How to make open when letters, step by step
Open when letters are a bundle of sealed envelopes, each labelled with a moment such as "open when you miss me" or "open when you can't sleep". To make them, pick 10 to 20 prompts that fit your partner's real life, write a short letter for each, label and number the envelopes, tuck in a few flat keepsakes, and put everything inside one plain outer envelope. Within India a letter can weigh up to 500 grams 1, and international letter post goes up to 2 kg 4, so most bundles can travel as a single letter.
- Choose 10 to 20 prompts from your partner's actual week: work stress, a bad day, a late night, a win.
- Keep each letter short, specific and handwritten if you can. One memory and one thing to do now is enough.
- Small envelopes go inside one plain outer envelope. India Post's minimum envelope size is 140 by 90 mm 1.
- Close the outer envelope fully with glue, not staples or metal clips 1, and write the address with "To" and "From" and the recipient's mobile number 2.
- Going abroad? Send the letters as letter post, keep keepsakes flat and paper only, and never add cash, coins or jewellery 5.

Name the moment, add one real memory, give them something to do now, and sign off your usual way.
- Label and number the envelopes
Write the prompt on the front and a number in the corner.
- Seal and add keepsakes
Seal with a glue stick. Add flat extras like photos, and leave out perfume, glitter, cash, coins and jewellery.
- Order the bundle
Put a "Read me first" note on top and tie the stack with a cotton ribbon.
- Post it in one plain outer envelope
Use an envelope at least 140 by 90 mm, close it fully without staples, and address it with To, From, a mobile number and the PIN code. Abroad, send it as letter post and ask at the counter about customs.
What open when letters are
An open when letter is a note written for a moment that hasn't happened yet. Each envelope carries a label on the front, such as "Open when you've had a bad day", and your partner opens it only when that moment comes. The set works because it meets them later, at the exact time they need you, even if you are in another city or another time zone.
They suit long-distance couples best, but they also work before a long work trip, during exam season, or as a birthday gift that keeps giving through the year. If you are making a set for a friend rather than a partner, this list of open when letters for a best friend has prompts that fit a friendship better.
How many letters, and which prompts
Ten to twenty letters is the comfortable range. Fewer than ten feels thin. More than twenty is hard to write well in one go, and later letters start to repeat earlier ones. If you have only one evening, write twelve.
Think about your partner's actual week before you pick. Gurpreet, a nurse on night shifts in Ludhiana, needed "open when you're coming off a 12-hour shift" far more than "open when it's raining". Mix three kinds of prompts: hard moments, happy moments and everyday ones.
| Prompt | What to write | A small extra to add |
|---|---|---|
| Open when you miss me | A favourite ordinary memory, like the chai stall you always stopped at | A photo of the two of you |
| Open when you've had a bad day | Three things you admire about how they handle pressure | A bookmark you made |
| Open when you can't sleep | A calm, slow letter that tells a small story from your day | A list of songs to play, titles only |
| Open when we've had a fight | What you love about them even when you're upset, and a promise to call | A note that says "Call me. I'm listening." |
| Open when you're proud of yourself | How you felt the first time they achieved something | A blank card for them to write their win |
| Open when it's our anniversary | How you met, in your own words, and one thing you want next year | A ticket stub or bill from your first date |
| Open when you doubt us | Specific reasons you are in this, with real moments | A countdown to your next meeting |
How to write each letter
You do not need to be a writer. A good open when letter is short, specific and sounds like you talking. Aim for half a page to one page. Write by hand if you can, because your handwriting is part of the gift.
Try this four part shape for every letter:
- Name the moment. "If you're reading this, the presentation didn't go the way you wanted."
- Bring in one real memory. "Remember the night before your viva in Pune, when you made me quiz you until 2am and still got everything right?"
- Give them something to do now. "Make a cup of adrak chai, put your phone on silent for ten minutes, then call me."
- Sign off the way you always do. A pet name, a line only you two use, or just your name.
