Reddit vs Your Own Blog for AI Citations: Where Should You Spend Your Time?
Build your own blog first, then use Reddit as a second channel. Brand sites are the main source AI tools fetch for facts about a company, while Reddit helps in advice and comparison threads. Reddit's share of ChatGPT answers fell from about 1 in 5 in March 2026 to about 1 in 43 by late September 1. Do not rely on it alone.
- Reddit's share of US ChatGPT answers fell about 88% between March and late September 2026, so its pull on one engine is unstable.
- Google AI Overviews still cite Reddit heavily: second place at 18.5% mention share in Ahrefs' September 2026 snapshot.
- Brand-owned sites made up 47% of ChatGPT citations and 69% of Gemini citations in Profound's 2026 study.
- Cited Reddit posts are often old, short and low in upvotes, so you do not need a viral post.
Should you invest in Reddit or your own blog for AI citations?
Invest in your own blog first. It is the one place where you control the facts, the wording and the page structure. Ahrefs found that among the roughly 160 most-searched sites in ChatGPT's site: queries, 75.9% were brand sites and Reddit and Facebook together made up 1.9% 1. That shows ChatGPT often goes to a company's own site when it wants facts. It does not show that a blog out-cites Reddit. Our blog-first advice is a judgement from the studies below, not a tested result.
Reddit still matters, but for a different job. It shows up when people ask for opinions, comparisons and advice. Semrush found that Q&A threads made up more than half of Reddit citations, with comparison posts close behind 5.
A blog answers "what is true about us?". Reddit answers "what do real people say?". A decision rule is at the end.
Why do the studies disagree about Reddit?
They count different things. Some count mention share among the top sources, so a big number can describe a small slice of all citations 4. Others count how often a retrieved page is cited, or how many answers contain a link.
They also cover different periods and engines. Ahrefs saw Reddit's share of ChatGPT answers fall across 2026 1, and Semrush's earlier data comes from before that drop 5. A snapshot from one month can be wrong the next.
What does your own blog do that Reddit cannot?
It gives AI tools an official answer to quote. Ahrefs found that 84.4% of factual questions about pricing, product features or company details cited at least one official source, against 68.3% for comparison questions 1. Facts about you belong on your site.
It also meets Google's one hard rule. To appear as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page must be indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet. Google says no extra optimisation or special markup is required 7. A blog page you control can meet that rule on purpose.
Finally, a blog is the only channel where you decide the structure. Lead with the answer, state the price, name the limits. Our guide to writing content AI engines quote covers the layout.
What does Reddit do that a blog cannot?
It supplies third-party voices. A buyer asking for the best tool for a job wants to know what other users think, and AI tools respond by pulling in forum threads. Semrush found that Q&A, comparison and discussion threads together made up nearly three-quarters of cited Reddit content 5.
It rewards modest posts. Semrush found that 80% of cited Reddit posts had fewer than 20 upvotes, the average age was about 900 days, and the median length was about 80 words 5.
Reddit is also among the most cited domains in Google AI Overviews: second to YouTube, with 18.5% of citations among the top 50 sources 3. ChatGPT behaves differently. Once it retrieved a Reddit URL, Ahrefs found it cited just 1.93% of the time, against 88.46% for general search results, though some uncited URLs may never have been opened 2.
How do Reddit and your own blog compare side by side?
Read the table as a division of labour rather than a contest.
| Question | Your own blog | |
|---|---|---|
| Who controls the wording? | The community and the moderators | You |
| Best for which prompts? | Advice, comparisons, "what do people think" | Facts, pricing, definitions, how-to steps |
| Evidence of citation strength | Strong on Google AI Overviews, volatile on ChatGPT 13 | Brand sites 47% to 69% of citations by engine 6 |
| Cost in money | Free | Writing, hosting and editing time |
| Cost in effort | Slow trust-building; posts can be removed | Steady publishing; pages stay yours |
| Speed to first effect | Uncertain; depends on thread age and rules | Uncertain; depends on crawling and indexing |
| Main risk | Rules, bans, disclosure duties, sudden citation drops | Thin pages that nobody cites |
| What you keep long term | Nothing outside the platform | The page, the data and the readers |
What are the risks of each channel?
On Reddit, the first risk is trust. Posting as if you were an unconnected user while working for the company is a disclosure problem. The FTC's rule on fake reviews bars undisclosed insider reviews and fake testimonials, with civil penalties for knowing violators 8. A forum answer is not always a review, but if you recommend your own product, state your connection in plain words, follow each subreddit's rules, and take legal advice if you work in a regulated sector.
The second risk is volatility. Citation share can fall sharply in a few months, as Reddit's did on ChatGPT 1. The third is that a thread you did not write can say something wrong about you, and you cannot edit it.
On the blog, the risk is a page that nobody cites. Being retrieved is not the same as being cited, so each page needs a clear answer and evidence.
How should you split your effort between Reddit and your blog?
Use three rules. Rule one: if your site has no page that clearly answers your top five buyer questions, write those first. Rule two: once those exist, add Reddit for questions where buyers ask for opinions. Rule three: check results monthly by running the same prompts and noting who is cited.
A worked example, with invented numbers. A software firm with 12 posts and no pricing page writes a pricing page and two comparison pages in month one. In month two, two team members answer ten real questions on a relevant subreddit, naming their employer each time. In month three, they run 30 saved prompts and record which sources appear.
Our suggested split, not a tested ratio: about two thirds of effort on the blog and one third on community presence. Shift it if your tracking shows your buyers' prompts cite forums more than brand sites. For forum tactics, see how to get mentioned on Reddit. For the wider mention-versus-link question, see brand mentions vs backlinks, and for video, see YouTube vs blog posts.
- 1. Run the same 10 buyer prompts in ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Mode.
- 2. For each answer, note: is our brand named? Which domains are cited?
- 3. Count answers citing our site, Reddit, YouTube, review sites, others.
- 4. If forums lead on most prompts, add a Reddit task next month.
- 5. If our site is missing on factual prompts, fix the page before posting anywhere.
Frequently asked questions
Does Reddit still get cited by ChatGPT?
Yes, but less than before. Ahrefs found Reddit cited in about 1 in 5 US ChatGPT answers in March 2026 and about 1 in 43 by late September 1. Reddit still ranks first among the most-cited domains in Ahrefs' September 2026 ranking 4. These do not conflict: one counts answers, the other shares of citations among top sources.
Is Reddit more important than a blog for Google AI Overviews?
Do I need a popular Reddit post to be cited?
No. Semrush found that 80% of cited Reddit posts had fewer than 20 upvotes, and the median length was about 80 words 5. Clear, honest answers in the right thread matter more than popularity.
Can a company post on Reddit about its own product?
It can, but be open about the connection. The FTC's rule on fake reviews bars undisclosed insider reviews and fake testimonials 8. A forum answer is not always a review, but if you recommend your own product, say who you are, follow each subreddit's rules, and take legal advice if you work in a regulated sector. Answer the question first and link only when it truly helps.
Which gets cited more, brand sites or Reddit?
Brand-owned sites, across all engines. Profound's 2026 study put brand sites at about 57% of 11.84 billion citations, 47% on ChatGPT and 69% on Gemini 6. Reddit and YouTube were grouped as social, so it does not give a Reddit-only share.
