AI SEO for Agriculture and Agribusiness
An agribusiness gets recommended by ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews when AI can find pages that match a farmer's crop, acreage, region and water source, plus honest advice and a simple way to ask for a quote. Google adds no special requirements beyond being indexed and snippet-eligible 1. Nobody can promise a placement.
- USDA's 2025 survey found 85% of US farms had internet access and 82% a smartphone. Farmers can be reached online. 2
- In the same survey, 50% of farms used the internet to buy agricultural inputs. 2
- Water-saving claims need care. An unqualified general environmental benefit claim is likely hard to prove. 6
- Subsidy rules change. Link to the official programme and show the date you checked, instead of printing rates.
- Chalk Labs has no published agriculture results. The method transfers; field proof does not exist yet.
How does an agribusiness get recommended by ChatGPT and Google AI Overviews?
An agribusiness gets recommended when AI can find a page that matches the farmer's exact situation and names the company as a fit. Here 'AI' means ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews (AI-written summaries above some results) and Google AI Mode (its chat-style search).
Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet to be a supporting link, and that there are no additional requirements or special optimisations 1. For a supplier, that means pages built around crop, acreage, soil, water and region, not around a product catalogue.
Advice is the edge. A farmer who reads a page that explains how to size a system, and where it can fail, is more likely to trust the supplier who wrote it.
Do farmers use the internet and AI to find suppliers?
Farmers are online, though we found no study of farmers using AI chat to pick a supplier. USDA's August 2025 technology survey found 85% of US farms had internet access, 82% had a smartphone and 74% could go online through a cellular data plan 2.
The same survey says 50% of farms used the internet to buy agricultural inputs in 2025 and 29% used it to market their products 2. So the web is already a buying channel. How much of that now starts in an AI assistant is not measured. These figures are for the US, and the programme example later is India's PMKSY. Rules and farm habits differ by country, and we have not sourced other countries.
What do AI engines look at when a farm supplier is involved?
They look for pages that answer the small questions inside a big one. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode may run several related searches across subtopics, called query fan-out 1. Ahrefs found ChatGPT ran about 1.6 searches per answer that used the web, and only 14.4% of free, logged-out responses searched at all 7.
For comparison questions such as 'best system for X', 46.4% of ChatGPT citations went to official sites, against 63.4% for factual questions 7. So trade press, extension pages and dealer lists count too. The table is a modelled example, not observed data.
| Sub-question a farmer may ask | Page that answers it | Facts to show |
|---|---|---|
| What does a drip system for vegetables include? | Components guide | Pump, filter, pressure regulator, lateral lines, emitters |
| Will it suit my water source? | Water quality and filtration page | Borewell, canal or tank; clogging risk; filter type |
| How do I size it for 5 acres? | Sizing worksheet | Crop spacing, field shape, slope, pressure, flow |
| Can I get a subsidy? | Subsidy and incentives page | Link to the official scheme, date checked |
| Who installs and services it near me? | Regional dealer page | Districts served, service visits, spare parts |
What questions do farmers ask AI about equipment?
Farmers ask by crop, acreage, region and problem. The first prompt below is this page's buyer seed. The related prompts are modelled by us and were not observed.
Each prompt hides a constraint, such as the water source, the crop spacing or the budget. Pages that state those constraints are easiest to match.
- best drip irrigation system for a 5 acre vegetable farm -> sizing guide with a system layout for a 5 acre plot
- drip irrigation filter for borewell water with sand -> water quality and filtration page
- how much does drip irrigation cost per acre and is there a subsidy -> cost factors page plus incentives page
- drip vs sprinkler for tomatoes and chillies -> method comparison page with a decision rule
What should an agribusiness publish first?
Publish one sizing guide for your most common farm profile. For example: a 5 acre vegetable plot, about 2 hectares, on borewell water. Open with a two-sentence answer, list the components in a table, show a layout drawing and end with a quote or call-back form.
Then add crop pages and regional pages, but only with real content. A page about tomatoes in one district should carry local soil, water and season notes written or reviewed by someone who knows them. A copy with the district name swapped is a doorway page.
Make contact easy on a phone. USDA found most farms use smartphones 2, so a tap-to-call button and a short form beat a long enquiry page. If you sell products with prices, Google supports product markup on pages about a single product and requires a name plus a review, rating or offer 8. Do not mark up reviews you do not have.
Which claim limits and programmes should an agribusiness mention?
Water-saving claims must be honest. Drip irrigation has the potential to save water and nutrients, but in very dry areas the benefit may be higher output and not less water use 3. Wikipedia, used here as background, also notes that poor design or filtration can cause clogging, and that in badly designed systems upkeep can cost more than the water saved 3.
