What Is Search Everywhere Optimization?

The short answer

Search everywhere optimization is the practice of making your business easy to find and recommend wherever buyers look: Google, YouTube, Reddit, LinkedIn, TikTok and AI assistants such as ChatGPT. It treats each platform as a place where your brand can be found, not one ranking contest. You pick two or three platforms, not all of them.

  • It is a planning idea, not a technical standard: decide which two or three platforms your buyers use, and show up well on those.
  • Depending on the assistant, AI answers often cite YouTube and Reddit, and sometimes LinkedIn, so work on those platforms can show up inside AI answers.
  • Citation patterns shift fast, so build assets you own first and treat any platform as rented space.
  • Do not try to be everywhere: depth on a few platforms beats thin presence on many.

What is search everywhere optimization in one paragraph?

Search everywhere optimization (SEvO) means planning your visibility across every place a buyer might look for an answer. That includes Google, YouTube, Reddit, LinkedIn, TikTok, Amazon-style marketplaces and AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity.

Classic SEO asks how to rank a page on Google. SEvO asks a wider question: when a buyer in your market has a problem, where do they look, and what do they find about you there?

The phrase is a marketing term, not a formal standard. No search engine publishes rules called search everywhere optimization. It is best read as a way to decide where to spend a limited budget.

It does not replace SEO. A strong website is still the base that the other channels point back to.

Explain it at your level

People no longer search in only one place. They ask Google, watch a YouTube video, read a Reddit thread, or ask ChatGPT. Search everywhere optimization means making sure that when they do, they find clear and honest information about your business.

You do not need to be on every platform. Choose the two or three where your buyers actually look, and do good work there.

Why are buyers searching in more places now?

Many people now use AI assistants alongside Google, and those assistants pull from many sites, not only from Google results. A July 2026 survey of 5,067 US adults found 64% had used AI in the previous six months, and 26% had used it to research topics of personal interest 1.

The assistants are large. Google said in July 2026 that AI Mode had passed 1 billion monthly active users and the Gemini app had 950 million 2. Among US AI users in the Menlo survey, ChatGPT reached 60% and Gemini 58%, so many people use more than one tool 1.

Each assistant answers by searching the web, often several times. Google says its AI Overviews and AI Mode may use a technique called query fan-out, which means issuing multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources 3. Those searches land on whichever sites rank for the sub-questions, and that is not always your website.

Which platforms do AI answers actually cite?

AI answers cite a mix of video, forum, social and reference sites, and the mix differs by assistant. In September 2026, Ahrefs studied more than 3 million US queries and ranked the domains Google AI Overviews cited. YouTube came first with 22.9% of mentions, Reddit second with 18.5%, Facebook third with 10.1%, and LinkedIn 19th with 0.6% 4. That share is measured against the 50 most-cited sources, not all citations.

Semrush tracked more than 230,000 prompts from July to October 2025. It found Reddit and Wikipedia were the most-cited domains in ChatGPT search, while Google AI Mode cited LinkedIn, YouTube and Reddit most, and Perplexity cited Reddit, LinkedIn and the US National Institutes of Health 5.

These lists move. Semrush saw Reddit fall from roughly 60% of tracked ChatGPT responses in early August 2025 to about 10% by mid-September, and it said the data does not explain why 5. Ahrefs later reported Reddit cited in about 1 in 5 ChatGPT answers in March 2026 but about 1 in 43 by late September 6.

We found no study in this set measuring TikTok citations in AI answers, so treat TikTok as a buyer-discovery channel, not an AI-citation channel.

Does your own website still matter most?

Yes, because assistants also go straight to brand sites. In Ahrefs' study of 15 million ChatGPT fan-out queries (free, logged-out responses, August to September 2026), 6.8% used the site: operator. Of the site: searches aimed at the roughly 160 most-searched domains, 75.9% pointed at brand sites and only 1.9% at Reddit and Facebook combined 6.

