Last Bench Chronicles: Class XII-B, 2027

For the 40 students of Class XII-B and their class teacher, Sahoo Sir, in Bhubaneswar. Organised by a parent-rep, Rashmi Patnaik. A fictional class.

A farewell book in the slam-book notebook style. Every student has a page with a quote, a favourite memory and where they will be in 10 years. Class polls became award pages, and the back pages are left blank for autographs. School mode was on, so each student's page and photos went in only after a parent approved, and the book uses first names only.

  1. Sriya in a yellow saree and round glasses, sitting sideways on a classroom desk by a window, laughing and holding a steel tiffin box.

Sriya. "Attendance 74%, memories 100%." Favourite memory: the power cut during the pre-boards, when all 40 of us sang until the lights came back. In 10 years: a doctor in Cuttack, still late for everything.

  2. Ritwik doubled over laughing on school corridor steps, Zoya smiling beside him and Sriya hurrying up the steps towards them.

Class awards, voted by all 40 of us. Best laugh: Ritwik. Class problem-solver: Zoya. Always late but always forgiven: Sriya. Most likely to become famous: the whole back bench, together.

  3. The class teacher, Mr. Sahoo, holding marigolds and a handmade card at the front of the classroom while his students clap around him.

For Sahoo Sir. Two years of physics, a hundred times "think first, then write", and not one day you gave up on us. Thank you, from XII-B.

The Last Lab Report: B.Tech Mechanical, Batch of 2027

For the 64 students of B.Tech Mechanical, batch of 2027, in Coimbatore. Made by the student yearbook committee: Nivetha, Harpreet and Faizan. A fictional batch.

A college yearbook in The Daily Batch newspaper style, with chapter openers laid out like front pages. Everyone in the batch is an adult, so they also answered the fun set: canteen order, most-used excuse and hostel nickname. Captions are in English, with a few lines kept in Hinglish because that is how Faizan sent his voice notes.

  1. Faizan telling a story with his hands in the air at a night canteen table, Harpreet and friends laughing over plates of kothu parotta and glasses of tea.

Chapter 3: the night canteen. Kothu parotta at 1 am, three cups of chai per assignment, and Faizan's famous "bas ek aur round".

  2. Nivetha in a navy work overall kneeling beside a half-built go-kart in a college workshop, spanner in hand, smiling up at the camera.

Nivetha R. "I came for the degree and stayed for the people." Favourite memory: rebuilding the go-kart the night before the race. In 10 years: designing engines, and still calling all of you for help.

  3. Harpreet fixing a motorcycle chain at night in a hostel parking lot while Faizan holds a phone torch and Nivetha watches, laughing.

Batch awards. Most likely to fix your bike at 2 am: Harpreet. Best laugh: Faizan. Future CEO: Nivetha. Always late but always forgiven: all 64 of us, for every 9 am class.