The FTC's Green Guides say it is deceptive to misrepresent that a product or service offers a general environmental benefit, and that marketers should not make unqualified general environmental benefit claims 6. So write 'reduces water use compared with flood irrigation on this crop, under these conditions' only if you can show the evidence, and avoid 'eco-friendly'.
Programmes change often, so link to the official source and show the date. In the US, the USDA's EQIP gives farmers financial and technical help with conservation practices, including irrigation efficiency 4. In India, the PMKSY scheme has a Per Drop More Crop micro irrigation component with its own guidelines 5. We could not confirm current subsidy rates, so this page states none. Ask your regulator or extension office before printing rates.
Do not mass-produce pages. Google defines doorway abuse as pages made to rank for similar searches that lead users to less useful pages 9. This page covers irrigation and general supplies. Seeds, fertilisers and crop-protection products carry separate labelling rules that we have not covered.
How do you measure whether it is working?
Count calls, messages and quote requests, not mentions. Many farm enquiries arrive by phone, so give whoever picks up a one-line script: 'How did you hear about us?' Dealers and field staff can log the answer too, and the form should ask the same.
Then run a fixed set of 5 buyer prompts on two AI engines, three runs each, every month. Log whether you are named and which page is cited. Answers vary between runs, so count a prompt as won only when you appear in more than half of its runs. What have Chalk Labs and Rahil Jain done in agriculture, and what have they not?
Chalk Labs has not published results for an agriculture business. What transfers is the method: query research, answer pages, technical readiness and measurement. It is the method behind Meru Trophy, a Bengaluru trophy shop, and shilikajain.com, a personal brand. Both are very different from farm supply.
Chalk Labs sells this service, so weigh our view accordingly. The advice here rests mainly on the public sources cited.
Your first 90 days
Days 1-30
- Write 20 farmer prompts and run 5 of them three times on two AI engines.
- Check that product and advice pages are indexed and load fast on a phone.
- Add a 'How did you hear about us?' step to calls and forms.
- Pick the farm profile you serve best, by crop, acreage and region.
Days 31-60
- Publish the sizing guide for that profile, with a layout and components table.
- Publish a water quality and filtration page.
- Publish a subsidy page that links to the official programme with a checked date.
Days 61-90
- Re-run the same prompts and compare with the baseline.
- Add one crop page and one regional dealer page with local detail.
- Review call and quote sources and fix the weakest page.
The first pages to publish
- Sizing guide for a common farm profile. Matches 'best system for my farm' directly.
- System components explained. Defines the parts so AI can quote them.
- Water source and filtration guide. Clogging is a top risk, so buyers ask early.
- Method comparison, such as drip vs sprinkler. Captures the choice before the brand.
- Subsidies and incentives with checked dates. Cost support drives many decisions.
- Crop pages with local notes. Ties the product to the farmer's crop.
- Regional dealer and service page. Matches 'near me' questions.
- Cost factors page. Honest drivers beat a made-up price.
- About page with team and contact details. Confirms the company is real and gives AI an entity to cite.
Trust signals and risks
What AI looks for
- Layouts and sizing examples for real farm profiles
- Named dealers, districts served and service response times
- Photos of installed systems with permission from the farmer
- Advice reviewed by an agronomist or irrigation engineer, named
- Clear warranty and spare parts terms
- Consistent company and dealer details across the web

Results we can show
These are Chalk Labs' own search results. They are not a forecast for your site: results depend on your market, competition and starting point.
How to read these numbers
Chalk Labs reports them from Google Search Console data. We cannot publish the raw console. The shilikajain.com site belongs to Shilika Jain, a Chalk Labs co-founder, so treat it as a demonstration on our own network and not as an independent client result. Meru Trophy is a client of Chalk Labs.
Frequently asked questions
Do farm suppliers need special schema or an llms.txt file to be cited by AI?
No. Google says there are no additional requirements or special optimisations for AI Overviews or AI Mode beyond being indexed and snippet-eligible 1. Clear sizing guides, honest claims and an easy phone or form contact matter more than any file.
Do farmers actually research suppliers online?
Many do. USDA found 85% of US farms had internet access in 2025 and 50% used the internet to buy agricultural inputs 2. That survey covers the US only. How many start in an AI assistant is not measured, so track your own leads.
Can I say my drip system saves water?
Should I print subsidy rates on my site?
How fast will calls and quotes arrive?
Nobody can promise when the first call will come, and we hold no agriculture case data. Plan in months, measure calls and quote requests, and treat AI mentions as a leading signal only. Seasonal buying also means results may bunch before planting.
