites in ChatGPT search, and expect up to about 24 hours for changes 11. Then publish clear, specific pages in the language your buyer uses, with prices and provider details. Nobody can promise a recommendation.
Do I need an English version of my Berlin website?
Does a cookie banner affect AI search visibility?
It can, if it hides your text from crawlers. German law requires consent before storing or reading information on a device unless it is strictly necessary 5. Build the banner so page text loads without a click, then test it with a crawler checker. Ask a data protection adviser about your set-up.
Can I post customer reviews on my Berlin site?
Yes, if they are real and you check them. The UWG translation makes it always unlawful to claim reviews come from real buyers without reasonable checks, and always unlawful to commission fake reviews 6. Say how you verify reviewers on the page. Ask a lawyer to check your wording.
Does Chalk Labs work with Berlin businesses?
No Berlin results are published. Chalk Labs is a Web3 and AI growth agency, and its published search results are Meru Trophy in Bengaluru and shilikajain.com 12. The method transfers, but German wording, law and competitors change the detail. We do not guarantee rankings or AI citations.
