AI SEO for Solar Installers

The short answer

Solar installers (with California as the worked example) get recommended by ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews when AI can verify their licence, service area and track record, and when their incentive and savings pages are accurate and dated. Publish one clear page per question buyers ask, show proof of licence, explain local rules such as California's net billing, and keep reviews honest. Measure over months.

  • Incentive pages go stale fast: the federal homeowner solar credit does not apply to property placed in service after 2025. 6
  • California exports now earn credits that are usually below the retail rate, so savings claims need care. 7
  • Websites supplied 42% and Business Profiles 28.5% of local AI citations, and you control both. 1
  • Savings and payback claims need objective evidence before they run. 9
  • Chalk Labs has no published solar results; its proof comes from a Bengaluru trophy shop and a personal-brand site. 12

How do homeowners use AI to choose a solar installer?

They use it to learn first and shortlist second. A prompt like 'best solar installer for a home in California' asks AI to pick, but the same buyer also asks what solar costs, whether it pays back and which incentives are left. Each of those is a page you can publish.

General local data sets the scene. In one BrightLocal survey of 1,002 US adults, 45% used generative AI for local recommendations, up from 6% a year earlier. 2 In another, 52% of 1,227 consumers began their latest local search on Google Search, and 23% used AI tools. 3 We found no solar-specific adoption figure, so treat these as general local numbers.

Why it matters in Solar installation
  • A solar sale is large and slow, so being named early in research matters.
  • Incentives and local rules change, and AI may repeat stale versions of them.
  • Websites and Business Profiles supplied most local AI citations, and you control both. 1
  • Buyers worry about pricing: 32% cited unclear pricing as a reason not to contact a business. 11

How it is worked out

  • Enquiries = visits × enquiry rate.
  • Customers = enquiries × close rate.
  • Revenue = customers × average customer value.
  • Revenue minus cost = revenue − monthly cost.
  • Return multiple = revenue ÷ monthly cost.
  • Visits to break even = monthly cost ÷ revenue per visit. Revenue per visit = enquiry rate × close rate × customer value.

What do AI engines look at when they pick a solar company?

They lean on your website and your Google Business Profile. In a study of about 200,000 local AI searches, websites made up 42% of citations and Business Profiles 28.5%. 1 ChatGPT named 4.1 businesses per answer on average and AI Overviews named 2.5. 1

Solar is a big purchase, so buyers check you before they call. Of consumers who decided not to contact a business, 33% cited negative reviews and 32% cited unclear pricing or no offers. 11 Your pages need to answer both.

ReviewsRecent reviews with replies from named customers47% will not use a business with under 20 reviews 2
PagesIndexed pages that can show a snippetNo special markup or AI text file is needed 4

What happens to incentive pages when the incentive ends?

They become wrong, and AI may keep repeating them. The IRS says the 30% residential clean energy credit is not available for property placed in service after 31 December 2025. 6 A page that still promises it in 2026 can mislead buyers and damage your name.

Audit every page that mentions a credit, rebate or deadline. Add a dated line such as 'Checked on 20 October 2026' to each one, and remove offers that no longer apply. Say plainly what you do not know, such as how a lease or power purchase agreement is treated, rather than guessing.

Also publish what has not changed: state and utility programmes, financing options you offer and the real cost of a system without a federal credit. Honest pages are more useful than hopeful ones, and more likely to be quoted.

How do California's rules change what a solar page should say?

They change the savings story. California's net billing tariff applied from 15 April 2023 for customers applying for interconnection. 7 Exports are credited at a rate based on the value of that power to the grid, which is usually below the retail rate. 7 Surplus left at the annual true-up is valued at the wholesale price. 7

So a California page should not repeat old 'sell power back at full retail price' claims. Explain that self-use matters, that export credits are lower and that a battery changes the maths. Show your own assumptions.

The California licensing board's disaster-rebuilding rules, issued for the 2025 Los Angeles wildfires, apply to residential solar too, including a down payment cap of the lesser of $1,000 or 10% of the contract price. 8 Check the board's current page and your own state's rules before you publish payment terms.

Net metering, licensing and incentive rules differ by state. If you work outside California, list your own utility's export rate and your state's licence rules on the page instead.

A savings claim that can be backed up (illustrative wording)
  • Weak: 'Save up to 90% on your bill.'
  • Better: 'Your estimate uses your last 12 months of bills, your roof's sun exposure and the current export rate. We show the assumptions and the payback range on every quote.'
  • Why: advertisers need objective evidence before a claim runs. [s9]

Which claims and review practices can get a solar company in trouble?

Savings claims are the main risk. The FTC says advertisers need a reasonable basis, meaning objective evidence, before a claim runs. 9 Do not rely on customer testimonials alone to prove a savings figure; show your calculation.

