What Are AI Search Engines and Which Ones Matter?
AI search engines answer a question with a written summary and cite the web pages behind it, instead of listing ten links. The ones that matter most for businesses today are Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot and Claude. Each finds and cites sources in a slightly different way.
- Google's AI features and ChatGPT have the largest audiences; Perplexity, Copilot and Claude are smaller but cite sources openly.
- Usage numbers come from different surveys and company statements, so they cannot be added together or ranked precisely.
- Most tools search the web in real time, often several times per question, then write a cited answer.
- Start by testing your own buyer questions in three or four tools, then focus on the ones that matter to your buyers.
What is an AI search engine?
An AI search engine takes a question in everyday language and answers it in a few paragraphs, with links to sources. The answer is written by a language model, which is software trained on large amounts of text.
Perplexity's help centre describes the pattern: the tool uses AI to search the internet in real time, compiles the most relevant insights, and attaches numbered citations that link to the original sources 1.
The key difference from classic search is that the user may never see a list of results. The sources your business needs to appear in are the ones the model picks.
How do AI search engines find their answers?
In OpenAI's API documentation, the model chooses whether to search based on the prompt, and answers include inline citations while a separate sources list shows every URL consulted 2.
Anthropic's API documentation says Claude searches when a request depends on current, changing or outside-training information, and suggests simple factual questions typically need 1 to 3 searches while comparative research can use 10 or more; that is guidance for setting a search cap, not a measured average 3. The consumer apps may differ. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode may use query fan-out, which means issuing multiple related searches across subtopics 4.
So one buyer question can become many searches. Your page can be picked for any of those sub-questions, not only for the original wording.
How many people use each one?
Google and ChatGPT are the two to test first. The numbers below differ by source, so read them as rough scale, not a league table.
In a July 2026 survey of 5,067 US adults, Menlo Ventures found 64% had used AI in the past six months. Among AI users, ChatGPT reached 60%, Gemini 58% and Claude 20% 5.
Alphabet said on 22 July 2026 that Google AI Mode had passed 1 billion monthly active users and the Gemini app had 950 million 6. In February 2026 it said AI Mode queries were three times longer than traditional searches, and nearly one in six were voice or image 7.
StatCounter's September 2026 chart of worldwide AI chatbot market share shows ChatGPT at 80.48%, Gemini 10.91%, Perplexity 5.85%, Copilot 1.79% and Claude 0.95% 8. It does not define its metric on that page, and its numbers conflict with Menlo's survey.
How do the main AI search engines differ?
The table below compares the six that most business owners ask about. The 'what to know' column sticks to what each company says in its own documentation. Microsoft describes Copilot Search as blending traditional and generative search and citing sources prominently 17, and its Bing Webmaster Tools now report how often a site is cited in Copilot answers 18.
| Engine | How it answers | Bot or agent names | What to know |
|---|---|---|---|
| Google AI Overviews and AI Mode | Summaries inside Google Search, with fan-out searches | Googlebot; Google-Extended controls Gemini training and grounding use, not Search inclusion | No extra requirement beyond being indexed and eligible for a snippet |
| ChatGPT | Chooses whether to search; cites sources inline | OAI-SearchBot, GPTBot, ChatGPT-User | Opting out of OAI-SearchBot removes you from ChatGPT search answers |
| Gemini | Grounds answers with Google Search queries it writes | Google systems | Uses one or more generated searches per answer |
| Perplexity | Real-time search with numbered citations | PerplexityBot, Perplexity-User | Perplexity-User generally ignores robots.txt |
| Microsoft Copilot | Blends traditional and generative search | Bing systems | Bing Webmaster Tools reports citations |
| Claude | Decides when to search; cites results | ClaudeBot, Claude-User, Claude-SearchBot | Three separate bots with different jobs |
Do they behave differently when choosing sources?
Yes, and the differences change often. Semrush tracked more than 230,000 prompts from July to October 2025. Semrush listed Reddit and Wikipedia as the most cited in ChatGPT search; its AI Mode list began LinkedIn, YouTube, Reddit; its Perplexity list began Reddit, LinkedIn, NIH 9. Ahrefs found that in September 2026, YouTube and Reddit were the two most-cited domains in Google AI Overviews 10.
These are citation patterns across general queries, not rules for your industry. A study run by a tool vendor also reflects the prompts that vendor chose.
Treat the lists as a reason to test, not a plan. The only reliable check is to run your own buyer questions in each tool.
What do AI search engines need from your site?
They need to be able to read it. OpenAI documents three separate agents: OAI-SearchBot surfaces sites in ChatGPT search and OpenAI recommends allowing it, GPTBot relates to training, and ChatGPT-User handles user-initiated visits 11. Anthropic lists ClaudeBot, Claude-User and Claude-SearchBot 12.
Google says no special markup or files are needed for its generative AI features 13. For Microsoft, crawlability, metadata and internal linking stay essential 14.
Check what your own robots.txt does with the AI crawler checker, and read AI crawlers for what each bot does.
Which AI search engines should you focus on?
Focus on the two or three your buyers use. For most consumer businesses that means Google's AI features and ChatGPT. For professional buyers it may add Copilot, because it sits inside Microsoft products, and Perplexity or Claude for research-heavy users. That last point is our judgement, not measured data.
Use a simple test. Write ten questions a buyer would ask before choosing you. Run each in four tools. Record whether you are named, cited or absent, and who is named instead.
Our AI search engines compared page goes deeper on citations, and what AI SEO is covers the whole practice.
What mistakes do people make comparing AI engines?
One is that there is a single AI ranking you can optimise for. Each tool retrieves differently, and results vary from one run to the next. Another is that blocking AI bots keeps you safe. Blocking OAI-SearchBot removes you from ChatGPT search answers, and user-initiated bots may ignore robots.txt anyway 11.
A third is that you must pay for a tool before you can learn anything. A spreadsheet with ten prompts and a monthly check gives you a baseline at no cost.
Frequently asked questions
Which AI search engine is the biggest?
It depends on the measure. Alphabet says AI Mode passed 1 billion monthly active users, ChatGPT has the largest share in StatCounter's chatbot chart, and Menlo's survey puts ChatGPT reach at 60% of US AI users against Gemini at 58%. No single number settles it.
Is Google an AI search engine now?
Partly. Google still runs classic search, but AI Overviews and AI Mode add written answers with links. Google says there are no additional requirements to appear in them beyond normal indexing and snippet eligibility. Search Console counts clicks from those features inside overall web traffic.
Do I need to optimise for each AI engine separately?
Mostly no. Clear, crawlable, factual pages help across all of them. Test your key questions in each, then fix gaps one at a time. Some access settings are per bot, such as robots.txt rules for OAI-SearchBot or PerplexityBot.
Are AI search engines accurate?
Not always. They can misread or mis-summarise sources, and Ahrefs found ChatGPT cited broken URLs 2.38% of the time in one test 15. Always open the cited source when a decision matters, and check how AI describes your own business.
How do I see which AI engines send me visitors?
In GA4, the AI Assistant channel excludes Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, which count as Organic Search 19. Some AI visits arrive with no referrer and look like direct traffic, so expect an undercount.
