Sixty Years of Appa: Prakash Hegde

For Appa (Prakash Hegde), from Shruti in Bengaluru, Karthik in Pune and Amma (Sumana), with photos and wishes from 18 relatives through the family link. A fictional family.

  1. Prakash and Sumana seated side by side on a decorated low wooden platform at home, wearing jasmine and rose garlands, smiling at someone off camera.
  2. A restored black-and-white photo from the 1970s of eight-year-old Prakash standing between his parents in front of a tiled-roof house with areca palms behind.
  3. A faded 1980s colour photo of Prakash in his early twenties at a bank counter, smiling, with a ledger open in front of him.
  4. Prakash and Sumana on a sofa at home with their grown-up children Shruti and Karthik and a five-year-old granddaughter on Prakash's lap.

Who it is for
  • Siblings giving one gift together. One book from all of you, with a copy for each sibling's home, and separate pay links so the print cost is easy to split.
  • Grandchildren with the phones but not the old photos. You know how to make it look good. The family link brings in the aunts and uncles who have the wedding album and the 1980s prints.
  • Families planning a retirement dinner. Papa's or Mummy's last day at the bank, school or office: the career story, the postings and the family's thank-you, ready for the dinner. If colleagues are organising, our colleague retirement book is the one for them.
Styles and occasions
  • **Classic album**: ivory pages, serif names and photos in order of the years. Our default, and the easiest for elders to read. An illustrated portrait cover is optional.
  • **Heritage**: deep maroon, gold-look borders and kolam or rangoli motifs, for shashtipoorti, sathabhishekam and golden jubilees.
  • **Silver or golden jubilee**: a silver or gold accent palette tied to the anniversary number.
  • **Tribute magazine**: a family newspaper cover, a contents page, an interview from your answers and a "by the numbers" page, like 25 years, 2 children and 9,125 dinners.
  • **Retro India**: chapter openers in the look of each decade, from the 70s to the 90s, for the year-you-were-born book and fun tones.
  • **Minimal modern**: monochrome, big photos and lots of white space.
Silver jubilee, the 25th anniversary
Often a family dinner or a function in the wedding season. From the old wedding album to today, bought by the children, not the couple.
Golden jubilee, the 50th anniversary
Children and grandchildren across cities and countries, a chapter from each family and the whole family tree. Many families time it with the December and January visits home.
Shashtipoorti and the 60th birthday
In many South Indian and Maharashtrian families the 60th is marked with a ceremony, sometimes with a kalyanam for the couple. Practice varies by family, region and community, and the book follows yours.
Amrut Mahotsav, the 75th birthday
A three-generation celebration, often marked in Maharashtra. Grandchildren's pages, then and now, and a blessing page.
Sathabhishekam and Sahasra Chandra Darshan, around 80
In some families, a ceremony for the elder or the couple at about 80. Customs and timing differ by family and region; your family and your purohit decide the date.
Retirement, often at 58 or 60
Government and bank retirements often fall at the end of the month. A family dinner, a speech and a book about the career.

Questions parents ask

Is it really free?

Making the book and saving the PDF is free. Printing is optional and paid, and we confirm the price and delivery date by email before you pay.

What happens to my photos?

Photo books are laid out on your device and the photos never leave it. For illustrated books, up to three photos are used once to draw the character and then deleted. See privacy.

Most of the best photos are old prints. Will they look good in print?

The camera step straightens each print, cuts the glare and fixes faded colour gently. Faces are never redrawn, so Appa still looks like Appa. If a print is too small or soft to enlarge, we put it in a smaller spot or tell you before you order. You can always switch back to the original.

Will the book follow how our family marks a shashtipoorti or a jubilee?

It follows what you tell us. Names, timings and customs vary by family, region and community, so the ritual pages use your words and only the moments in your photos. We never calculate muhurat, birth stars or auspicious dates; please confirm those with your family and your purohit. For background, read our gentle guides to shashtipoorthi and sathabhishekam.

Will the printed book arrive before the function?

When you start, you type the function date and your pincode, and we show the last day to order each size. If we cannot make your date, we tell you before you pay and suggest the digital book or a faster option. The digital book is ready as soon as you confirm. At launch we print and deliver within India, so family abroad can send a copy to your parents' home.
