What Is Topical Authority?
Topical authority is how completely and credibly a website covers one subject. A site builds it by answering the main question and the related ones, linking those pages together, and showing real expertise. It is an industry term, not a score Google publishes. To build it, pick one topic, map its questions, publish one clear page per question and link them.
- Topical authority means deep, expert coverage of one subject, not general site strength like Domain Rating 1.
- AI tools split one question into several searches, so a site that answers the related questions has more pages to be picked from 7.
- Google asks if content is complete and written by someone who knows the topic. It does not publish a topical authority score 2.
- Ahrefs estimates 6 to 12 months for clear movement. That is a vendor estimate, not a measured study 1.
What is topical authority?
Topical authority is the standing a website earns by covering one subject thoroughly and credibly. Ahrefs defines it as the point when search engines recognise your site as the expert source on a specific subject 1.
Think of two plumbers' websites. One has a single page that says 'we fix pipes'. The other has pages on burst pipes, water heater repair, drain cleaning, prices, permits and emergency call-outs, all linked together and written by a licensed plumber. The second site has more topical authority for plumbing.
It is different from general site strength. Domain Rating, a number from Ahrefs that scores how strong a site's backlinks (links from other sites) look, measures links across the whole site 1. Topical authority is about one subject at a time.
What did an AI search tool do when we asked this question?
On 20 October 2026 we gave this page's question to Gemini with Google Search switched on. Gemini chose to run two searches: 'what is topical authority SEO' and 'how to build topical authority SEO'. It split one prompt into a definition search and a how-to search, and it added the word SEO that we never typed.
The sites attached to that answer included semrush.com, hubspot.com, ahrefs.com, mailchimp.com and reddit.com, plus several smaller marketing blogs. Most were software vendors and marketing publishers. We ran one engine once, so treat this as a single sample, not a pattern.
The lesson is simple. One question became two narrower ones, and a site with a page for each narrow question has two chances to be cited. A site with one vague page has one weaker chance.
How does topical authority work?
Topical authority is not a switch in a search engine. It is a name for what happens when a site gives complete, expert answers across a subject. Google does not define it as a score; we found no Google document that does. Its helpful-content guidance asks instead whether the content gives a 'substantial, complete, or comprehensive description of the topic' and was written by someone who demonstrably knows it 2.
Three ingredients show up in nearly every explanation. The first is coverage: the main question plus the follow-up questions around it. The second is connection: internal links, meaning links between your own pages, so readers and crawlers can move from one answer to the next. The third is credibility: named authors, first-hand detail and sources.
Links matter because Google mostly discovers pages by following them 4. Descriptive link text also tells readers and search engines what the next page contains 4. Microsoft lists internal linking as a baseline for being found in AI answers, and calls it 'just the starting point' 5.
Why does topical authority matter for AI search?
AI search tools rarely run one search. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode may use query fan-out, which means issuing several related searches across subtopics and data sources to build one response 7. Our guide to query fan-out explains the idea in full.
A site that covers a whole subject can match more of those sub-searches. Ahrefs reports one Healthline page on magnesium glycinate that ranks for about 2,500 Google keywords and appears for 473 AI Overview queries 1. That is one vendor's example of a deep page, not proof that coverage causes citations.
Ahrefs also reports a small site, Bicycle Motor Works (Domain Rating 15), outranking Amazon (Domain Rating 96) for competitive e-bike keywords 1. The point is that focus can beat raw site strength in a narrow field. Treat it as an illustration, because it is a hand-picked case.
What does a topic map look like for a real business?
Here is an illustrative map for a payroll software company that sells to small businesses in the US. The topic is 'payroll for small business'. The page names are examples, not research results.
Each row is one question a buyer would ask, matched to one page. The pillar page gives the overview and links to every page beneath it, which is the hub pattern Ahrefs recommends 1.
- 1. Write the buyer's question as the heading.
- 2. Answer it in the first two sentences.
- 3. Add one thing only you can show: a real price, a screenshot, a worked sum.
- 4. Link up to the pillar and sideways to two related cluster pages.
- 5. Name the author and say why they know the subject.
| Page role | Question it answers | Links to |
|---|---|---|
| Pillar | How does payroll work for a small business? | Every page below |
| Cluster | What taxes do I withhold from employees? | Pillar, filing deadlines |
| Cluster | How much does payroll software cost? | Pillar, comparison |
| Cluster | Payroll software vs hiring an accountant? | Pillar, cost |
| Cluster | How do I pay a contractor, not an employee? | Pillar, taxes |
| Cluster | What payroll mistakes trigger penalties? | Pillar, taxes |
How long does it take to build topical authority?
It takes months, not weeks, and nobody can promise a date. Ahrefs estimates 6 to 12 months for significant movement, and says a narrow niche may need 15 to 20 connected pieces while a broad subject may need 50 or more 1. Ahrefs labels this an estimate, not a study, so use it as a planning range.
For scale, one Chalk Labs local-search programme, Meru Trophy in Bengaluru, reached 27,300 Google clicks over 16 months. It is a single local shop, not a content hub, so it shows that search work takes months, not that this method takes 16.
Be wary of anyone who sells a 30-day topical authority. Content takes time to be crawled, linked and trusted, and we do not guarantee any ranking or citation.
What do people get wrong about topical authority?
The biggest mistake is treating it as a publishing quota. Google lists 'content primarily made to attract visits from search engines' and producing lots of content on many different topics in the hope that some will perform as warning signs 2.
A second mistake is mass-producing pages. Google's spam policy defines scaled content abuse as generating many pages mainly to manipulate rankings instead of helping users 6. Thirty thin pages on one topic are unlikely to beat six good ones, and may attract spam concerns.
A third mistake is breaking pages into tiny pieces for AI. Google's guide says there is no requirement to chunk content into small pieces for AI 3. Write complete pages that a person would want to read.
How can you start building it this week?
Start small and specific. Pick the one subject where you have real first-hand knowledge and want to be the obvious answer.
Then do these steps in order:
- Write down 20 questions customers ask you about that subject. Use sales calls and support emails, not guesses.
- Group them. Pick one overview question as the pillar and treat the rest as cluster pages.
- Check which questions already have a good page on your site. Fix those first.
- Publish or improve one page per week, each opening with a direct answer and a named author.
- Link each new page to the pillar and to two siblings with descriptive link text.
- After a month, ask three AI tools the pillar question and note which of your pages, if any, they cite.

Frequently asked questions
Is topical authority a Google ranking factor?
Google does not publish a ranking factor called topical authority, and we found no Google document that defines it as a score. Google's guidance asks whether content is complete and written by someone who knows the subject 2. Treat the term as a useful description of that quality, not a setting you can check.
What is the difference between topical authority and domain authority?
Domain authority, or Ahrefs' Domain Rating, estimates how strong a whole site's backlinks look. Topical authority is about depth on one subject. Ahrefs reports a Domain Rating 15 site outranking Amazon, rated 96, for e-bike keywords, which shows focus can matter in a narrow field 1.
How many pages do I need for topical authority?
Do AI tools like ChatGPT and Gemini care about topical authority?
They do not publish it as a signal. They do split questions into several searches 7, so a site that answers many related questions has more chances to be cited. In our test Gemini ran two searches for one prompt, a definition and a how-to.
Can I build topical authority with AI-written articles?
Only if people check and improve them. Google's spam policy targets pages produced at scale mainly to manipulate rankings, however they are made 6. Add first-hand detail, real examples and a named author to every page.