Reviews are the second risk. The FTC reviews rule took effect on 21 October 2024, and courts can impose civil penalties for knowing violations. 10 Google bans rewards for reviews and selective asking. 13 Ask every customer and accept the mix you get.

What should a solar installer publish first?

Publish the state-level cost and savings page that answers the seed prompt, then a licence and proof page, then an incentives page you update on a schedule. Write the first two sentences of each page as the answer.

Add a financing page, a battery page and a repair-or-replace page for older systems. Add pages for the utilities and cities you serve, with real local rules and permit steps. Our guide on turning customer calls into answer pages shows how to find the questions.

Do not use copy-and-swap city pages. A page for a city should name that city's permit process, utility and typical roofs, or it should not exist.

  • How much solar costs in your state, with what drives the quote.
  • Does solar pay back, with a worked example and clear assumptions.
  • Incentives today, with a 'last checked' date.
  • Net billing explained, if you serve California.
  • Licence, insurance and warranty proof.

How do you measure whether AI is sending solar leads?

Log your buyer prompts monthly, three runs each on two engines, and note which installers are named. Answers vary, so single runs mislead. Search Console reports AI Overviews and AI Mode traffic under the Web search type, mixed with ordinary search. 4

Sales cycles are long, so also record the first-touch source on every lead. Ask 'How did you first hear about us?' in your quote form. Our guide to self-reported attribution shows wording that works.

What have Chalk Labs and Rahil Jain done in this field, and what have they not?

We have not published results for a solar company, and nothing here comes from a solar client.

What transfers is the method. Chalk Labs reports that a Bengaluru trophy shop went from near-zero search visibility to 27.3k clicks over 16 months, using an AI SEO programme aimed at high-intent local searches. 12 That is retail, not energy, and the figures are Chalk Labs' own account. We do not guarantee rankings or citations.

Your first 90 days

Days 1-30

  • Run six buyer prompts on two AI engines, three runs each, and save the log.
  • Audit every page that mentions a credit, rebate or deadline and add a last-checked date.
  • Fix the Business Profile name, address visibility and categories.
  • Add licence number and regulator link to the footer.

Days 31-60

  • Publish the cost and savings page with a worked example.
  • Publish the incentives page with a quarterly review date.
  • Publish a net billing page if you serve California.
  • Ask finished-job customers for reviews, with no reward.

Days 61-90

  • Publish the battery, financing and older-system pages.
  • Publish three city pages that name local rules and permit steps.
  • Rerun the prompt log, compare with day one and plan the next quarter.

The first pages to publish

  1. Solar cost and savings in your state. It answers the seed prompt's research stage with stated assumptions.
  2. Does solar pay back?. A worked example is a quotable answer that generic pages lack.
  3. Solar incentives today. A dated page keeps AI from repeating stale credit claims.
  4. How California net billing works. Explains export credits so savings claims stay honest.
  5. Solar plus battery. Self-use value rises as export credits fall.
  6. Financing options. Buyers compare cash, loan and lease before choosing.
  7. Licence, insurance and warranty. One proof page you can link from every service page.
  8. City and utility pages. Local permit steps and utility rules make each page unique.

Trust signals and risks

What AI looks for

  • A licence number and a link to the regulator's lookup. 8
  • Clear down payment and contract terms that match your state's rules.
  • At least 20 recent, honest reviews, with replies. 2
  • Savings estimates that show their assumptions. 9
  • A Business Profile with the real name and a hidden address if you work from home. 5

What can go wrong

  • Promoting an incentive that has ended. 6
  • Old claims about selling power back at the retail rate. 7
  • Savings claims without objective evidence. 9
  • Rewarded or selectively requested reviews. 13
  • Copy-and-swap city pages with no local rules.

Frequently asked questions

Can a solar installer really get recommended by ChatGPT?

It can be named, but nobody controls that. ChatGPT named about four businesses per local answer in one large study. 1 You improve your chances with accurate pages, a clean Business Profile and honest reviews, then measure over months.

Is the federal solar tax credit still available?

The IRS says the 30% residential clean energy credit is not available for property placed in service after 31 December 2025. 6 Check the IRS page and a tax adviser before advertising any credit, and date every claim you publish.

What is California net billing, and why does it matter for my page?

It is the tariff that applied from 15 April 2023 for new interconnections. Exports earn credits based on grid value, usually below the retail rate. 7 Pages that promise full retail credit for exports are out of date.

Do I need schema markup or an llms.txt file to appear in AI Overviews?

No. Google says a page needs to be indexed and snippet-eligible, and that no special markup or AI text files are required. 4 Spend the effort on accurate content, proof and reviews.

Does Chalk Labs have solar clients?

No solar results are published. Chalk Labs' proof comes from a Bengaluru trophy shop and a personal-brand site. 12 The method transfers, but we do not claim solar experience.
