AI SEO in Malaysia: How to Get Recommended by ChatGPT and Google AI
To be recommended by ChatGPT and Google AI search in Malaysia, publish answer-first pages in Malay and English, with Mandarin or Tamil only where your buyers use them. Let OAI-SearchBot and Googlebot read your site, keep your business details identical everywhere, state any halal certification you hold, and follow the amended Personal Data Protection Act on every form.
- Google gave 91.27% of Malaysia's search referrals in September 2026, with Bing at 5.62%, enough to justify setting up Bing Webmaster Tools.
- Google's e-Conomy SEA report says Malaysians show the greatest appetite for AI-powered decision-making in ASEAN.
- Microsoft puts Malaysian generative AI use at 22.6% of people aged 15 to 64 in June 2026, near the 18.8% world figure.
- The amended PDPA added data-protection-officer and breach-notification duties from 1 June 2025.
- Chalk Labs has no published Malaysian result. Its only regional proof is Meru Trophy in Bengaluru, India.
How do people in Malaysia find businesses with search and AI?
Malaysians search on phones with Google and are adopting AI tools quickly. DataReportal counted 35.4 million internet users in October 2025, which is 98.0% of the population, and 44.0 million mobile connections, or 122% of the population 2.
Google supplied 91.27% of search referrals in September 2026. Bing held 5.62%, Yahoo 1.94% and Yandex 0.68% 1. Bing's 5.62% is small but large enough to justify setting up Bing Webmaster Tools.
Microsoft's AI Economy Institute estimates that 22.6% of Malaysians aged 15 to 64 had used a generative AI product by June 2026, up from 21.8% in March, against 18.8% worldwide 3. That is a middle position: AI use is real, but well below Singapore at 64.3% 3.
Market snapshot: Malaysia

| Mobile connections (end of 2025) | 44.0 million, 122% of the population2 |
| Google share of search referrals (September 2026) | 91.27%; Bing 5.62%; Yahoo 1.94%1 |
| Generative AI use, ages 15 to 64 (June 2026) | 22.6%, up from 21.8% in March; world 18.8%3 |
| Digital economy (2025 estimate) | About US$39 billion GMV; e-commerce about US$20 billion4 |
| Tourist arrivals (2024) | About 25 million, with a 45 million target for Visit Malaysia 20264 |
| Willingness to share data with AI agents | 92%, with 60% privacy concerns (ASEAN-10 survey)4 |
| Public data on Malay versus English AI prompts | None found |
Microsoft estimates 22.6% of Malaysians aged 15 to 64 used generative AI by June 2026, against 18.8% worldwide 3. Google's e-Conomy report says Malaysians show the strongest appetite for AI-powered decision-making in ASEAN 4.
Why do Malaysian buyers lean on AI to decide?
Because they say they trust it for choices. Google, Temasek and Bain's e-Conomy SEA 2025 report states that Malaysians display the greatest appetite for AI-powered decision-making in the region, and it reports that 92% of Malaysian respondents are willing to share data access with AI agents 4. Saving time on research and comparisons was the top reason to use or pay for AI features, at 51% 4.
The report also notes that 60% had privacy concerns about agentic AI, against an ASEAN-10 average of 50% 4. The survey covered 7,200 consumers across ASEAN-10, and the report does not give the Malaysian sub-sample, so read these figures as signals, not exact counts 4.
The same report values Malaysia's digital economy at about US$39 billion in 2025, with e-commerce at about US$20 billion 4. It also says Malaysia welcomed roughly 25 million tourist arrivals in 2024 and is aiming at a 45 million visitor target for Visit Malaysia 2026 4. Tourism and e-commerce are large parts of this economy, so quotable pages with prices, hours and policies are worth building first.
Should your pages be in Malay, English or both?
Write in Malay and English for most consumer services, and add Mandarin or Tamil only for services with proven demand. Malay is the national language under Article 152 of the constitution. English is widely understood in cities and many businesses transact in it, and federal and state laws must be enacted in both Malay and English 5.
Wikipedia counts 137 living languages in Malaysia, and lists Hokkien, Hakka, Cantonese, Teochew and Tamil among the main ones 5. Online buyers also mix languages in one search. The page notes Manglish and Bahasa Rojak as informal mixes, and the government discourages Manglish 5. Write your pages in standard Malay or standard English, not in the mix.
Google lists Malaysia among AI Overviews locations, and both Malay and English are on its supported-language list 6. Give each language its own URL and link the versions with hreflang. Google ignores the tags unless each page points to the other 8.
| Buyer writes | Example | What to publish |
|---|---|---|
| English | best dental clinic in Petaling Jaya | An English page with the answer first and the area named |
| Malay | klinik gigi terbaik di Petaling Jaya | A separate Malay page, written by a native reader, not machine-translated |
| Mixed Malay and English | klinik gigi murah PJ | No page needed. Use both words and the short place name in the text |
| Mandarin | 八打灵牙科诊所推荐 | A Mandarin page only if Chinese-speaking customers are a real share of your business |
How should halal and other local questions shape your pages?
Answer the trust question directly. For food, cosmetics, travel and hospitality, buyers often ask whether something is halal, so state your status in the first lines of the page. If you hold a certificate, name the issuing body and the certificate number, and show its expiry date.
