How Much Traffic Does ChatGPT Send to Websites?
Very little, so far. In Ahrefs' September 2026 benchmark of 115,254 sites, ChatGPT sent 0.34% of traffic and all AI assistants together sent 0.43%, against 23.96% for Google. Other studies find about one visit in a hundred. These counts are a floor, because AI visits often arrive without a referrer and are filed as direct traffic. 1312
- Ahrefs' September 2026 benchmark found ChatGPT sent 0.34% of traffic, all AI assistants 0.43%, and Google 23.96%.
- Other studies range from about 0.12% to 0.21% of traffic (Ahrefs samples) up to 1.08% (enterprise sites), and under 1% for publishers.
- ChatGPT sends most AI referrals, but every count is a floor, because some AI visits are filed as direct traffic.
- Growth is real but starts from a small base, and vendor studies suggest higher conversion per visit, on narrow samples.
- Measure citations and self-reported enquiries as well as clicks, because a click count misses AI influence.
How much traffic does ChatGPT send to websites?
Very little. In Ahrefs' September 2026 benchmark of 115,254 sites, ChatGPT sent 0.34% of traffic, and all AI assistants together sent 0.43%. Google sent 23.96% from the same sites. 1 That is about 70 times more from Google than from ChatGPT, by our arithmetic.
Other studies land in the same range. The table sets them side by side with the date and sample, because the definitions differ. Treat each figure as one measurement, not as the truth.

Why does ChatGPT send so little traffic?
Because it answers inside the chat. Ahrefs' own explanation is that Google connects people to websites, while ChatGPT keeps them in the conversation. Ahrefs also estimates ChatGPT's click-through rate at 96% below Google's. That is the author's estimate from his own sorting of searches, not a measured figure. 2
Usage is large. OpenAI's own paper says ChatGPT reached 700 million users sending 18 billion messages a week by July 2025. 10 Ahrefs puts ChatGPT at about 12% of Google's search volume, using 2.5 billion daily prompts, 65% of them search-like, against Google's 13.7 billion daily searches. The 12% is an estimate, and the author says it depends on how you define search. 2
ChatGPT also searches the web for only some prompts. Semrush found web search was enabled on 34.5% of ChatGPT queries in February 2026, down from 46% in late 2024. 9 Semrush's article notes that most responses then rely on training data alone, which means no sources to link.
Crawlers show the same imbalance from the other side. Cloudflare reported that OpenAI's crawl-to-refer ratio reached as much as 3,700 to 1 in March 2025, while Perplexity's stayed below 200 to 1 from September. 16 The ratio compares how often a bot fetches a site with how often the platform sends a visitor back.
Is ChatGPT traffic growing?
Yes, from a small base. Semrush's US clickstream panel shows outbound referral traffic from ChatGPT up 206% when comparing January 2025 with January 2026. 9 Microsoft Clarity found AI-platform referrals to publisher sites grew 155.6% in eight months, against 24.0% for search. 6 Semrush adds that ChatGPT's own overall traffic plateaued around November 2025. 9
Month-to-month moves are noisy. In Ahrefs' benchmark, ChatGPT traffic rose 14.1% from August to September 2026 and Gemini rose 40.4%, while Google fell 2.7%. 1 One month does not make a trend.
ChatGPT still leads the AI group. It supplied 87.4% of AI referrals in Conductor's 2025 data. 3 In Ahrefs' September 2026 data it had 4.3 million of the 5.3 million AI-assistant total, about four fifths by our arithmetic, with Meta AI second at 577,100. 1
One odd detail: Google alone accounted for 21.6% of ChatGPT's referral traffic in February 2026. Semrush guesses that users go to Google to check what they read, and it did not test that idea. 9
Does your analytics undercount ChatGPT traffic?
