AI SEO for Fashion and Apparel
Fashion and apparel brands get recommended by ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews when AI finds clear product facts on their site and consistent mentions elsewhere. Complete the apparel fields in your product feed, publish honest buying guides, earn real reviews and video coverage, back every sustainability claim with evidence, and track a fixed prompt list over months.
- In Profound's 11.84 billion citation study, social and user-generated sites made up a median 16.5% of fashion citations. 1
- Google requires color, gender and age group (and size for clothing and shoes) in free listings, so incomplete feeds miss out. 3
- The FTC says marketers should not make unqualified general environmental claims such as eco-friendly. 2
- Of US adults who use AI, 57.5% had decided not to buy because of chatbot information. 6
- Chalk Labs has no published fashion results. What transfers is the method.
How do shoppers ask AI for sustainable sneakers?
They ask for a ranked list and a values check in the same breath. The seed prompt, 'best sustainable sneaker brands', asks which brands exist, which are better, and which ones are honest about the word 'sustainable'. A brand page that only says 'we care about the planet' answers none of the three.
We found no study of how shoppers use AI to choose sneakers, so we will not invent one. A July 2026 survey of 2,338 US adults found that 65.01% of AI users had at least partly replaced product-related Google searches with chatbots. It also found 57.5% of AI users had decided not to buy after reading chatbot information. The report does not split results by product type 6.
For a related footwear topic, Ahrefs looked at what ChatGPT searched when asked about running shoes. Terms such as 'best' (206 times), 'review' (117) and 'vs' (105) topped the list. About 76% of the most common site: searches targeted brand sites, which Ahrefs reads as a way to check details such as prices and specs 7.
- Prompt: best sustainable sneaker brands
- Question 1, 'best': which brands rank well on fit, comfort and price?
- Question 2, 'sustainable': what exactly is the brand claiming, and can it prove it?
- Question 3, unspoken: where can I read independent opinions before I pay?
- Publish three things: a criteria-based roundup, a plain materials and proof page, and product pages with full specifications.
- Fashion buyers ask for ranked lists with values checks, and AI answers show few links, so being named matters.
- Social and user-generated sources took a median 16.5% of fashion citations, so your video and community presence counts. 1
- Apparel feeds need extra fields, and missing ones can keep products out of free listings. 3
- Sustainability words carry legal risk, so exact claims protect you and give models facts to quote. 2
Where do AI engines get fashion answers from?
Fashion leans more on social and video sources than most industries. Profound analysed 11.84 billion citations across eight AI models between April and July 2026. Brand-owned sites took about 57% of citations overall. Social and user-generated platforms, such as Reddit and YouTube, took a median 16.5% in fashion 1.
That does not mean your own site is optional. Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet to be a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and that no special markup is needed 10. It does mean you cannot win on owned pages alone when shoppers also trust videos and forum threads.
Be cautious with Reddit. In Ahrefs' study of 1.4 million ChatGPT prompts, Reddit URLs were cited only 1.93% of the time they were retrieved 8. Plan for a spread of sources, not one platform.
| Source type | What the evidence says | What a brand can do |
|---|---|---|
| Owned pages | Brand-owned sites were about 57% of citations across all industries 1. | Full product facts, a materials page, sizing help and honest buying guides. |
| Social and video | Median 16.5% of fashion citations 1. | Fit videos, on-body demos and replies to real questions, without faking reviews. |
| Earned coverage | Comparison questions give third parties a bigger share of citations than factual ones 7. | Give editors and reviewers samples and facts they can check. |
| Retail listings | Free listings can show products across Google surfaces 4. | Keep feed data complete and matched to the page. |
How should you word sustainability claims?
State the specific benefit, not the general virtue. The FTC's Green Guides say marketers should not make unqualified general environmental benefit claims, because words like 'eco-friendly' convey a wide range of meanings that are hard to substantiate 2. These are US rules. One example in the Guides: 'made with recycled materials' can be acceptable if the statement is clear, prominent and backed by evidence 2.
Recycled content has its own rule. A marketer may make an unqualified claim only if the whole product, apart from minor parts, is made from recycled material. For a partly recycled item, the claim should clearly show the recycled share by weight 11.
This helps with AI too. A sentence such as 'the upper is [your figure] percent recycled polyester by weight' gives a model a fact to quote and a shopper a figure to check. Use your own real numbers and keep your proof on file. A vague promise gives a model nothing to cite, and may breach the Guides.
What product data does apparel need?
Apparel has extra required fields. For free listings Google requires color, gender and age group on apparel, and size on clothing and shoes 3. For paid Shopping in the US, UK and four other listed countries, color, size, gender and age group are required for apparel 3.
Price and availability must match the landing page, structured data and checkout, and a wrong barcode number (GTIN) causes a product to be disapproved 3. Free listings are on by default in most cases and need shipping settings in listed countries. Return information is recommended 4. Popular Products for apparel is available on mobile in the US only 4. Google says status does not guarantee that products will be shown.
On the page, use Product markup with a name, image and an offer with price and currency. Google's documentation also lists color, material, pattern and size as properties you can add 5. Our product page guide and the Schema Generator help you apply this.
- Name each colour with a plain word, with the main colour first.
- Keep sizes consistent between feed, size chart and page.
- Put materials, care and fit notes in visible text, not only in images.
- Use natural-language page URLs: in Ahrefs' data, search results with them were cited 89.78% of the time against 81.11% without 8. Ahrefs gives no sample sizes, so treat this as a hint, not proof.
How do you write a 'best brands' page that AI will trust?
Show your criteria, include rivals and say what you did not test. A roundup that ranks only your own shoes reads as an advert, so a model has little reason to quote it. Set out five or six criteria such as materials, certifications you can verify, fit range, price and repairability, then score each brand against them.
Add a clear disclosure if you earn from any link. Update the page on a schedule and show the date, because comparison answers lean on sources outside the brand's own site 7. Our guide to writing comparison pages that get cited has a template.
Put a short answer block at the top: your three picks and the one trade-off for each. Then support it with sections that each answer one question, such as 'Which sustainable sneakers suit wide feet?'.
- Brand: [name]
- Materials disclosed: yes or no, with link to the brand's own materials page
- Third-party certification: name it, or write 'none stated'
- Fit range: sizes and widths offered
- Price: current price and currency, with date checked
- Our note: one honest limit, for example 'runs narrow'
How do you measure AI visibility for a fashion brand?
Track a fixed prompt list across two engines and log brand mentions each month. Include category prompts ('best sustainable sneaker brands'), fit prompts and comparison prompts naming your rivals. Our prompt list guide shows how to build one.
Expect fewer clicks per answer. Pew found a result link was clicked in 8% of visits with an AI summary against 15% without, in March 2025 data from 900 US adults 12. Watch branded search, direct visits and orders, and add 'How did you hear about us?' at checkout.
Treat results over months, not days. Google says following its guidance does not guarantee crawling, indexing or serving 10, and we do not guarantee any result.
What has Chalk Labs done in fashion?
We have not published results for fashion or apparel brands. We have no fashion case to show you.
What transfers is the method: query research, answer pages, technical readiness and measurement. Chalk Labs has used it on Meru Trophy, a local commerce site in Bengaluru, and on shilikajain.com, a personal brand. Treat them as proof of the method, not of fashion results.
