What Are Featured Snippets?

The short answer

A featured snippet is a box at the top of a Google results page that shows an answer pulled from a web page, with a link to it. Google chooses the page; you cannot mark one up 1. AI Overviews now do a similar job, and Ahrefs found they grew while snippets shrank in 2025 2.

  • Google decides whether a page makes a good featured snippet for a search. You cannot opt a page in with markup 1.
  • In Ahrefs' 2025 sample, featured snippets fell from 15.41% to 5.53% of results pages while AI Overviews rose 2.
  • To show as a link in AI Overviews, a page needs to be indexed and eligible for a snippet. Nothing extra is required 3.
  • We found no study of how often featured-snippet pages are cited in AI Overviews. Ahrefs found only 37.9% of cited URLs ranked in the organic top 10, so ranking well is not a reliable predictor of a citation 5.

What is a featured snippet?

A featured snippet is a special box on Google's results page where the format of a normal result is reversed. The answer text comes first, and the page title and link sit underneath. Google also uses the same idea inside the related questions group known as People Also Ask 1.

Two facts matter for owners. Google's systems decide whether a page would make a good featured snippet for a search, and site owners cannot mark a page as a featured snippet 1. You earn the box by being the clearest answer to a question, not by adding code.

People used to call this position zero, because the box sat above the first normal result. That name stuck, but the box is a layout choice by Google, not a rank you can claim.

Explain it at your level

When you ask Google a simple question, it sometimes shows a boxed answer at the very top, taken from one website, with a link. That box is a featured snippet. You cannot buy it or code it. Google picks the page that answers the question most clearly. AI summaries now fill the same spot more often.

What shapes do featured snippets take, and what should you write for each?

Google's help page describes the boxed result and the related questions group, and it does not list formats beyond those 1. Practitioners and the query our research agent ran group the box into three shapes: a paragraph, a list and a table. The table below says what to write for each. These are working conventions from industry practice, not Google rules.

Three common snippet shapes and the page content that suits each
ShapeTypical questionWhat to put on the page
ParagraphWhat is X? Why does Y happen?A direct answer of about 40 to 60 words (our rule of thumb) right under a question heading
ListHow do I do X? What are the types of Y?Numbered steps or bullets, each starting with a verb or a noun
TableX vs Y. How much does Z cost?A real HTML table with a header row and short cell text

How do featured snippets relate to AI answers?

They solve the same problem, which is answering a question on the results page, and they overlap in what they reward: a clear, self-contained answer. They are separate systems with separate rules. A page can win one and miss the other.

The usage numbers moved fast. Ahrefs checked 1,000,000 random US desktop results pages and found AI Overviews on 27.43% in June 2025, up from 3.93% in January 2025. Featured snippets fell from 15.41% to 5.53% over the same months 2. Ahrefs notes that the snippet decline correlates strongly with AI Overview growth, and adds that correlation is not causation 2. This is one vendor's sample, and other vendors report different shares.

On eligibility, Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Search with a snippet to appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode. It adds that no extra technical requirements or special optimisations are needed 3. That is a floor, not a promise of a citation.

What did an AI agent search for when we asked about this?

On 20 October 2026 we asked a Claude agent with a web search tool 'what are featured snippets and how do they relate to AI answers'. It ran 7 searches, listed in our Query Fan-Out Explorer 8. One run on one day is an illustration, not a pattern.

The agent turned one question into seven needs: a definition, a comparison with AI Overviews, how to win a snippet, click data, whether snippet pages are cited by AI, how to opt out, and examples. It added a year to the click search. Of the 8 sites it listed, only one was Google's own help site. The rest were SEO tools and agencies, so we read Google's pages directly.

Do snippet winners get cited by AI, and what happens to clicks?

We found no published study that isolates featured snippet pages and checks how often AI Overviews cite them. Treat any claim of a fixed overlap with caution. The closest evidence is about rankings in general: in Ahrefs' March 2026 sample of 863,000 keyword results pages and 4 million AI Overview URLs, 37.9% of cited URLs sat in the organic top 10, 31.2% came from positions 11 to 100 and 31.0% from beyond 100 5. Ahrefs suggests query fan-out explains the shift, and says that is its inference 5.

Clicks fell where answers appeared on the page. Ahrefs found the top result's click-through rate was 58% lower on keywords with an AI Overview, comparing December 2023 with December 2025. It reads as correlation, and Ahrefs says other features such as featured snippets also played a part in the wider decline 6. Answer boxes can satisfy a reader without a visit.

So the aim changes. A snippet or citation is a way to be named and trusted, and the click is a bonus. Measure enquiries and branded searches, not only visits.

How do you write an answer that can earn a snippet?

Put the question as a heading and the answer in the first sentence under it. Google's AI guide says you do not need to write in a special way for generative AI search, and it recommends headings that give clear structure 7. The same plain habits suit snippets.

Here is a worked example for a made-up firm, Example Plumbing. Use it as a pattern, not as wording to copy.

  • List your ten most important buyer questions and give each one its own heading.
  • Answer in 40 to 60 words straight after the heading, before any story or background.
  • Use a numbered list for steps and a real table for comparisons.
  • Check the search results page for each question and see what shape Google shows now.
  • Run each answer through the free Answer Block Checker. Our guide on writing answer-first introductions covers the pattern.
Paragraph answer pattern (invented example)
  • ## How long does an Example Plumbing quote take?
  • Example Plumbing sends a fixed-price quote within one working day of a site visit. The visit takes about an hour. Quotes list parts, labour and the date work can start.
  • Then add: one table of quote types, and a short list of what to prepare before the visit.

How do you opt out of featured snippets without hurting yourself?

Use the nosnippet rule to block featured and regular snippets for a page. Text marked with data-nosnippet is excluded from both. Lowering max-snippet makes featured snippets less likely, but Google warns it does not guarantee they stop 1.

The same controls reach AI features. Google says nosnippet also prevents content from being used as direct input for AI Overviews and AI Mode, and max-snippet limits how much may be used 4. The cost is a bare result with no description, so most businesses should not use them on pages meant to win customers. Use them on pages that hold private or paid material.

Changes take effect after Google recrawls the page, which Google says can take from several days to several months 3.

Frequently asked questions

Can I mark my page up to get a featured snippet?

No. Google says site owners cannot mark a page as a featured snippet, and that its systems decide whether a page makes a good one 1. Schema does not switch it on. Clear question headings and direct answers are the controllable part.

Are featured snippets disappearing?

They are rarer in at least one large sample. Ahrefs saw them fall from 15.41% to 5.53% of US desktop results pages between January and June 2025 while AI Overviews grew 2. Other vendors measure different shares, so use the direction, not the exact figure.

Do I need a featured snippet to appear in AI Overviews?

No. Google says a page needs to be indexed and eligible to be shown with a snippet, and no extra optimisation is required 3. Ahrefs found 62.1% of cited URLs came from outside the organic top 10 5.

Will a featured snippet bring me more clicks?

Not reliably. Ahrefs found the top result's click-through rate was 58% lower where an AI Overview appeared, and it notes snippets and other features also affect clicks 6. Judge snippets by enquiries and brand searches too.

How do I stop my page appearing as a featured snippet?

Add nosnippet for a dependable block. A low max-snippet makes snippets less likely but may not stop them 1. These rules also limit use in AI Overviews and AI Mode 4, so apply them only where you accept a bare result.