That suggests ChatGPT sometimes checks a brand's own site directly; the study does not show how often this leads to a citation. A clear, crawlable website with plain answers to buyer questions is the asset every other platform points toward.

Google adds that no special extra markup or machine-readable file is needed to appear in its generative AI features, and it says to ignore tactics such as inauthentic mentions 7. Sound basics come first.

Do mentions on other platforms help AI visibility?

They are associated with it, but nobody has shown they cause it. Ahrefs studied 75,000 brands in December 2025 and found YouTube mentions had the strongest correlation with AI visibility, at about 0.737. Branded web mentions came next, at 0.656 to 0.709 depending on the assistant 8.

Ahrefs itself notes that correlation is not causation. Brands that get talked about on YouTube are usually bigger and better known anyway.

The practical reading is modest: being a brand people discuss in several places is a healthy sign, and it is worth earning. It is not a trick you can switch on by posting everywhere.

Where should you put your effort first?

Start from your buyer, not from the platform list. The table below is a decision aid built from the sources above plus common sense. The right column is our judgement, not measured data.

What does this look like for a small business?

Take an imaginary accounting firm for freelancers with one marketer working ten hours a week. The numbers below are illustrative, not a benchmark.

Buyers ask AI assistants things like which accountant suits a freelancer. The firm checks which sources those answers cite, finds directories, a few YouTube explainers and its own thin service pages, and sets a split. It spends most time fixing its own pages, then adds one platform where buyers already look.

Illustrative weekly split of ten hours
  • Hours 1-4 Website: rewrite two service pages so each opens with a direct answer
  • Hours 5-6 YouTube: one short explainer a week, with captions checked by a person
  • Hours 7-8 LinkedIn: one post from the founder using a real client question (no names)
  • Hours 9 Directories: confirm name, phone and address match everywhere
  • Hour 10 Check: ask 5 buyer questions in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity; log who is cited

What mistakes waste a small team's time?

The biggest mistake is reading SEvO as a call to be active on every network. Spreading one person's time over six platforms usually gives six weak profiles. Pick the platforms your buyers already use and go deep.

A second mistake is copying one post across platforms. A LinkedIn post, a YouTube video and a Reddit answer have different norms, and each should read as native to its home.

What can you do this week?

Write down ten questions a buyer would ask before choosing you, and run them in ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity. Note which sites appear. Our query fan-out explorer shows the searches behind an answer, and the guide to researching query fan-out explains how to read them.

Pick the two platforms that appear most for your questions and where you can speak with real expertise. Then follow the steps in auditing your brand in AI search. For the wider picture, see what AI SEO is and how SEO, AEO and GEO differ.

Frequently asked questions

Is search everywhere optimization the same as SEO?

No. SEO focuses on ranking pages in search engines such as Google and Bing. Search everywhere optimization includes SEO but also covers video, forums, social networks and AI assistants. SEO remains the base, because your own website is the asset the other platforms point back to.

Do I need to be on Reddit, YouTube and TikTok?

Not necessarily. Choose platforms where your buyers already ask questions and where you can add real expertise. Check which sites AI assistants cite for your top buyer questions, then start with one or two. Being thin on six platforms is worse than being strong on two.

Does posting on YouTube make ChatGPT recommend me?

No proven link exists. Ahrefs found YouTube mentions correlate with AI visibility across 75,000 brands, but it says correlation is not causation. Good videos can help buyers find you directly, and some AI features cite YouTube, so they are worth making if your buyers watch video.

How do I measure results across so many platforms?

Track a fixed list of buyer prompts monthly and log whether you are mentioned or cited. Add a 'How did you hear about us?' question that includes AI tools. In GA4, the AI Assistant channel counts visits from tools such as ChatGPT, but AI Mode visits sit under Organic Search. 9

Is this a real standard or just a buzzword?

It is a marketing label, not a standard from any search engine. The underlying idea is sound: buyers use many discovery routes, so your visibility plan should too. Judge it by whether it helps you choose where to spend time, not by the name.