Almost certainly, yes. Ahrefs says many AI platforms strip referrer data, so visits can show up as direct traffic. A reader may also see your name in an answer and type it into Google later. 12 Ahrefs' own tests found Copilot, Mistral and Jasper visits registered as direct, and its author called AI traffic likely vastly underestimated. 8
Google's AI features sit in a different bucket. GA4's AI Assistant channel covers visits from ChatGPT, Gemini, Deepseek, Copilot or Grok. It excludes Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, which are counted as Organic Search. 11 So a GA4 chart of AI traffic leaves out Google's own AI answers.
The gap shows up in self-reports. Ahrefs says more than one in five people who sign up for Ahrefs say they found it through ChatGPT or Claude. 12 That is self-reported by one company, and it is a different measure from referral clicks. The gap between the two is why you should ask buyers directly as well as read analytics.
Is the little traffic worth more per visit?
Vendor studies say yes, but the samples are narrow, and one study says no. Every figure below comes from a company that sells search or analytics tools.
- Microsoft Clarity, 1,277 domains, one month: LLM referrals had a 1.66% sign-up rate against 0.15% for search, and a 1.34% subscription rate against 0.55%. 6
- Semrush, over 500 topics: the average AI search visitor was worth 4.4 times a traditional organic visitor, measured by conversion rate. The estimate partly rests on modelled traffic. 13
- Ahrefs: 6% of its AI search visitors sign up for a free account, which it says is four times its organic rate. Free sign-ups are not revenue. 12
- BrightEdge, January to August 2025: AI referrals were not yet translating to conversions. 5
Does it differ by industry or site type?
Yes. Conductor found AI referrals ranged from 2.80% of traffic in IT to 0.25% in communication services, with a 1.08% average across 10 industries. 3 Semrush found 0.48% for US manufacturing sites, and says AI-influenced buying often shows up later as direct or branded search, so that figure may understate influence. 4
Ahrefs found in early 2025 that AI sent about 0.12% of views and 0.17% of visitors across 3,000 sites, with the top sites near 6% and one site at 18%. 8 Averages hide a wide spread. Check your own analytics before you trust any average, including these.
For news publishers the gap is wider. The Reuters Institute reports that Google delivers 500 times as many referrals as ChatGPT from search alone, and 1,300 times as many when Discover is included. 7
How do you measure ChatGPT traffic on your own site?
Use three views and compare them. The first is the AI Assistant channel in GA4. The second is a self-reported question on your enquiry form. The third is the citation reports from the search engines. None is a perfect count, but together they give a range.
- GA4: read the AI Assistant channel next to Organic Search. 11 Our guide shows how to track AI traffic in GA4.
- Self-reported: add a how-did-you-hear-about-us question that lists ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google and Claude, and allow more than one answer. See self-reported attribution.
- Search Console's Search Generative AI performance reports, launched in June 2026 and available to all sites since 31 August 2026, show impressions in Google's AI features. 15
- Bing Webmaster Tools: the AI Performance report, in public preview from 10 February 2026, shows citations in Copilot and Bing summaries. Microsoft says the grounding-query data is a sample. 14
What should you do with a number this small?
Do not judge AI SEO by ChatGPT clicks alone. The click count is the smallest part of the effect. A better scorecard has four lines: how often AI answers name you, how many enquiries say AI was the source, how many of your pages are cited, and how many visits arrive from AI assistants. See AI SEO metrics that matter.
Do not ignore the clicks either. They are growing, they may convert better, and they cost little to track. The calculator below shows what a small number of AI visits is worth at made-up rates, so you can see when the effort pays and when it does not.

How much of my traffic should come from ChatGPT?
Does ChatGPT send more traffic than Perplexity or Gemini?
Is ChatGPT traffic worth more than Google traffic?
Will AI search traffic overtake Google?
One forecast says so for some topics. Semrush projected in July 2025 that AI search could drive more visitors than traditional search for digital marketing and SEO topics by early 2028, sooner if Google makes AI Mode the default. It is an extrapolation, and the same article also gives a window of two to four years. 13