If you do not hold one, do not use the word as a marketing claim. Halal logo use and claims are regulated by the Malaysian halal authorities. Use only a certificate you hold, and confirm the current logo and wording rules with your certifying body before you publish. The same advice applies to other regulated claims, such as health, finance and education.
Add the other facts buyers ask for in Malaysia: opening hours across prayer times, parking, whether staff speak Malay, English or Mandarin, and prices in ringgit. Each is a short, quotable fact that an AI can lift into an answer.
What do Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT need from a Malaysian site?
Malaysian pages need crawlable, indexed text that can be quoted. Google lists no extra requirement for AI Overviews or AI Mode beyond snippet eligibility, and structured data should match the visible text 7.
For ChatGPT, allow OpenAI's OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt. OpenAI says opted-out sites are not shown in its answers, and changes take about 24 hours 9. The free AI Crawler Checker tests your robots.txt, and our guide to optimising a local business for AI search covers listings.
What do Malaysia's data-protection changes mean for your pages?
The Personal Data Protection Act 2010 (PDPA) now carries newer duties, so check every form and mailing list. The Personal Data Protection (Amendment) Act 2024 took effect in stages during 2025. The cross-border transfer changes started on 1 April 2025, and the data protection officer and breach-notification duties started on 1 June 2025 10.
Controllers must appoint a data protection officer where processing involves more than 20,000 data subjects, sensitive data on more than 10,000 people, or regular and systematic monitoring 10. The Commissioner must be told of breaches likely to cause significant harm, including those affecting more than 1,000 people 10. Violations are criminal offences, and officers can be liable subject to a due diligence defence 10. The Act covers data in respect of commercial transactions 10.
This page is not legal advice, and DLA Piper expected further guidelines in 2026, so check whether they have been issued 10. Ask a Malaysian lawyer about consent for mailing lists, and add a plain privacy notice in Malay and English to every form.
How does Malaysia differ from the worldwide picture?
It differs in language mix and in how much buyers say they trust AI to choose for them. Compared with the Singapore page, where English leads, Malaysian pages need Malay quality first. Compared with the Indonesia page, the market is smaller, and Bing's 5.62% share means Bing Webmaster Tools deserve a short setup session 1.
Actual AI use, at 22.6%, is only a little above the worldwide 18.8%, so classic Google visibility still carries most of the traffic 3. The guide to writing pages for several languages explains how to keep versions apart.
What has Chalk Labs actually done in Malaysia?
Nothing we have published. Chalk Labs has no Malaysian client case or result, and this page does not imply one. Our only published regional result is Meru Trophy, a trophy shop in Bengaluru, India, which reached 27,300 Google clicks and 2.3 million impressions in 16 months 11.
The Meru result is English-language local search in India. Malaysia adds Malay and Mandarin queries, which we have not tested, so we would run 10 prompts in each language before drawing any conclusion. We do not guarantee rankings or citations.
Where should you start this month?
Start with access and identity, publish five answer pages, then measure. One four-week loop shows what works.
- Week 1: confirm robots.txt allows OAI-SearchBot and Googlebot, and test your top pages on a phone.
- Week 2: make your business name, address, phone and hours identical on your site and Google Business Profile, and state any halal certificate details.
- Week 3: publish five pages: one halal or certification page, one service page in Malay, the same in English, one price page in ringgit, and one opening hours and prayer-time page. The answer block checker tests each opening.
- Week 4: add a Malay and English privacy notice to your forms, run ten buyer prompts in ChatGPT and Google, and note the date, brands named and domains cited.
- Afterwards, use the Countries tab of Search Console's Performance report to see Malaysian clicks 12, and ask each new lead how they found you.
Rules and platforms that shape results
Rules to know
- Personal Data Protection Act 2010, amended 2024. Cross-border changes from 1 April 2025. Data protection officer and breach notification from 1 June 2025. Violations are criminal offences, and officers can be liable subject to due diligence. Covers data in commercial transactions.10
- Halal and sector claims. Halal logo use and claims are regulated by the Malaysian halal authorities. Use only a certificate you hold and confirm the current rules with your certifying body. Not independently verified against the official text.

- Add ringgit prices, opening hours and language spoken to each service page.
Mistakes to avoid
- Machine-translating Malay pages and leaving them unchecked by a native reader.
- Writing pages in Manglish or Bahasa Rojak, which the government discourages.
- Using the word halal without a certificate to back it.
- Ignoring Bing completely, though it holds 5.62% of referrals.
- Collecting form data without a privacy notice, now that the amended PDPA duties apply.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need Malay pages to appear in AI answers in Malaysia?
Write Malay pages for consumer services, because Malay is the national language and buyers search in it. Add English for business buyers and expatriates. No public data splits Malaysian AI prompts by language, so test both and link versions with hreflang.
Does Bing matter in Malaysia?
A little. Bing held 5.62% of search referrals in September 2026, while Google held 91.27% 1. Set up Bing Webmaster Tools, but keep Google first.
What changed in the Malaysian PDPA?
The 2024 amendment added data protection officer and breach-notification duties from 1 June 2025, and changed cross-border transfer rules from 1 April 2025 10. Check your forms and mailing lists with a Malaysian lawyer.
How big is AI use in Malaysia?
Microsoft estimates 22.6% of people aged 15 to 64 used a generative AI product by June 2026, just above the world figure of 18.8% 3. It counts any generative AI tool, not only ChatGPT.