Label, seal and order the envelopes
Write the prompt clearly on the front of each small envelope, and add a number in a corner so the set feels like a collection. Use a different colour pen or a small doodle for the harder letters, such as the one for a fight, so they are easy to find in a hurry.
Seal each inner envelope with a glue stick or a paper sticker. Wax seal style stickers are fine inside a bundle. Avoid sticky tape on photos and staples anywhere near the letters.
Then decide the order. Put a short "Read me first" note on top that explains the rules: one envelope at a time, only when the moment is real, no peeking. Arrange the rest from everyday prompts to the most emotional ones, and keep the anniversary or reunion letter at the bottom. Tie the stack with a cotton ribbon or thread rather than a rubber band, which can harden and mark paper over time.
Keepsakes that travel well
A small extra makes a letter feel like a little parcel of you. Keep extras flat, light and paper based, especially if the bundle is going by post.
- Good choices: printed photos, ticket stubs, a hand drawn map of your first date, a bookmark, and a tea bag or pressed leaf for posting within India.
- Skip these: perfume, which usually contains alcohol and is flammable, glitter, loose seeds, anything wet, and anything alive. India Post does not accept inflammable or dangerous substances or living creatures 3.
- Never send: cash, coins or jewellery in an ordinary letter abroad. The UPU list of prohibited articles that India Post links to bars them from uninsured letter post 5.
Posting them to a long-distance partner
Mini envelopes are usually too small to post on their own. India Post's minimum envelope size for a domestic letter is 140 by 90 mm 1, and international letter post has a similar minimum surface of 90 by 140 mm 4. So put the whole set inside one larger outer envelope. A plain A5 or A4 envelope works well.
Keep the outer envelope plain. Postal staff and family members will see it, and India Post does not carry items with indecent or offensive words or designs on the cover 3. Save the "open when" labels for the inside.
The envelope must be closed on all sides, without staples or metal clips, and flexible enough to bend into a U shape 1. Write the recipient's address in the centre starting with "To", and your address at the lower left starting with "From". India Post's address format includes a mobile number and the PIN code 2. If you add anything beyond paper for a partner abroad, ask at the counter whether a customs form is needed.
| Check | Within India | To another country |
|---|---|---|
| Weight limit for a letter | Up to 500 grams 1 | Up to 2 kg for letter post 4 |
| Smallest envelope | 140 by 90 mm 1 | 90 by 140 mm surface 4 |
| Closing | Fully closed, no staples or metal clips 1 | Fully closed and sturdy |
| Address | To and From, mobile number, PIN code 2 | Use the format of the destination country |
| Tracking | Ask at the counter for a tracked or registered option | Registered letter post offers a free enquiry and limited compensation 4 |
| Extras | Flat extras; nothing flammable or alive 3 | Paper only; nothing the destination country bans 5 |
When you would rather talk than write
Some people freeze in front of a blank page but can talk for ten minutes about why they love someone. If that is you, record a short voice note for each prompt first, then write down what you said.
Chalk Art is building an open when letters book around that idea: you pick your envelopes, say one line or record a voice note for each, and we turn it into a short letter in your words for you to approve. In the digital version each letter stays locked until it is opened.
Questions
How many open when letters should I write?
Ten to twenty is the usual range. Twelve is a good number if you have only one evening. It is better to write ten honest letters than twenty that repeat each other.
Can I post the small envelopes on their own?
Usually not. India Post's minimum envelope size for a domestic letter is 140 by 90 mm , so mini envelopes should go inside one larger outer envelope.
Can I send open when letters to my partner abroad by India Post?
Yes. International letter post goes to 219 destinations and accepts letters up to 2 kg . Keep extras flat and paper only, avoid anything the destination country bans , and choose registered post if you want to be able to enquire about it .
Can I put money or a ring inside one of the letters?
Not in an ordinary letter abroad. The UPU list India Post links to bars coins, bank notes and jewels from uninsured letter post . Give valuables in person or ask at the post office about an insured option.
What if my partner opens them all at once?
It happens. A "Read me first" note with gentle rules helps, and so does keeping one or two letters back to send later or hand over when you meet.
