What Is Conversational Search?
Conversational search is finding information by asking in full sentences and then following up, as you would with a person. Tools such as ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI Mode work this way. Google says AI Mode lets people go deeper through follow-up questions, and Search Console reports each follow-up as a new query 14. Write pages that answer the next question too.
- It means plain-language questions, then follow-ups that build on earlier answers, instead of a string of separate keyword searches.
- Search Console reports each follow-up in AI Mode as a new query, so one chat can create several chances to be cited 4.
- Google says no special writing is needed for generative AI search, so write clearly for people 6.
- Plan the chain of questions a buyer asks, then give each its own clear section on your page.
What is conversational search?
Conversational search is searching by dialogue. You ask a full question in your own words, read the answer, and then ask a follow-up that depends on what you just read. The system keeps the earlier turns in mind, so you do not repeat yourself.
Compare two ways to find an accountant. In classic search you might type "accountant small business Leeds", scan ten links, and start again with new keywords. In conversational search you might write "I run a six-person design studio and my bookkeeping is a mess, who can help?" and then follow up with "what would that cost?" and "how do I check they are qualified?".
The term is a descriptive label used across the industry, not a single product or official standard. Chat assistants and Google's AI Mode are the main places you meet it.
How does conversational search work behind the scenes?
At each turn, the assistant decides whether it needs to look anything up. Anthropic's documentation for Claude's web search tool says Claude searches when a request depends on current, changing or outside information, and answers directly for conversational turns and stable knowledge 7. OpenAI says the model can choose to search the web or not based on the prompt 8.
When it searches, it may run several queries. Google calls this query fan-out. For AI Mode it describes issuing multiple related searches at the same time across subtopics and data sources, then combining them into one response 1. Our page on query fan-out explains this step in detail.
On 20 October 2026 we gave this question to Claude with a web search tool. It ran two searches: "what is conversational search" and "optimize content for conversational queries". Example only: one run on one day.
How is conversational search different from keyword search?
Three things change. Questions get longer and more specific, follow-ups carry context, and the output is a written answer with links, not a list of blue links. Google said on 20 May 2025 that people are asking more complex, longer and multimodal questions, and that AI Mode lets them go deeper through follow-up questions 2. It gave no figures for query length, and we did not find a reliable independent number, so we do not quote one.
Buyers have adopted this style. Forrester reported on 22 January 2026 that 94 percent of business buyers use AI in their buying process, up from 89 percent a year earlier. Twice as many buyers in its 2025 survey named generative AI or conversational search as a more meaningful source of information than any other source 5. That is a survey of business buyers, so it may not describe your customers.
| Feature | Keyword search | Conversational search |
|---|---|---|
| Input | A few words | A full sentence or paragraph with background |
| Follow-up | A new, separate search | A question that builds on the last answer |
| Result | A list of pages | A written answer with links |
| Your job | Rank a page for a phrase | Be the clear source for a step in the chain |
| How you measure | Rankings and clicks | Citations, mentions and clicks |
What happens to my content when someone asks a follow-up?
In Search Console reporting, a follow-up in AI Mode is essentially a new query, with its own impressions, position and clicks 4. Clicks on external links in AI Mode count as clicks 4. That suggests each turn is a separate chance to be cited, though Google does not document how sources are chosen per turn.
This changes what a good page does. It is not enough to answer the opening question. The buyer's next three questions are also chances for your site to be cited, or for a competitor to be cited instead. If your page covers the cost, the checks and the risks, you can appear at each step.
- Turn 1: "I manage a 40-person office and our cleaning contract is up for renewal, where do I start?" -> section: How do commercial cleaning contracts work?
- Turn 2: "What would that cost?" -> section: What does commercial cleaning cost, and what changes the price?
- Turn 3: "How do I know they are reliable?" -> section: Which accreditations and insurance should a cleaner hold?
- Turn 4: "What should I have ready before the first call?" -> section: A one-page checklist for the first call
How do I optimise content for conversational queries?
Start from the buyer's chain, not a single keyword. Google's guidance is blunt that you do not need to write in a special way for generative AI search, and that its systems understand synonyms and meaning 6. So the goal is clear writing that answers real questions, not a rewrite into chatty phrases.
Use the steps below on your most important page. Our guides on finding questions people ask ChatGPT and doing query fan-out research show how to collect the real questions.
- Write down the first question a buyer asks and the next three. Use customer calls and sales emails, not guesses.
- Give each question its own section with a heading in the buyer's words.
- Start each section with the answer in one or two sentences, as in BLUF writing, then the reason.
- Make each section self-contained, in the spirit of atomic content, so it works when quoted alone.
- Include the facts a follow-up needs: prices, time frames, qualifications, limits and next steps.
- Check the result by typing your chain into two or three assistants and noting who is cited at each turn.
What do people get wrong about conversational search?
The first myth is that you must write like a chatbot. Google says there is no need for a special style for generative AI search 6. Stiff question-and-answer pages for every phrase can also read badly, and Google's guide warns against separate content for every variation of how people might search 6.
The second myth is that you can control the conversation. You cannot. The assistant picks the searches and the sources, and a repeat of the same prompt may differ. Plan for a range of likely paths.
The third myth is that conversational search needs new technical files. Google states that no new machine-readable files, AI text files or special markup are needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode 3.
What an AI assistant searches when it answers this
We gave the question below to AI search tools and recorded the web searches they ran behind the scenes. This is called query fan-out. Each phrase is a page you could publish to be found and cited.

Frequently asked questions
What is conversational search in simple terms?
It is searching by chat. You ask a full question, read the answer, and ask a follow-up that builds on it. Chat assistants and Google AI Mode work this way, and Google says AI Mode lets people go deeper through follow-up questions 2.
How do I optimise for conversational queries?
List the questions a buyer asks in order, give each a clear section with the answer first, and include the facts a follow-up needs. Google says no special writing for generative AI search is required 6, so clarity matters more than phrasing tricks.
Is each follow-up a new search for Google?
In AI Mode, yes for reporting purposes. Search Console help says a follow-up is essentially a new query, and its impressions, position and clicks count toward that new query 4.
Should I write my content as questions and answers?
Use question headings where buyers really ask them, and answer first. Do not turn every page into a long list of questions. Google warns against creating separate content for every search variation mainly to manipulate results 6.
Do I need a chatbot on my own site?
Not for AI search visibility. Conversational search describes how buyers use outside assistants. A chatbot on your site is a separate product decision, so choose it on its own merits.
