How we handle your details and photos

When you make a book

Your book is made on our server, so you can close the page while it works. Here is what is kept, and for how long.

• Your answers and the finished story are stored privately for 24 hours so the book can be made and you can come back to it. After that the book cannot be opened and is deleted.
• Illustrated books:up to three photos are uploaded to private storage and sent to our AI provider (OpenAI) to draw the character. They are deleted as soon as the character is drawn, or if the book fails. The character picture and the book's pictures are kept for the same 24 hours.
• Photo books: your photos are resized and laid out on your own device. They are never uploaded. Only your answers and any notes you type are used to write the captions.
• “Make a different book” deletes the book from our storage straight away. The link to your book is private and cannot be guessed.
• OpenAI handles these requests under its API terms, which include a limited retention period for abuse monitoring. Its API data is not used to train its models by default.
• Your browser also remembers the book for up to 24 hours so you can reopen it. Clearing site data removes that copy.
• We count requests per network address, in memory, to stop abuse. We do not keep those counts.

Children's photos

• You confirm you are the parent or guardian of any child in the photos, or have the right to use them, before each book. We do not store that confirmation.
• We ask for a first name and an age band. We never need a date of birth, surname or school.
• Photos are never used for advertising.

Asking for a print quote

If you ask for a printed copy we collect your name, email, city or pincode and, if you choose, your phone number. We use them only to reply with a price and delivery date. They are stored in our database and copied to the tools our team uses to follow up (our email provider and internal workspace). We do not sell them or share them with advertisers. To have them deleted, email chalk.core@gmail.com.
